Made too much sense. Thought he’d be a main target in FA, glad it worked out in the end.

If he didn’t sign before the big two, I assume he’d have been on our radar. He probably jumped his market, getting excited to play with a star QB.

Maybe now we can stop complaining about not having a guy with 3 career catches now.

Um...trading for Darius in 2017 comes to mind as a good move

The team has been willing to burn draft picks to bring in guys; Hyde, Correa, Dobbs. I‘m more specifically talking about using waivers on a player that is of any consequence; the free upgrade when the team still needs positions addressed.

Caldwell at the beginning was a waiver king

So who of any value did he get off waivers? The “biggest” name I can remember is William Poehls, who is like the most lackluster player imaginable to be the crown signing.

So James O is the only one who ever seemed like they could have upside at any point.

So nothing like either of these two signings, like I was saying.

Okay, don't lie now...

Weren't you one of the big crowd 'round these parts who loved Arthur Brown at one point?  Obviously at the point of claiming him, he'd bungled around for a while doing absolutely nothing, and the shine was off.  But ehhh...

Anyway.  The central point still stands i think.  Caldwell making about a thousand claims early in his run, wasn't so much about "taking shots on quality players from outside the organization who might be better than what we had"...as it was...Dave just Hungry Hungry Hippo'ing all the crappy marbles he'd at one point maybe wanted in a draft once upon a time.  Treating it like extra draft picks, in order to continue to purge the roster of anyone he didn't personally bring in.  Where ultimately, he was just collecting a whole bunch of artisanal trash.

I think some of those are kind of 20/20 hindsight type of deals where it's easy to look back and say they never worked out (some were solid enough options or at least made sense at the time and some did show some upside but just didn't pan out), but I think pwny's main point - or at least the way I'm interpreting it because it matches my perception - is that it's refreshing that there was an obvious waiver wire option out there that fit what we need and want to do and seems to have good upside and we actually put in a claim on that player whereas in the past we've often passed on those types of players for others that maybe didn't fit that mold. How many times in the past have we clamored for a player on waiver wire just to see them go to another team behind us in the waiver order? lots of times.

I think it's also telling that we only made one waiver claim in that initial waiver batch; I think that partially says that we're looking to add guys who fit what we want to do rather than just add guys we don't really know what to do with them which has been one of our biggest issues for a while. For example (though not a waiver wire example): I know it's funny because he's on the team again, but it really was frustrating to watch this team trade a 5th round pick for Carlos Hyde midseason and then just pretty much not use him.
