If you’re anything like me, the heart of your roster remains relatively fixed beyond injury and the occasional trade. But I almost always keep one roster spot as a ever-circulating stash spot. So I thought I’d create a thread where we can discuss those forward-thinking options rather than the reactive nature of the waiver wire (example; I picked up Alex Collins just before kickoff last week which paid off immediately). For the most part, these are RBs, because the ROI on stashing a handcuff at this stage is seemingly more impactful than any QB, WR, or TE that may pop week to week. There’s obviously exceptions to that rule. That said, what do people think about some high upside stash players heading into Week 5? I’ve got a few I’ve got my eye on (reply post to follow). I’ll try to update this weekly with my thoughts and would love feedback from others. Note: I’m only in 12-team leagues, so a end of bench stash for me probably isn’t someone to consider in 10-teamers and someone who should be owned in 14-teamers. SaveOurSonics Posted October 7, 2021 Author Share Posted October 7, 2021 Khalil Herbert With Montgomery out for the foreseeable future and only Damien Williams ahead of him, Herbert is looking like an excellent stash. He’s only owned in ~4% of ESPN leagues, so he’s likely sitting out there looking for a home. Williams is definitely the better receiving back, but Herbert is a hand picked draft choice of this regime and brings much more practical skills for an early down thumper role. People are spending on Damien as if he’s earned a bellcow role, but I’d be very surprised if that were the case. The Bears also traded for kick returner Jakeem Grant. Why? Well Herbert has been their KR specialist, so it’s fair to assume they are looking to utilize him more as a dedicated RB. Chris Evans Need someone to avenge your team? Evans is a very interesting option as someone picked by this regime and with solid athleticism. He’s more of a pass catching specialist, so think Gio Bernard, but he has underrated size to carve out a bigger role if Perine is ineffective on early downs. Mixon is facing an ankle sprain of unknown severity, so the only question with Evans is how long you might squeeze value out of him. Brandon Bolden / Rhamondre Stevenson I find myself going back and forth on which Pats back is more likely to deliver value ROS. On one hand, Bolden appears to have claimed the James White receiving role which could be quietly very valuable in PPR leagues. The issue is he’s historically a special teamer, is more of a JAG, and has young talented backs behind him. Does he hold this role ROS? That brings us to Rhamondre. He looked incredibly talented in the preseason, but a thumb injury and week 1 fumble has effectively taken him out of the Patriots 2021 plans. That said, he’s a Damien Harris injury away from presumably being forced into a bigger role, and Harris isn’t exactly known for making it through a full season unscathed. Problem here is that there are no guarantees of that being the case. BB is known for redshirting rookies. Jeff Wilson Jr. This one is fairly obvious. If you have an IR spot, he’s probably already owned. Even if you don’t, stashing a guy who could lead an effective run game is appealing. Anyone else you guys are eyeing? I picked up Collins in both of my leagues. Carson's not playing tonight with a neck injury so I'm hoping that he plays well and I can trade him. I personally like going with guys who are behind guys who I have little faith in. The strategy worked for Edelman when I had no faith Amendola would stay healthy. I like this one as well for the WR position. People are assuming Toney can’t sustain the volume needed to be a viable flex play, and while that may be true now, he’s a single injury away from any one of Golladay, Shepard, Engram, and/or Ross from being a serious weekly contributor. Aside from Golladay, he’s the only hand picked receiver from this regime and should get his chances to establish himself as a future offensive staple. I added him to the end of my bench as well, though I am admittedly considering dropping him for someone like Evans, Stevenson, or even Brandon Bolden just because my RB group is weak and I need to hit on someone there. No one should have extreme faith in Damien Williams handling a 3 down role over the next 5ish weeks and Herbert is the more traditional between the tackles option. I’m not a huge Damien Harris believer either (mostly due to the brand of his game and propensity for nagging injuries) which is why Rhamondre is so enticing. That said, with the way BB treats rookie RBs, I’m beginning to wonder if everyone is sleeping on the ROS value of Brandon Bolden. It also seems unlikely that Rhamondre gets meaningful work unless Harris goes down. I’ve also heard people mention guys like Jaret Patterson, Kylin Hill, and Jermar Jefferson, but all three of those are almost entirely dependent on injuries in front of them. At the risk of cutting my own wrists in the dynasty league I play in...I'm going with Kylin Hill. Dude's a stud and was incredibly underrated in college. I had him as one of my better RB prospects. The situation indeed sucks, and there is very little chance that he will get the opportunity to shine within the next two years unless there is a bigtime injury to one of the guys ahead of him. I personally like the Damien's a little. They are world beaters but I'd take them over a flier on a relatively unknown guy. I'm going Williams over Herbert. Tony Jones Jr is a decent handcuff option behind Kamara in deeper leagues. Brandon Bolden looks like a potential option in PPR leagues as the Patriots 3rd down back. I just think the odds of him stepping in mid season and providing enough production to be fantasy relevant is really unlikely. I think he’ll be more of a nice situational deep threat guy, very similar to how he was deployed in Seattle. Lance has top 5 QB upside for fantasy. With his combo of running + Shanahan + elite YAC weapons, he has a elite floor and ceiling (similar to Hurts, but better). Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
SaveOurSonics Posted October 8, 2021 Author Share Posted October 8, 2021 Big waves with this update that Antonio Gibson is battling a fractured shin. Potentially long term here, which vaults Jaret Patterson to the forefront of my stash list. I doubt he’d ever receive more than 50% of the workload, but that’s sadly enough to make him flex worthy at the RB position. Despite what feels like a stigma to the contrary, this Washington offense produces fantasy relevant guys under Turner. I’m honestly not sure who I now prefer between Herbert & Patterson. On one hand, we KNOW Montgomery is out, which lowers the barrier to entry for Herbert. On the other hand, Patterson plays on the better offense and would arguably be thrust into a heavier workload than Herbert considering his potential role as the early down runner.
