Tugboat
I have so many questions and answers. I hope you do not catch me. 1)Ya'll got to be on The Chase, and you won money on it? Your team didn't suck? I wish Canada had a Chase. I could do that probably maybe. 2)I knew i liked you for a reason. 3)If you like outdoors stuff and aren't turned off by a bit of a chill, you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't hit up the Continental Divide. Basically, go do some outdoorsing in like Idaho or Montana. There are some soooooooooo many places that are just truly staggeringly beautiful to hike there. Or go to Canada and hike the same sort of places. Let's just say the Kootenays are the most beautiful place on earth, and leave it at that. 4)There's no Canadian city worth a "world tour". So just fly into Calgary or Vancouver and go from there. The best part of the best Canadian cities...is how close they are to magical non-cities. While I'm always one to recommend a trip to Houston, I'll skip on that to recommend New Orleans - everyone thinks Bourbon Street (and that's a solid selection) there's so much more to be had in the Garden District and the French Quarter. Right now might be a bad time to go as the city is still reeling from Ida - but they've dealt with worse over there and bounce back. My suggestion would be to go to Drago's for chargrilled oysters and alligator tacos, then head over to Harrah's Casino to try your hand at craps or poker. While in New Orleans, make sure you go to Willie Mae's Scotch House - it is THE BEST fried chicken you will find on this planet. Thank me later. More suggestions coming soon.

And it's even better if you're just visiting. Not to mention you'd have me as a tour guide so it'd be a great time. As always with traveling, you need to know where to go and where to avoid. Downtown, for one, is a dump. Portland is a weird city that has a ton to offer. Some of the best beer in the US. A big time foodie city. Genuinely nice (and strange) people. Most importantly though, what makes Portland great is what it's surrounded by. Oregon is one of the most beautiful states in the US. Seattle is good too and you have the same nature perks that Portland/Oregon offer. I find Portland far more unique though, both in the good and bad. It all depends on the type of traveler you are tbh. Seattle has a lot more touristy things to offer like the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, the first Starbucks, and all that jazz. That doesn't do it for me personally. But I'm not saying that's all Seattle is by any means. It has cool trendy areas as well and will give you the same excellent food. Nowadays you can find good beer in any city and Seattle is no different. The Ballard area in Seattle has a bunch of good breweries. I'd recommend both, but again it depends on what you like to do. And also you need to consider they're both deep northwest and since your time is unlimited, you're going to have to make some though cuts. The US is huge and unfortunately our train system blows compared to Europe. If you're coming to the NW, you'd likely need to fly if you don't have a car. And if you don't have a car, you're really not playing to Portland and Seattle's strengths (access to nature).
swoosh
If you end up visiting any of these cities, I have a ton of recommendations for you. Mostly restaurants and bars/breweries. I typically create a Google My Maps for every place I travel, so it's easy to reference and make recommendations. Portland (obviously) Seattle San Francisco LA (ew though) San Diego Austin Chicago New York New Orleans Nashville

If you're going to do Texas, I'd rank the stops as follows: - Austin, TX (just a great city from top to bottom - you head out to the lakes for the day and hit up the bar scene at night, where the local music scene is perhaps the greatest in the world). - San Antonio, TX (not sure if you have ethical concerns, but Sea World is a nice stop... and you will find the best Mexican/Tex Mex outside of Mexico here. You can find legit cowboy boots here, and you could add in an authentic Lucha Libre mask as well!) - Houston, TX (I love home, and there is quite a museum district to get lost in. NASA/Space Center Houston is a great visit and the food here is second to only a few cities - New Orleans, New York City and Las Vegas, if you asked me). - Dallas, TX (Trash city, don't bother). If you come during football season, you'd be doing a disservice by not going to a Texas or Texas A&M game - Darrell K Royal stadium and Kyle Field are two different experiences entirely vs your typical Sunday NFL experience.
Shady Slim
@swooshif i can get up that way i'm definitely keen - as you say, it's going to be an actuarial exercise to figure out what i'm gonna do - part of that's why i've started the thread so much out from the trip, so i can work out the logistics of it all. definitely some of those cities you've listed are places i'd like to see though @ET80, thanks much for the breakdown - will try to hit at least two of the stops there and maybe more; going to a CFB game is a thing that i stupidly hadn't considered yet, in spite of watching it myself anyway - wonder if i could be lucky enough to have the red river showdown or something coincide with while i'm there, so i can horns down and get set on by a heap of angry texans...
