Motivation - BDL Season kickoff against a young division rival. .

Offensive Strategy

Formations:  3-4 WR Bunch formation (60%)/ 2 RB (25%)/ 2 TE (15%)

Our primary formation heading into the game will contain a single back, three receivers, and a tight end. We’ll have a few plays with 4 wide receivers (both with a single back, as well as with a single TE). CEH and Hunt will see some plays in the same backfield and Donald Parham will come in as a second TE in red zone and short yardage situations.

Scheme:  Pass (55%) vs Run (45%)

Passing - Brady will have a trio of receivers to start the game - veterans Keenan Allen and Tyler Lockett (Welcome Home!)  along with sophomore Darnell Mooney. Security blanket Darren Waller rounds out the pass catchers.

Allen and Mooney will be boundary receivers and Brady will look for a few back shoulder and post routes. Mooney can take the top off of their defense as well for a few deep shots. Lockett out of the slot will focus on crossing routes using his speed to get seperation. Waller should own the seam and intermediate areas.

Brady will look to attack the younger secondary of the Trappers. We like the matchups this week.

Rushing

CEH will get the start but we will use more 2 RB looks with all of the backs. Hunt and CEH will get the majority of the carries this week with Gaskin spelling them. We will use outside zone runs to stretch the Trapper DL out and set up the pass for Brady with some play action. The versatility of our offensive weapons allows them to line up in multiple spots and give Brady a quick out to move the ball.  We are going to remain balanced as usual but want to grind out some time to keep Anchorage off the field. We will also run out of the bunch formation to the weak side.

OW Laviska Shenault Jr. gets a Jet Sweep.sprinkled in to use his ability to break tackles and get tough yards to keep the chains moving.

Defensive Strategy

Formation:  4-2-5 Defense / 4-1-6 dime

Run Defense

Aaron Donald and Fletcher Cox clog the middle and get penetration  to collapse the pocket and not give Burrow time to step up and make throws. Aaron Donald is known to be a monster and game wrecker by himself, since pairing him with Fletcher Cox, a beast in his own right, we have one of if not the best interior tandems in the league. We get back the “Greek Freak” Ioannidis and Sheldon Richardson to keep the boys up front fresh.

Anchorage has been snake bit so far this year with Dobbins going down but has two young buck RB’s in Taylor and Henderson. We have the LBs needed to fill the gaps and limit their ability to get first downs. Deion Jones will be a spy on the RB in both the run game and pass to limit their impact. JOK will get the start and be used as a chess piece to fly around and create chaotic looks for Burrow.

Pass Rush

Danielle Hunter and Markus Golden crash the edges and we will be bringing pressure from our front for most of the game.. This should force Burrow to throw into max coverage and not give his receivers time to develop their routes. The rotation off the bench in Reddick and Hollins will make sure that our guys stay primed all day to keep that pressure on. We are going to run some twist stunts up the middle to confuse the Anchorage OL

When we do blitz it will be up the A or B gap with a LB as both Jones and JOK are also accomplished pass rushers.

Pass Defense

Formation - Cover 3 Zone/Cover 1 Man Hybrid

We will look to limit the big play and use a unique coverage design initially appearing to resemble a single-high man-coverage alignment. But at the snap of the ball, both cornerbacks bail vertically while maintaining tight outside leverage on the wide receivers. With vision set inside on both the quarterback and the receivers, our corners can maintain proper depth, which allows them to play a combination of multiple routes within their zone responsibilities.

From this same pre-snap position, both cornerbacks can easily deploy the top-down man-coverage technique that is designed to look identical to their Cover 3 zone concept. The similar appearance of both man and zone alignments are designed to confuse Burrow into making errant passes.

Kyle Fuller, Jaycee Horn and John Johnson will be responsible for the deep-third zones with Johnson having the deep middle. Underneath, Jonathan Jones will cover the slot and Jordan Poyer will play in a robber role to undercut routes and contain big runs from Taylor and Henderson.

As stated, Deion Jones will be a Spy on the RB for routes in the flat and screens. Adrian Phillips is our Dime S this week and will cover Pitts if the Trappers go 2TE/4 WR.

 Coverage Assignments:

·         DeVonta Smith / Kyle Fuller - CB

·         Marvin Jones / Jaycee Horn - CB

Tyler Boyd  / Jonathan Jones - CB

·         Jonathan Taylor / Deion Jones - LB

Tyler Higbee / Jordan Poyer S

Kyle Pitts / Adrian Phillips S

Overview: It’s our first game back home in Anchorage as fans are excited to get back to full swing as we take on our division rival Singapore.

Offensive Attack: RPO, Zone Run, Combo Routes, Rub Routes, Play Action

Play Distribution: 50/50 Pass/Run

Formations: 3 Wide (50%), 2 TE (30%) 4 Wide (10%), 3 Wide Bunch (10%)

Back Snap Percentages: Taylor (65%) Henderson (25%), Mack (10%)

WR in 2 TE Set: Ruggs (100%), Chase (50%), Smith (50%)

Philosophy: Control the clock and keep Brady off the field. Quick high percentage passes such as slants combined with deep shots to spread out the defense and give Burrow an opportunity to pick apart favorable matchups. Ball control zone rushing attack with a heavy work load for Jonathan Taylor.

Passing Game:

We will run a variety of routes to keep a very good defense guessing. We will utilize rub routes in our bunch formation and 2 TE sets to free our receivers off the line quickly. Chase will line up as our X receiver and will get some slants and screen looks to get him going early and Ruggs will be our Z lined up on TE side in 3 wide off the ball giving him more wiggle room to get free off the line to counter any press and stretch the field for us. DeVonta will run in the slot in 3 wide and we will utilize his quickness and route running to feast in the middle of the field while also getting him some deep shots in 2 wide sets. In 4 wide sets Tyler Boyd and Kyle Pitts will play in the slot and DeVonta Smith will move outside to X and Chase will come out of the game. We are going to run a heavy RPO attack this week to take advantage of that aggressive defensive line of Singapore. We will heavily feature Kyle Pitts and look to get him up the seam often. He will also be a prominent red zone target for us. We will mix in some play action feeding off of our running game. We will double Aaron Donald on the inside with a Guard and Center and use Taylor heavily in pass protection, primarily focus on protecting against A and B gap pressure. In two tight sets we will always have Higbee chip the end to his side before his release on passing plays.

Running Game:

Taylor will be our bell cow with Darrell Henderson and Marlon Mack spelling him. We are going to double Donald in the run game also so that our RPO’s will blend in with the same looks as our pass pro and zone run reads as well as give us the support where we will need as we all know Donald is just a pure monster. We will run a good amount of zone stretch allowing the backs to have cut back options to counter the over pursuit or the ability to plant and go. We will work our TE’s to cut off and seal the edge to give us outside running lanes. If the ends are widening out we will use the TE to drive outside and gash inside of the ends while clogging up the interior with our G’s and C’s and work the play side T to assist the TE then get to the second level if the end is ridden out. We will run a heavy amount at both ends. Hunter hasn’t played in a while and we believe we can outmatch Markus Golden or whoever plays the other end. We know most of our running success will come in the C gaps and outside with some success also opening up inside as we use the aggressiveness of this front against itself. As the defense widens out it will open the middle of the field for our passing game as well.

Defense: 3-4-4 against 2 RB, 2 TE Sets 2-4-5 against 3 Wide and 4 Wide.

3-4-4 DLine Rotation: Dexter Lawrence (80% LE), Vita Vea (70% NT), Williams (80% RE)  Fatukasi (20% LE), Hankins (30% NT), Oliver (20% RE)

2-4-5 Dline Rotation: Vea (70% NT) Lawrence (40% UT, 10% NT) Williams (50% UT), Fatukasi (10% UT), Hankins (20% NT)

Philosophy: Get after Brady and disrupt his pocket. Play disciplined and stout against the run and funnel everything back inside to our bigs. Protect the center field with our stud FS and limit their deep shots and chunk plays. Fly to the ball and use sound technique. Keep a fresh rotation on our dline as that is where we will control this game on defense.

Run Defense:

We will look to funnel run plays inside to our strength by pinching down on the outside. In 2-4-5 formations we will utilize Budda Baker in the box as a cover backer role next to our ILB. He is free of gap responsibility and able to run and chase plays all over the field. We will have our interior dline two gap and our stand up ends be responsible for the C gaps. Patrick Surtain will be playing a Star role similar to a Strong Safety but also down into the box matched up on the TE. He is responsible for D gap in the 2-4-5. The nickel corner has the opposite D gap while the ILB Murray has clean up inside and can track and chase. His assignment is eyes first on the A and B gaps as extra insurance since we are using two players to cover those four gaps and then flow to the ball. We will utilize Bradley Chubb and Romeo Okwara as our stand up ends. If Chubb doesn’t play, Hubbard starts in his place and Ojulari becomes the third edge who gives the starters breathers. Against the 2RB and 2 TE formations we will be running our 3-4-4. Against a 2RB 1 TE set we will utilize our NT to two gap both A gaps. Our ILB will have B gap to the TE side, our end on the TE side with have C gap and our stand up edge will have D gap. On the weak side the other ILB will have B gap the end will have C gap. Budda Baker will play SS in this formation down in the box and Surtain will be off the field as we use both Kenneth Murray and Cole Holcomb as the ILB. In both formations our corners will play disciplined run defense and Jessie Bates is our last line of defense at FS.

Pass Defense and Pass Rush:

We will be playing a heavy man scheme this week against 3 wide sets while sprinkling in some cover 3 and cover 2. In our 2-4-5 when in man our outside corners are in man on their outside receivers. We will play matchup specific football this game. Donte Jackson is assigned to Mooney where his speed matches up well. Darious Williams is assigned to Tyler Lockett whether in the slot or out wide and Jaylon Johnson is assigned to Keenan Allen. If these are not the three receivers they have out there then the corner who doesn’t have their matchup out there takes next man up. Patrick Surtain has Waller. Jessie Bates is deep middle favoring their two wide side. If there is a four wide Surtain takes the fourth receiver. If they go empty we run cover 3 or cover 2 zone. In man if 3 wide 1 TE 1 RB Budda’s main responsibility is the RB out of the backfield and Murray has help on Waller or blitz. We will send Murray in the 2-4-5 40% of the pass plays in that set on a blitz in the interior to get more pressure in Brady’s face, and he is doubling Waller with Surtain 50% of the pass plays in this set. We will send Budda on a blitz and have the Murray cover the RB the remaining 10% of pass plays out of this set. We are always sending our ends in the 2-4-5 to create a four man rush with the interior rushers and 50% will be a five man rush with that extra blitzer. In the 3-4-4 against the 2RB or 2TE sets we will play majority zone, bringing both ends and our 3 interior dlineman on 90% of pass plays in this set. The other 10% one of the ends will drop into coverage in the flats underneath any crossing routes to play a robber role.

We look forward to competing with a very good division rival and may the best team win!

Secondary

Rookie Jaycee Horn was targeted three times and only gave up one catch for 10 yards. Donte Jackson was the only player in the secondary to allow multiple catches, as he gave up four for 58 yards on six targets.

Hmm They scared of throwing Horn's way.

That catch he did give up was a TD though let’s not leave that out of the picture... he had good coverage on it at least. We are not scared of Horn.

I voted Singapore. Anchorage looks like it's in the middle of a youth movement but I'm not sure I trust Burrow and his young receivers to beat Brady with that kind of supporting cast at all.  Really like the look of Singapore's defense as well.

Anchorage looks like a team that is going to be potentially very good next season.
