Shady Slim Does America (+Japan)

so as i mentioned before, gents, i went on the game show The Chase Australia. now that my episode's aired i can say i won $14K. admittedly this is about twenty bucks in real money given how the exchange rate is but nevertheless it's enough for me to do my trip to japan and the usa after i graduate, that being, the december of 2022 there and there abouts.

some things on my agenda are certain such as a steelers and penguins game in the burgh. but others are not certain! i'm looking to have time in the northeast, train down from the northeast through the southeast to texas and stop along the way at wherever's worthwhile (i don't just want to fly over half the country and stop in three cities; i think that's a waste), and from there head west and come back to sydney from los angeles. obviously this isn't yet a rigid plan, it depends on when my final exams are and when the steelers and penguins home games are ultimately scheduled.

so

beyond those, the steelers and penguins games, there is a big country ahead of me with lots to see and lots to do. need y'all to give me the best advice as to this if possible! the places to go, the places to stay (cheaper better!), the things to see, the food to eat and everything else that i can't miss

Like just a broad stroke what cool things would be most interesting? America has alot to do.

excellent avatar and title by the way

i suppose what i'm hoping to do is to properly see and experience the places that i go - like i don't want to just go to new york and see the statute of liberty and times square, then see the grand canyon then see the brooklyn bridge. those sorts of big tourist attractions are nice, but they're just that, tourist attractions - and i don't want to go across the globe just to see the same stuff that all the other dumb aussie tourists come to see! i'd like to see, experience, do, the places and things that you don't go to or see or experience on an organised tour, the sorts of places you'd only know or know of if told about! you get what i mean?

Ive not been to Pennsylvania, so no help there. But if you stay NE make sure to explore NYC. I like the Comedy Cellar, I always hit that up. The East coast has a lot of beautiful spots all the way down to FL. Then start your trek west. Do it in the Southern US as to avoid ishy places like Ohio and Detriot. I dont want you getting stabbed. Plus if you venture across the south you can visit the Alabama campus, Nola, HOU, venture north up to Austin, keep doing west through NM/AZ/CO until you hit Vegas.

Boom, our trip is all planned. Do we start here or in Japan?

Since it will be December (Winter), are you wanting to do much outdoors?

Are you renting a car to go across country?

Think he's riding rails, but I would also suggest MegaBus and buses like that if you don't mind how you're going around. Not comfy but cheap

yeah want to do a bit outdoors given i'm an outdoorsy guy and the cold is no enemy to me but obviously i'm not going to be going to beaches in the northwest to swim hehe; i'm not a polar bear

i like the way you think here... i like it a lot!! expecting to do japan first, then NE, then do the buttonhook down and around but again it all depends on the timing of the PIT games

True. I think its hard to just rent a car and ride around the country alone though.

He should rent an RV. Haha

Yeah if he is doing it alone that makes it tougher

i might well be going with some mates - definitely with a mate to japan, and if there's a new mrs shady by that point (though unlikely given we're in the grips of an extended lockdown) that is an option too - so, yeah, the state of play re a supporting cast is somewhat uncertain. like i said definitely have a mate booked for japan but the us is a maybe; think that a car would be a bit expensive regardless and i don't trust myself (though i'm a good driver) or any of my mates to drive on the wrong side of the road like your lot do

Visit small town cafes. Just get their specials…. Small town as in smaller than 800 people. This is how you taste American.

this is a very good idea too, very keen to do this. i'm hoping to do a lot of this sort of thing especially in between the major stops

if  you come by the philly area i'll treat you to an actual philly cheeseteak. nothing else like it in the world and the one boon for living near this city.

i have no idea how the rest of the world continues to **** up one of the simplest and most delicious sandwiches ever conceived but i can guarantee you, you haven't had a cheese-steak if you haven't had it in the philly area. and i offer you my local knowledge as to whose cheesesteaks are actually best.
