Talent or Scheme on Defense?

It's both, plus injuries.

It'd be nice if Adams and Biegel would get on the field. It'd have been nice if Randall stayed healthy. Losing Shields has hurt as much as losing Nick Collins thus far.

Busts by Ted:

Rollins, Thornton, Bradford, Datone, Worthy (actually surprising how many players we all like on defense the last five drafts).

Apparently misused by Dom or should've been brought back by Ted:

Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde.

He plays safety in Buffalo. He would not have started here at safety. Buffalo would take both Ha-Ha and Burnett over him if given the chance. Would he be better at the 3rd safety role then Brice? Probably but not at that contract.

Don't think he was misused or should have been brought back.

I think that's probably the closest thing to the truth out of all of it.  We have talented players, but we don't have a truly dominant player.  I feel like a Joey Bosa/Jalen Ramsey or Charles Woodson type of game wrecker would make this defense a top 10 defense.

You know what Jalen Ramsey, Charles Woodson, and Joey Bosa all have in common?  They were all top 5 draft picks.  That's what people refuse to acknowledge.  When you're consistently picking in the 20-32 range, your chances at drafting blue chippers go down significantly.

This.  I can't find any argument that says it's one thing or the other.  Players are missing assignments and not tackling well in space, and there are play calls that make you pull your hair out.  How many times have we seen Dom call off-man or zone coverage when the offense only has to go a few yards?  Too many times to count.

You can't run a good scheme without talent. Some coaches can do more with less, but let's not make the assumption that you can win a SB with average talent as long as the coach is good. Pittsburgh has a plethora of good talent. Good DL, good LB core led by one of the best in the league, pass rush is good, secondary is young and ascending. Likewise, Chicago has a ton of good talent. I'd give GB the secondary lean, otherwise both teams are about equal.

Investing tons of draft capital does not = talent. TT has whiffed a ton and a lot in rounds 1-2.

That's precisely why you can't live or die by the draft.

True, which is why we should probably accept nothing less than a top 10 pick this year.  If we play out of the top ten, we need to get into the top ten.  Our defense needs one of those players.

For Haha, there have been rumors he's been playing through injury. Not sure how true that is though. I thought he got a bit over hyped after last season. I think he'll be a solid-good safety in the league, but I don't see him as an elite, game-changing type of player.

And the solution is?

First, get a DC who knows what he's doing. Two, use all 3 phases of roster building, FA, draft and trades. Three, don't start players like MD Jennings and Brad Jones, just to name a few, and just be satisified.

Dom knows what he is doing but the scheme is to difficult for today's players. The game is being dumbed down

Do you truly believe that Dom has no idea what to do, or do you think he's out of touch with today's league?
