So what? As you say, it was going to be a turnover on downs, anyway. Odds are, if a defender does pick it off, the other team is actually going to lose field position.

How do you figure that? He threw it short out of bounds. It was a penalty on the Lions. They were turning it over either way. He prevented a bigger play from possibly happening.

No, more like prevented any chance his team had of punting the ball.
