Even if the second season is still the ugly stepchild. Now this is how you write a strong female protagonist. I also loved that there were good themes without it being so on the nose about those themes. The weaknesses are still there especially the early romantic triangles. But to the creators’ credit, they managed to turn those weaknesses around in the third and fourth season. The Chinese Exclusion act was actually passed by government once the Tong Wars escalated to bloody conflict. Characters such as Ah Toy and Dylan Leary are based on people in history (not sure if their actions line up with history, but... We're not aiming for a completely realistic retelling). The cast is amazing - Andrew Koji is incredible as the Ah Sahm, the protagonist. He embodies Bruce Lee in an uncanny way; his mannerisms, bravado and technique are signature Bruce Lee, it's like watching Lee at the top of his game... ...which brings me to the fight choreography. Holy hell, this is the best fight choreography I've ever seen on a TV show, something you would expect from a big budget Marvel movie. Even the non-Kung Fu fights come off as incredibly authentic and violent, it's visually stunning. It's a shame they only got two seasons done before the pandemic and Cinemax stopping all original content; This show was really hitting some high notes going into S3, I'm hoping that the move to HBO Max will give this show a rebirth as a streaming-only item on HBO Max. Warrior and The Flight Attendant would give HBO Max a 1-2 punch that compares with any sort of Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime/Disney+ exclusive. TL;DR - If you have HBO Max and you're not watching Warrior, you're wasting money. If you loved Warrior, and you haven't seen this yet, tune in to the other Cinemax hidden gem - Banshee. Though I thought Azula was pretty good also. With Korra, Zaheer was obviously the best of the series. But I also really appreciated Kuvira and Amon too upon rewatching the series. With Amon, that ending..... Only Unalaq and Vaatu fell short of the others and came closer to the one dimensional stereotypical cartoons for kids. Ty21 Posted February 27, 2021 Share Posted February 27, 2021 (edited) Restarted black mirror. I’m gonna post my ranking of each ep as I go so buckle up. 1. Playtest - I really like Wyatt Russell’s acting, feel like I haven’t seen him in anything in a long while. It was a tough episode to watch, watching his mental decline and all of the episode’s events not truly transpiring as his upload failed in a fraction of a second. I have this episode as my top because it appealed to me and my interests the most probably. Each layer of the episode was just harder than the last. This psychological thriller would’ve made a good movie. I think it speaks volumes on it that I liked it this much since now I have to go through this whole list and rewrite all the freaking numbers 2. USS Callister - I genuinely like everything Jesse Plemons is in, so I wonder if his participation in this ep made me like it more than I otherwise would’ve but the episode had a fun, tremendous amount of depth. Plemons character didn’t know how to talk to people so he creates this universe only he has control of and then gets thwarted being an a-hole to people that comprehend how to undo his codes and showed his overconfidence by leaving his only way out of the game vulnerable. Guessing he just ends up dying since he can’t leave the game and he set the do not disturb thing on his door so no one will find him til he’s already dead. On second thought, I’d probably put this ep around 7 in ranking but I’m not going to change it around and have to renumber everything on the list lol. I liked the galaxy quest feel to the episode which is probably why I’m putting it so high 3. White Christmas - kinda annoying that I liked this one so much cause now I have to rewrite the number of the rest of the episodes on this list. Jon Hamm had a cool backdrop that set the tone for the rest of the episode and the final conclusion. He did a good job baiting him in the best way he knew how to get what he wanted and the punishment for him and the criminal were absolutely brutal 4. Men Against Fire - the ideas and concepts in each episode of this show are incredible and leagues ahead of any other show I’ve ever seen tbh. This episode was like Starship Troopers meets nazi Germany meets zombies in some regards. The government taking advantage of soldiers to get perfect killing machines incapable of feeling remorse since their targets are altered to appear infected and resetting anyone who comes aware of it is such a jolting idea. 5. Hang the DJ - this episode wasn’t complex really at all, but it’s unsurprisingly one of my favs. Idk why but I’m a sucker for off the wall chick flicks like this lol. Might’ve jacked my score up a little bit too that these episodes are largely sadistic in their conclusion and this one was kinda the opposite. I was pulling for both characters, in more ways than one. 6. White Bear - damn. Halfway through I was thinking it’d be about middle of the pack on my list but the conclusion crushed it. Kinda neat look on how punishment could be enforced in an inhumane society 7. Black Museum - I got a lot of enjoyment out of this ep. it has the flashback aspect White Christmas did, which I enjoyed. I didn’t really think of this guy as a criminal (I’m inebriated) for the pain doctor thing or the coma patient implant thing (both were okay ideas that just derailed I think) but the eternal torture and damnation of the guy that might’ve been innocent taught he deserved the end punishment. I have limited memories of this show but I remember not liking it after the Bryce Dallas Howard ep and I felt this episode was fun. I wish there was an extended episode to show the entirety of the Black Museum because this black mirror world is fascinating. 8. Be Right Back - tugs on the old heartstrings. Compelling look at loss and how nothing can really replace what was lost 9. San Junipero - aka Sexy Lesbians in Paradise. This episode was cute and it made me wish this was a possible end of life choice we could make. Also wish there was a 1980’s themed Westworld amusement park irl because I do feel nostalgic for a time I wasn’t even around for. The widower character nailed it at the end, I fully believed her character had lived 49 years and had experienced that life when she went on that monologue. 10. Rachel, Jack, and Ashley too - wasn’t a bad episode. I like how each episode tackles a random issue and this was family managers manipulating their celebrity family talent for their own gain. I went to school with a couple girls that fangirled over Miley Cyrus like the girl in this episode and they were super annoying. One ended up getting cancer. Probably no correlation to being a Miley Cyrus fan tho. 11. Hated in the Nation - it was pretty long, but def a middle of the pack ep. It felt like a modern/future tech spin on The Birds and a fun attack on cancel culture, since cancel culture is one of the most annoying parts of the last decade 12. 15 million merits - not bad, left me wondering what could’ve happened to create this dystopia 13. Smithereens - it was okay, highlights social media addiction and creating an awareness of it everywhere by doing something extreme to show the evils of it. Idk if I missed the reveal of why the woman’s daughter killed herself outside of the minor password hint that it wasn’t the woman’s fault it happened. 14. Striking Vipers - ha gayyyyyyy 15. Crocodile - I didn’t know where to post this cause I didn’t have much love for it. It seems like killing off everyone that could incriminate you in a crime is a pretty bad idea, but an even worse idea in this future where everything is so easy to track and replay. It seemed like a bizarre move to do all that and then stay in the open so she could be caught at the end. At that point you just have to assume it’s all over for you and live the hermit life forever, cause that’s as good as it’ll get for you. 16. Arkangel- probably one of the more forgettable episodes. The tech gives overbearing parents a stalkerish overview of their kid’s lives, which is an infringement of individual humanity and privacy. The kid had a pretty believable descent into criminal/less moral behavior after being smothered her whole life and having no sort of freedom. 17. Metal head - I am posting this after still being inebriated following my black museum review just FYI. I am not a fan in general of bleak future apocalyptic fatalism stories, and when they tie in black and white imagery to make stories seem all the more dramatic, it’s even worse. Robot r2d2 dogs control the planet in what is assumed a military weapon invention. I just found myself not really caring because like most other bfafs (bleak future apocalyptic fatalism story) it doesn’t matter even if you win. 18. The Entire History of You - cool concept, neat how the capturing of memories results in the dude finding out his kid isn’t his and his wife was unfaithful 19. Shut Up and Dance - if not for the brutal consequences in the end, it was the least black mirrory ep yet outside of the pilot because it seemed very modern day. It’s definitely started to ebb away from the British original writing as it goes into netflixland. I was wondering why the dude cared so much about getting off for getting off, like who cares if everyone sees your pp at that point unless you have a small one but then it turning out he was into child porn made it all comprehendible. All in all this episode just kinda felt like a waste of time despite it having my guy Bronn in it 20. The Waldo Moment - I forgot to write about this one but it’s probably cause this was one of the weaker episodes I’ve seen. An animated character becoming a overpowering political figure is kinda just an obnoxious idea, and taking the clever comedian out and replacing him with a lesser fill in that still rises to the top was even less believable. The only way it makes any sort of sense is if reddit took over the world and everyone just went with the meme pick. 21. Nosedive - yep, here is when I remember Black Mirror started going downhill. The episode was a nice little jab at influencers being artificial and obsessive about meaningless internet glory and fame. I could see this society being driven by a rating system like that and liked the ideas in it. Bryce Dallas Howard is pretty hot but the episode itself just wasn’t for me. Idk if I rated it low because it was bad because it wasn’t horrible, it just didn’t click with me and I didn’t enjoy watching it lol. 22.
