What TV Show Are You Watching?

'Kenny vs Spenny' has to be one the most unique shows in television history. A fact I'm reminded of every rewatch.

The premise is pretty simple, it's essentially a documentary style show where two childhood best friends with near opposite personalities live in a house and challenge each other in a new competition each episode.

What it turns into though, is just incredible...

I mean you go from Season 1 competitions like 'Who do children like more?' and 'Who is the best figure skater?', to later seasons' comps like "Who can 69 the longest?', "Who can get further with other guy's Mom?", "Who can make a better Porno?", and "Who can handle more torture?".

Spenny's life and mental state seems to deteriorate as the series progresses and Kenny is all about making that collapse as entertaining as humanely possible. What they get away with airing is just absurd, especially when compared to today's cultural standards. Racist comedy. Sexism. Pedophilia, Homophobic, and Beastiality humor. Violence, Sex/Nudity, and Drug use. Mocking physically and developmentally disabled people, old people, religion, really everything you can think of lol.

Even the show's path to television was bizarre. MTV bought the pilot then rejected it, USA paid for a pilot then shut it down during production, it finally aired on Canada's CBC Television. They ordered and aired a 26 episode 1st Season only to cancel the show after it finished. Then an entertainment world miracle which almost never happens occurs, another network(Canada's Showcase) picks up the canceled show. This resurrected the series and many fans consider it the show's true start as this is when the format and material evolves into what it would be like for the rest of the series. Showcase seemingly resolved to let Kenny Hotz dream up anything he wanted for the show with little to no objections and what you got is the creative comedic cesspool that is seasons 2-6. Matt Stone and Trey Parker of South Park fame joined the series as producers for the 4th season and IIRC helped get certain episodes to air on comedy central. I think Kenny joined the South Park team for a while too.

The show apparently ended when Spenny decided enough was enough, and they stopped at 6 seasons. The series has a massive cult following and many remakes copying the format popped up in other countries and languages. UK- Ed vs Spencer, Colombia- Juan vs Roman, Germany- Elton vs Simon, etc etc. With Spenny willing to do the show again, they've attempted to revive it and have solicited every avenue...to no avail. Which comes as no big shock considering the content.

If anyone is interested, Kenny Hotz's youtube channel has all the episodes up free and uncensored. With the exception of the Season 6 "Who do Black Guys Like More?" episode which was set to private in 2020 amidst the BLM stuff. It's easy enough to find elsewhere though. Here you go(NSFW)-

Honestly, in terms of television. I don't think there's a show that's ever come close to making me laugh the same way KvS did/does. You really do get those laughs where you feel like you can't breathe.

I'll be watching some Kenny vs Spenny after work today. The Pilot isn't even near as funny as the show is and the pilot still has me rolling.

The top comment on the video said that trainer got fired from his gym after the episode aired. Not surprised, he came off looking like a head case.

if they didn't stage ****, it'd be a lot better.

Are you talking about Kenny's cheating, like you'd prefer it if he didn't deceive Spenny and the audience at times. And wish it was just a straightforward honest competition. Or do you think aspects of the show are totally faked or something?

yeah it's staged reality like all the other 00's MTV shows. don't think of any of the comps are actually comps. that wasn't me hating on it lol, i still like it.

Yea, I didn't think you were hating on it or anything. For me the show is as real as it could be and I'm fine with that. Them competing was real, the interactions they had with guests and the judges were real, and most importantly the abuse they took was real. That's all I care about. So past that I don't care about them creating scenes or dubbing in audio here and there to fill in the 'natural/organic' story and build the strongest most entertaining narrative. If they didn't do stuff like that you likely wouldn't have a show.
