Preseason Week 1: Jets vs Giants

Attendance should be pretty good just because it's our first game with fans since 2019. I heard we'll be cutting the roster from 80 guys to 75 shortly after, so let's see who stands out and who doesn't. The o-line appears lacking in both talent and depth, but at least they'll get some reps.

For those who won't see some or all of the game, I'll write short summaries after each quarter.

1st Quarter: Jets win toss and defer. Glennon has 2 incompletions plus a sack, and we go 3 & out with negative yardage. No time to throw. Zach Wilson drives the Jets into the red zone before Yiadom shuts him down. Field goal for NYJ. Let's try again.

Matt Peart pancakes a guy, but Kenny Wiggins lets through a Jet who tips the ball and almost forces a pick. Key receptions by Board and Sills before the drive runs out of steam. Matt Cole gets himself on Joe Judge's radar by downing the ensuing punt inside the ten. Wilson gets another drive going as the quarter ends. 3-0 NYJ.

2nd Quarter: Jets get hung up at midfield. They go for it on 4th & 1 but get stuffed by Shelton and Hill; nice defense. Giants take over in Jets territory. Good blocking by Will Hernandez as Glennon now gets some time to work. Pass to Sills in the endzone would've been six but a Jet grabs him for another flag. Corey Clement then fumbles the ball on the three and the Jets recover.

Wilson and Glennon both call it a night; Mike White and Clayton Thorson take over. Reggie Ragland with a good 3rd down stop (and near-turnover). Two-minute warning. David Sills gets free again and snags a 37-yard pass, but the o-line falters from there and Thorson is sacked. Our D kills the clock to end the half. Still 3-0 Jets.

What is you take on the offensive line play?

Some guys are faring better than others. Thomas hasn't given up a sack. Hernandez has looked good, especially in run blocking. Peart and Wiggins have been hot and cold (more cold than hot).

Overall the line hasn't looked really bad except on one play where Hamilcar Rashed came through untouched for a sack.

3rd Quarter: Jets ball. Ifeadi Odenigbo sets the edge and Carter Coughlin follows up with a tackle for a loss. Madre Harper gets beat and grabs a jersey, giving the Jets a free 1st. Now Coughlin forces a fumble on RB Austin Walter. Walter recovers but that ends the drive. Giants can't do much; NO ONE blocks Hamilcar Rashed and that's an instant sack.

Giants defense gets pounded on a 68-yard drive featuring many runs by #22 Perine, who ends it with a touchdown. Game slows down and the quarter ends. CJ Board has done most of the return work and looks pretty good. 10-0 Jets.

4th Quarter: Jets miss a 50+ yard field goal and give us decent field position. Thorson buys time and overthrows what should've been an easy TD to Damion Willis. Drive stalls; incompletion on 4th & long, turnover on downs. Thorson is brutal. On our next drive, perfect blocking lets Sandro Platzgummer get loose for a huge run. Again the offense sputters out.

Giants force a fumble and recover it deep! Finally our O capitalizes as Thorson throws a 23 yard TD to Willis. XP is good. 10-7. Jets run the ball a lot and drain the clock before we force them to punt. Thorson is sacked in the endzone for a safety, but that's on his nonexistent internal clock more than the offensive line. Jets take a knee and that will end it.

We lose, 12-7. Lots of teachable moments for our coaching staff to point out on Monday morning.

From what I've been seeing on Twitter it seems like Giants OL still looks bad.

Is that why Daniel Jones isn't getting reps? Still think he should be out there if he's healthy.

No, it is because preseason has been cut from 4 to 3 games. Game 1 of this preseason is being treated like game 4 in past seasons, where you want to give people that are on the bubble the chance to perform before you make your first round of cuts. Don't worry DJ will be out there next week against the Browns and every starter will be playing major minutes in the last preseason game against the Patriots.

If DJ goes down I have zero faith in either of the backups. Glennon looked like garbage, Thorson even worse. Dude was throwing darts straight into the turf. Obviously I'm not going to put much stock into the 1st preseason game. With 31 players held out it's not even close to a true representation of our true team. But for the talent that did play... yikes.
