Saw an online article criticizing the new resident evil show on netflix, didn't know there was one out there, decided to take a shot because hey i like zombies and i'm halfway through episode 2 and it's garbage, it's a teenage drama with a backdrop of zombies.

Just finished The Terminal List. I'm curious what those who have watched it think more than anything.

The plot was your standard "oh it was the government cover-up and now this super soldier goes on a revenge rampage" plot, and I thought it just got more and more unrealistic as the episodes went on.

However, the action scenes for the most part I thought were very well executed.

I thought it was better than reviews said. They had a lot of things that were realistic that people may not realize as well. One thing that stood out is how the FBI was escorted on Coronado to the SEAL area. It’s definitely a secure area on base that you don’t even want to accidentally drive towards without proper clearance and escort.

What did you find unrealistic?

I’m two episodes into The Orville: New Horizons on Hulu.

The first two seasons were a guilty pleasure, a carbon copy of Star Trek with a few serious themes wrapped up in Seth McFarlane’s humor. Not a great show by any stretch, but not bad. Third season is much more of the same. There’s some interesting sci-fi elements to be had overall, but the show lacks pop. Good, far from great - but with this reportedly the final season, I’m too invested to not finish it off.

Spoiler

For those Mass Effect fans - the Kaylon origin story is basically the story of the Geth. A few different details, but the same tale; Forcing a sentient being (even synthetic) into servitude will lead to bloody rebellion.

I’m #teamKaylon. Eff them Quarians.

The action scenes were tremendous for the most part, don't get me wrong. You can clearly see they were very detail-oriented with how they handled weapons, movement, firing, etc. with the military personnel.

The unrealistic parts were just in relation to the plot, really.

Spoiler

I think the most unrealistic thing I can remember was the Navy lawyer walking into the building and somehow getting to the Admiral's office with a freakin IED strapped to his chest.

And it just seemed like each episode got more and more ridiculous with what was being done from a plot perspective and how he would take out people on his list. The landslide scene was hilariously bad, too.

The lawyer thing is debatable imo. I could totally seeing it being realistic. People in those positions are examined through a microscope through routine security clearance checks and other things to prevent anything like that from ever happening. However, a lot of higher ups just get minimal exams and get “pre-screened” and wove through many checks. If someone were to be compromised, for a very short term, they would still have the same unadulterated access.

I’ve been on Coronado and was in a van that accidentally went to the wrong part of the island - and the van was even registered to the SEALs. If you don’t have the correct, I’ll call it, markings on your card then you’re getting turned around real quick. So if a high ranking Navy lawyer went through the main gate, then the SEALs gate with a marking for special access, it’s possible that they could never be physically searched.

Just my imo though and I could be totally wrong. I am not currently nor have I ever been a part of any base security.

Those buildings don't have metal detectors or ANY sort of screening process for people?

And even past that, just some of the plot justifications that were made to advance to the next action scene were "eh". Him executing the CEO guy in the middle of the street then escaping police. Him escaping police after being shot AND falling through a landslide because HRT is apparently the slowest people ever to traverse a hillside.

Maybe I just have "One Man Army" fatigue these days, but seeing shows where one dude just plows through armies of highly trained individuals who are supposedly at his same skill level just really irks me now I guess.

All of this being said, the show was definitely better than the reviews gave it.

I can't speak for those buildings. Like I said, I got rightfully turned away and have never been in them. So I can't answer that. But in general, once you're on a base, it's expected that you're suppose to be there. I have yet to see a metal detector on any base. But, there are random inspections at front gates which I have been subject to. In sensitive areas there are further ID checks and whatnot to ensure you're suppose to have access to the area.

The CEO thing I agree with more. But at the same time SWAT hadn't arrived yet and there weren't many, if any, defensive countermeasures in place. It's not like the area was pre-cleared by Secret Service or anything. It was just Horn walking out and giving a brief press conference with a handful of former operators as security. Speaking from second hand stories, when shot in combat you may not even feel it for a couple of hours due to the adrenaline and just pure focus on what is happening in the moment. So I can forgive that. Covering his gunshot wound with an AED pad was ridiculous as it wouldn't really fully cover/seal the wound. Plus if it even did create a seal, it'd most likely just rip off the clotting when you pulled it off. Debatable if it'd be better than nothing to an extent. He did recover way too quickly from the gunshot for sure. But I get that you can't really have a multi-week or month time jump in this show. The landslide was too Hollywood imo.

I fully agree on the One Man Army fatigue. But I will say that this, imo, wasn't too far off from realistic as far as knowledge, combat, tactics, etc. I noticed they left some things out which was most likely intentional. But I think they also included a lot of legit info and tactics that aren't generally shown.

As bad as the acting is, give Act of Valor a watch. The "actors" are all SEALs and it's pretty legit as far as tactics and all that from what I recall.

Not at all surprised the Netflix RE series is garbage.   They couldn't get it right with all those movies (though having Paul Anderson direct...not a great start lol).

Did catch a nice BBC procedural drama - Criminal.   Lots of great guest appearances - David Tennant & Haley Atwell are terrific as usual in their solo appearances...but man, Sandeep is a massive gut punch reveal.   Highly recommended.
