The Final Cuts to 53. Who makes it and who doesn’t

Tuesday is the day that teams must get down to 53.

After cuts comes waivers and then the practice squad on Wednesday

QB

Locks: Wentz and Eason

Bubble: Ehlinger and Hundley

If Wentz isn’t able to go right away Ehlinger could be kept on to backup Eason but he did suffer a knee injury Fri night that Reich is on record as saying doesn’t look good. It’s possible the Colts could cut Hundley and keep Ehlinger to put him on IR and then resign Hundley immediately afterwards.

Cut: Huntley

HB

Locks: Taylor, Hines and Mack

Bubble: Wilkins, LeMay, Jackson

If we’re carrying 4 then Wilkins might be the guy but LeMay and Jackson both have had strong games to make their case for the 53 or practice squad.

Cut: LeMay and Jackson

WR

Locks: Hilton, Pittman, Pascal and Campbell

Most Likely: Strachan and Dulin

Bubble: Harris, Patmon, Black and Vaughns

IR: Nelson and Davis

Strachan has been phenomenal in camp and won’t likely clear waivers, Dulin is a special teams gunner and will likely make it on that. Harris and Patmon both could clear waivers or be traded to a team looking for their skills. Black and Vaughns are likely practice squad or waiver claims

Cut: Harris, Black and Vaughns

TE

Locks: Doyle, Alie-Cox and Granson

Bubble: Green, Thomas and Vollert

IR: Noah Togiai

The only real debate here is if we carry 4 TEs, Green has looked ok but not great so he isn’t likely to make the 53 but could spend another year on PS.

Cut: Green (Thomas and Vollert were waived/injured and could revert to IR)

OL

Locks (starters): Fisher, Nelson, Kelly, Glowinski and Smith

Locks (backups): Davenport, Pinter, Reed

Bubble: Hunt, Holden, Eldrenkamp, Fries O’Donnel

IR: Tevi

Davenport has played the best of the LT options ( @ET80 will be laughing at us for this) Tevi and Holden were turnstiles. Pinter and Tevi are hurt though not sure to what extent.

Traded for Matt Pryor

Cut: Hunt, Holden, Eldrenkamp and O’Donnell

DL:

Locks (starters): Lewis, Buckner, Stewart and Paye

Locks (backups): Muhammed, Turay, Woods, and Banogu

Bubble: Stallworth, Brown, Williams, Kline, Rochell

IR: Windsor

NFI: Odeyingbo

Ballard and Eberflus want “8 starters” so they’re likely to carry 10 or 11 guys on the DL. Guys like Stallworth, Brown and Rochell could be competing for the same spot and Williams would have to beat out former 2nd round picks in order to make the team.
Cut: Brown, Kline (waived/injured)

LB

Locks: Leonard, Okereke, Franklin and Adams

Likely to make it: Glasgow and Speed

Bubble: Jefferson, Bolton, Kaufusi

Leoanrd and Okereke are going to see a majority of the snaps on defense which means most of the remaining guys are going to earn their spot on special teams especially Franklin, Glasgow and Adams but Franklin could be that 3rd guy who checks in in certain spots. We carried 7 LBers at the start of the season last year which could mean the 3 bubble guys are fighting for one spot and that’s if they can play special team

Cut: Jefferson, Bolton and Kaufusi

CB

Locks: Rhodes, Moore, Carrie and Ya-Sin

Likely to make it: Tell and Rodgers

Bubble: Chelsey and Hill

IR: Nelson

I put Ya-Sin on the locks list because the only way he doesn’t make the team is if he gets traded. Andre Chachere is listed as a S but has also been listed as a CB but has had a fantastic preseason and could play a safety/slot role with the team

Cut: Chelsey and Hill

S

Locks: Willis, Blackmon, Odum and Chachere

Bubble: Sh. Davis, Se. Davis and Campbell

The players on the bubble list are dependent on how many safeties we carry

Cut: Se. Davis, Sh. Davis and Campbell

K - Blankenship

P - Sanchez

LS - Rhodes

Does TY's temporary absence allow the Colts to keep an extra RB or WR/TE?

They have to keep him active for the cut down to 53, then they can place him on temporary IR (must stay on for a min. of 3 weeks).

BUT, the 4 players put on the Covid list (Wentz, Pascal, Kelly and Fisher) are inactive so they won’t count against the 53. So that is 4 roster spots we don’t have to account for. Wentz, Kelly and Pascal all are close contacts so they can return to practice by Thursday as long as they are a symptomatic and test negative everyday. That helps because when we put Hilton, Ehlinger and other players on IR after the cut down we can then activate those 3-4

That also means we will probably have to keep Brett Hundley on the final 53 in case there are any setbacks for Wentz

With Tevi on IR, and cutting Will Holden we only have Davenport and Smith at T, with a couple guys who are G/T types (Carter O’Donnel and Will Fries)

Fisher coming back sooner then later?

I think they like Fries.
