They fine the player, they can void the contract. The league can fine the team for the tune of millions and take away draft picks. The individuals involved in making the deal can get fined and suspended, if its high profile the league might even make an example out of them.
its as you said, only if something is too flagrant they can get caught. If the salaries stay the same but he gets bonuses on the side or appeareances over many years i doubt they can get caught. the league wont check unless something is off or some bitter rival gets intel.
I don't see our milquetoast decision makers breaking bad but you never know.

Its also tax evasion - if you are paying a player and not declaring it then its basically illegal.

They aren't going to risk extremely serious repercussions to the individuals and the team just to sign Cobb. They could probably get away with it but Its not remotely worth the risk.

I must have bad memory. Cobb is SLOW. like 4.7-4.8ish slow. He's lost a lot of explosiveness. Not a fan of the move to be honest.  I guess its all good for Rodgers last year with us.

Tonyan's certainly not fast and he had 586yds / 11TD's last year. There's certainly a size difference....just say'in.

Cobb had what could be considered a bounce back season in Dallas in 2019 - played 15 games (which is good for him) then another quiet year with Houston in 2020 (playing in 10 games only, which seems more the norm.)

I dont see the positional need as urgent and I dont like the contract - but AR wants to flex his muscles a bit and Cobb's a bud - so if we can get him cheap, I dont see a downside.

Will he cut into A. Rodgers snaps and development? Maybe yes / maybe no - depends on MLF to some degree. It'll be interesting if they split snaps and A.Rodgers shows burst and speed that's in Cobb's rear view mirror now - how that would affect Cobb's playing time.

I'll certainly wish him well. I hope we get him cheap.

Real talk, my GF at the time we drafted him was absolutely confident I was in love with him. So then I started making it even worse and making backgrounds to all my devices him and ****.

He's a very striking man. Shoot me.

In short, I'd eat Cobb's salad

Sounds more like you'd toss Cobb's salad!!

I posted this in other thread, but stats-wise, Cobb was pretty-much interchangeable with Lazard last year.  He was quite a bit more receiver-productive than the Malik Taylor/Darrius Shepherd/EQ combo.  No idea how good or willing Cobb is as a blocker, which was obviously a primary responsibility for Taylor, EQ, and Lazard.

  • Both played 10 games
  • Lazard/Cobb 46/48 targets
  • Lazard/Cobb 451/441 yards
  • Lazard/Cobb 33/38 receptions
  • Lazard/Cobb 72%/79% catch percentage
  • Lazard/Cobb 470/369 snaps
  • Malik Taylor + Darrius Shepherd + EQ:  474 snaps, 27 targets/17 catches/229 yards

Analysis paralysis!  You're comparing apples and oranges.  Lazard was also one of the BEST blocking WRs in the NFL.  Cobb is a totally different position/receiver than Lazard.

Far from pretty interchangable.  Falls under 'damn lies and statistics'.

I agree with you .. don't want Cobb back.  The only thing he has going for himself is familiarity with Rodgers.  I was hoping to see Amari Rodgers get thrust into action, but I'm guessing with Cobb around that will be curtailed some.

Yes, you do have bad memory. Cobb certianly isn't running like this now but he ran a 4.46.

Don't you guys have google? Obviously their not running at their combine age/shape especially Cobb, but neither were " Slow" and Tonyan is a heck of an athlete and fast as heck for his size.

NFL DRAFT: Indiana State's Robert Tonyan Jr. - WR or TE? - HERO Sports News

Robert Tonyan Jr., Indiana State, WR, 2017 NFL Draft Scout, NCAA College Football

Quote

His Pro Day top 40-yard dash time (4.58) and broad jump (10 feet, 5 inches) and even his marks in the vertical jump (35 inches) and 20-yard shuttle (4.34 seconds) would have earned him elite status at the NFL Combine — which means basically he’d be a top six tight end in four measurable categories. He did even better at a regional combine earlier — 38-inch vertical, 4.51 seconds in the 40 and a 10’8″ in the broad jump.

One of the unsung benefits of trading for Cobb is the trust Rodgers has in him.  Cobb has clearly lost a step, but  still has enough speed to scheme open.

The part Rodgers wants IMO is Cobb is a cagey vet, when a play breaks down it was more often than not, he found Cobb.  Cobb isn't the fastest WR on the roster, he might be the slowest, but he and Rodgers are on the same page.  Rodgers has reportedly requested the trade,  Cobb may get 2-3 catches a game, but those 2-3 balls could be huge in the overall game management.  Having Cobb out there will only help Rodgers comfort level.  He isn't going to lead the WRs in receiving, but he's a guy Rodgers will look for on the run because he trusts him.

Adams, MVS, Lazard, Cobb, Rodgers, Jones, Dillon, Tonyan, Deguara…

Offense is there.

If the defense is even a moderate improvement and not so soft this year, Rodgers could be the first to break the 13% cap barrier.

Will be very interested to see what his actual cap percentage will be after he reworks his deal.

This ^

Plus there's the rumored / historical fact that AR doesnt throw to rookie WR's (which has always driven me crazy frankly.....) - but if true, A.Rodgers was always gonna be on the tail end of any read progressions.

If Cobb shows up, I'm hopeful both he and AR#8 get to contribute.

No I remember pretty well lol. Last time he suited up for us he lacks a 2nd gear. The other posters confirmed it. My friends commented how slow he was.

He was never a long speed guy either way. but it was his acceleration that got him drafted.

I wonder how LaFleur feels about all this — whether he was involved in the front office’s conversations with Rodgers, or whether this Cobb thing is a huge surprise for him.

I’d expect to see Cobb on the field mostly in passing situations, and probably as a third down specialist who Rodgers trusts to catch the ball.

He averaged 15.1 YPC in 2019 while in Dallas. Dont know / cant say how he did it - speed versus route tree - but he did it.
