Aggressive 2nd Quarter Mock

Pace is retained and informed this will be the year they expect marked improvement.

Coaching Changes

Fox, Loggains, and Rodgers are all fired. Fangio chooses to sign elsewhere after he is not chosen for the HC position.

Head Coach

Matt Nagy

MattNagy-2016.jpg

- Nagy has been under Andy Reid for years, and apparently is a major reason for the explosive changes in the Chiefs’ offense. The Chiefs are a team that has been well known for consistent scoring and minimal turnovers, and now they have Alex Smith, in his 12th year, easily playing the best ball of his career. The offense adapts quickly to defensive adjustments, is difficult to gameplan due to how varied their personnel, calls, and how they vary their attack all over the field.

Offensive Coordinator

John DeFilippo

USATSI_9292896_168380503_lowres-e1463253

The current QB caoch for Philly, who has spent more time than anyone with Wentz. He was denied the chance to become the OC for the Jets, but he is ready to move on as an OC. While he will likely be here for only one, maybe two, years he gets enticed by building his resume with two franchise QBs.He will not be calling the plays, but will work with Trubisky day in and day out just as Nagy will. I’d make a 4 year offer that pays him as a top 5 OC.

* If he wants to have one of the offensive staff from KC follow, my vote goes to Andy Heck, the former Chicago Bear lineman and OL coach for KC

Defensive Coordinator

Ed Donatell

donatell.jpg?w=640

Fangio chose to move on so we keep the consistent coaching of Donatell. He is familiar with the system and players, and likely will want to turn up the aggressiveness compared to Fangio. His work with the DBs has been exemplary, having Fuller, Amukamara, and Amos all having career years and Jackson having a hell of a rookie season. He is long overdue for his shot as DC and we take advantage of that here.

Special Teams Coordinator

Chris Horton

214249.vresize.350.425.medium.69.png

- Honestly I stole this from Madmike, credit goes to him for this one. His mock listed him and made sense, and I am simply too lazy to research special teams. It shouldn’t be hard to improve from Rodgers though.

Cuts

**** All cap numbers are spotrac estimates without rollovers added.

1. Released Mike Glennon

- Obviously.
(Saved: $11,500,000)

2. Released Pernell McPhee

- Had an amazing first year in Chicago. Has been nothing like that since, his most memorable play of the last two years was screaming at his QB while in street clothes.
(Saved: $7,075,000)

3. Released Dion Sims

- Mediocre showings do not equate to him being worth his deal.
(Saved: $5,666,666)

4. Released Bobby Massie
(Saved: $5,600,000)

6. Released Markus Wheaton

- It was a move made on the chance he could take the top off defenses.  We look for a more proven option.
(Saved: $5,000,000)

7. Released Willie Young

- He just is done physically. Wish he could have gone fishing more often this year.
(Saved: $4,500,000)

8. Released Marcus Cooper

- He has played pretty well, and that may continue but he has had numerous blown coverages that we were simply lucky for them to miss. I believe Amukamara outplays him over the course of the season.
(Saved: $4,500,000)

9. Released Quintin Demps

- Veteran leadership was a plus, but not worth it any more.
(Saved: $3,666,666)

10. Released Josh Sitton

- Love having him on the team but he is getting next to no push. His body seems to be breaking down and we cannot have him failing to make a pocket for Trubisky to step up in.

(Saved $8 mil)

Total Cap Space (per Spotrac) - $88,600,000

*** This does NOT include any rollover addition to salary cap.

Re- Sign

CB - Kyle Fuller - 4 years $40 mil ($19 mil guaranteed)

- Bright spot for the season, has been the best CB we have vs the run as well. His play has been stellar for most of the games, giving only the occasional gaffe like all but the most elite cover CBs. But how many of them tackle like Fuller? Exactly. He is looking like a stud and Donatrell wants to retain the talent he developed.

CB Prince Amukamara - 2 years $16 million ($12 mil guaranteed)

- This may change, but as of right now he has played pretty well and could go for a 3 year deal. He has played on one year deals twice, the guaranteed might be too much for him to pass up.

WR - Cameron Meredith - 2 years $10 million

- He missed all season with a knee injury, likely has a 2 year deal or one year prove it deal. I think it safer to get a 2 year deal to make sure he recovers, if so we can offer a bigger extension if he begins to ascend rapidly.

P - Pat O’Donnell - $5 years, $12.5 mil (Roughly 10th in the league)

- He has done really well, no reason to move on from him. He is leading in touchbacks, 6th in punts inside the 20, and if he had a decent special teams coordinator his net average would be much better.

WR - Tre McBride - 2 years, $3 million

- He may not make the final roster, but he at least warrants a flier. Might even be glad to retain him in case of an injury or if Meredith heals slower than expected.

HB - Benny Cunningham - 2 years, $1.8 mil ($900K guaranteed)

- Nothing special, just a guy who can do a little bit of everything and can be a returner in a pinch. He will be replaced in a year or two for a younger reserve but he can hold the reserve spot down and handle garbage time to prevent injuries to our starting duo.

OT -  Tom Compton - 2 years, $3 million

Needs some level of consistency. He is nothing special but gives a year where we do not have to look for a FA tackle where we would spend 3 times as much.

QB - Mark Sanchez - 1 year, $2 million

He is nowhere near what you want from a starter but is a cheap back up with a ton of experience. He has also seemed like a solid mentor for those after he left the Jets. He has played in AFC Championship games and can help Trubisky in the film room.

DE - Mitch Unrein - 1 year, 1.5 million

I’m not a fan of his starting, but he is a blue collar guy who can make a few good plays His positive is eating up OL and freeing up the LB behind him.

Cap Left - $55.8 million

Free Agents

EDGE - Ezekial Ansah - 5 years $82 million ($51 mil guaranteed like Chandler Jones)

We need to hit Rodgers and Stafford…often. With Houston, Young, and McPhee gone, that leaves us Floyd. While he is a great talent, he is not a one man wrecking crew. His opposite becomes Ansah, who may have spent his whole career with his hand in the dirt, but with his elite athleticism he can adapt to play standing, plus when we go to nickel he can still get back to what he is used to. Ansah plays for us in his prime, with a staggered salary like $18/14.5/14.5/15/21. Essentially we are taking Glennon and McPhees’ lost 2018 salaries to front load his deal and make it far more team friendly in the long term.

*** He may be re-signed, if so I have a note below for the 1st round pick ***

Sammy Watkins - 4 years $28 million ($17 mil guaranteed)

Physically gifted to be sure, he has been the one getting safeties rolled over to him to keep him from getting the deep ball but he has not produced as well as the Rams had hoped. They move on from him and Nagy gets some of the speed he wants. Nagy gets to work with him and try to develop youth around Trubisky for the long haul. With this deal he gets a lot of guaranteed so he knows he will be here for the long haul rather than have to learn new systems repeatedly and be a journeyman.

WR - Terrelle Pryor - 3 years $15 million ($8 guaranteed)

Terrelle is not meshing in WAS for whatever reason. He is not declining physically or anything of the sort, but he is likely being asked to do too many short routes. When he busted out in CLE he was not someone who worked short routes often, he was a major deep threat who used his scary size/speed combination to get the big play. His 818 air yards ranked seventh among NFL wide receivers in 2016, shorting just how much he was focused on making plays on the ball. Nagy wants speed and speed Pryor has, and hopefully this stop in WAS has hurt his value to where we can ****** him up. He would be the number two while Meredith recovered or the three when Meredith was healthy, though Meredith is the one who would move to the slot as he is a better route runner and more dependable in the short game. Should Meredith take a longer time and ascends after like Fuller, Pryor holds the fort down next to Watkins.

* I know this sounds like a steal but honestly I feel like there are 7 or so guys that will be contacted before Pryor in FA. Fitz, Adams, Landry, Lee, Jeffrey, Moncreif, Richardson, Watkins, and maybe even Brown (age) will be in higher demand (at least those who make it to FA).

OLB - Aaron Lynch - 3 years $12 million ($6 million guaranteed)

- Another young talent, with the loss of Houston, Young, and McPhee we need bodies rushing the passer. Hopefully he uses his change of scenery as motivation and develops like he seemed he would.

ILB/OLB - Kevin Pierre Louis - 3 years 9 million

- Physical specimen who is not a pass rusher but has upside. Physically is strikingly similar to Ryan Shazier. He would be able to take on the Acho role at minimum.

TE - Troy Niklas - 2 years $4 million

- He is what we wanted in Sims as a blocker, for much much less.

QB - Tyler Bray 2 years $3 million.

- Simply put, he knows Nagy’s system. He was drafted in 2013 when Nagy was first introduced as the QB coach, and has been through every QB meeting with Nagy since. He works as a cheap number three because he is a veteran who might have limited potential, but he will help implement the system and can at least be a system QB if Trubisky and Sanchez have an injury or needs taken out for mop up duty. After seeing us go to the 4th QB last year I want two QBs who can back up Trubisky. Hopefully he helps expedite the learning curve for the others.

FB - Anthony Sherman - 2 years, 3 million ($2 million guaranteed)

-He’s been a damn good blocker this year, and even with how KC spreads teams out and changes personnel Sherman still is on the field for about 18% of the snaps. He also is in the RB room so he can aid the transition for Howard and Cohen. Howard has seemed to run well off Burton, he should run even better off Sherman until we get a younger alternative to groom into the system. This means Burton now gets cut as well, saving about $600K.

WR/HB - DeAnthony Thomas - 2 years, $3 million

- Let me preface this by saying I do not believe he makes the roster. But he has worked with Nagy for all 4 years of his career. He may be able to be the 4th HB as well, but really he is here to get the rest of the WR corps a system veteran to help can match with either of them, then he gets the spot. Normally I would go with youth, but if they can’t beat out Thomas bluntly then I feel you have to go with the guy who might help the development of the overall corps. It’s a 3-way battle, and one of the three will be out.

C/OG -Zach Fulton - 3 years, 9 million ($4 million guaranteed)

- With Whitehair moving out to guard and with Long opposite of him, there is no room for a starter at guard. But Fulton is a competent NFL lineman who has played both center and guard. He hasn’t been dominant by any means but has been consistent and has been in Nagy/Reid’s system since 2014. He is able to help expedite the OL’s adjustments and comes here knowing he gets to compete for the starting center position. He and Kush make sure there is little to no chance someone has to be an emergency center like Sitton was today.

Cap Space - $9.8 million before any cuts.

*** If Ansah gets re-signed by DET then my top free agent target becomes Malcolm Butler or Trumaine Johnson (though they would not get as large of a deal, it would still be considerable. I will continue on as if Ansah was signed.

Draft

1- Minkah Fitzpatrick - CB

- He is an awesome defensive back prospect, he can play CB, NB, or safety (and does) and he reminds me of Jalen Ramsey. While I do not think he is as polished as Ramesy or quite the physical specimen, he has fantastic instincts and doesn’t shy away from big moments (see his late INT vs A&M). With someone like Bowles, who loves to utilize multiple looks and coverages with unusual defensive back groupings. With someone like Fitzpatrick he could put his best defensive backs out there, and he could be moved around to be a safety, NB, or CB.

*** Alternate if Ansah is re-signed by DET and we make our large signing a CB***
 Arden Key - OLB
- Physical specimen who drops due to his temporary leave from the team, injury, and the fact he hasn’t looked quite the same after coming back. There is Derwin, Minkah, and Conner available, but we have two safeties already and the CB corps is professional at least. What we need is to hit Rodgers and Stafford… a lot. Pairing Key and Floyd gives the Bears a dynamic pass rushing duo to build with for the next 10 years.

2 - Orlando Brown - OT

- Massie is frequently not getting a good push in the run game, and QB hurries continue to become too common even with a quick passing game. While I do not know if Brown will be there, there are 5-6 OTs that are all vying for their spots. Williams and McGlinchey are pretty much a high pick locks, there is Trey Adams, Rankins, and Hyatt are all showing promise as well. I prefer Adams but think he goes in the first. Brown has plenty of athleticism to play OT in the NFL and as we have seen in NE that McDaniels does well with OTs who have great length (Vollmer, Solder, Cannon, etc). Brown fits that as well, very well. He is someone who could be plugged into the line and be an upgrade over Massie.

4- Nick Fitzgerald - QB

- We have Trubisky, who is there for the long run, and we have Sanchez who should be a capable reserve in the short term. But we need to stock the shelves for the long term. Fitzgerald has physical gifts to spare but is not a QB who is ready to run an NFL offense. He allows us to have a practice QB who can do rollouts well and act as a mobile QB we will be facing, and after a year or two is someone with similar physical gifts to Trubisky so we will not need to dramatically alter the gameplan when he comes in and they can grow together as they would both be in the same system from day one.

4- Dallas Goedert - TE

With Miller going down we need a young TE to add to the corps. He is a solid prospect athletically and may be someone to add to the slot to take over a MIller-like role. He, like Miller, is a receiver more than a blocker, but that is the role for Niklas. Dallas will be able to stretch the field and between him and Shaeheen we might have a mini Gronk/Hernandez combo (less homicidal of course).

5- Taven Bryan - NT/5T

- I am a Gator fanatic but I really think this guy can be a gem. He is physically a freakish guy. Quick get off, very violent and powerful punch, and has a relentless motor. I think when the Combine gets here he will jump to the middle rounds but for now he looks like he could be a guy who can play anywhere on the DL. He will be able to do what we ask of Unrein and will also give some sneaky passrush occasionally. He’s being called Watt-like. Physically there are a lot of similarities, but Watt was miles ahead of him in skill and technique.

6- Brock Ruble - T/G

- Talented and massive, he is simply a poor technician on the outside. From the small bit I have seen he is physically gifted and mean, but I have seen him get his head dip too much and seen him get caught up on countermoves. I think he can be a solid guard early though as when he anchored he was a wall and in the run game he was mean as hell. If he gets some development he could be a solid RT as well.

7-  Eddy Pineiro - K (TRADE BACK INTO IT IF WE LOSE OURS FOR INMAN)

- Barth isn’t cutting it, and we need a better option. Pineiro has a boot and could use that leg strength to help drive through the winds off Lake Michigan. I think he will have to battle an UFA as they want to start fresh, but Eddy has plenty of leg to drive the ball and has been consistent for the Gators.

* An equal sign represents a positional battle.

Notes -

- Whitehair has had struggles with his snaps for some reason. If this continues then I move him to RG to replace Sitton, and let Kush, Fulton, and Grasu battle it out for the center position. I expect Futlon or Kush to win the center job, the other moves to swing guard.

- Fitzgerald would not be on the practice squad but would not be dressing for gameday.

- With this WR corps I would expect Watkins to lead in receptions (quick routes, bubble screens, slants, etc then going deep intermittently) followed by Meredith (intermediate routes, going over the middle, etc) and Pryor well behind but with the highest YPC (deep and short routes like slants to let him use his size advantage.

- White, McBride, Gentry and Thomas are all starting from zero. None have a set position guaranteed and will fight to earn their spots. I know White’s deal is guaranteed, but he is no longer being looked at as a building block, he is on a one year flier and can be cut if he is not meeting the standards we need. I don’t care if his salary is guaranteed, I’m not holding a check for him just to be a liability.

- Amukamara, Fuller and Fitzpatrick are all competing for the outside spots, but Fitzpatrick and Fuller would also compete for the NB spot as well. Simply put, the best play, even if that means the nickelback is the highest paid of the CBs. Regardless, Fitzpatrick may not be confined to one position, but will have just as many starter reps as any other DB. I would expect to let Fuller and Fitzpatrick both rotate on the outside and NB to let Donetell seek some advantage.

- Donetell is a DB specialist, so two things he knows - 1) getting the best talent out there possible is a must and 2) a DB’s best friend is a ferocious pass rush. Our nickel DL could be-

Ansah - Hicks (0 tech) - Lynch with hands in the dirt and Floyd roaming freely (allowing for multiple stunts). That may also mean Amos plays as a LB in a pass situation (like Branch and Vaccaro) or mirroring the mobile QBs, with Freeman or DT at LB. Fuller and Amukamara on the outside, Callahan on the inside, and Jackson and Fitzpatrick deep.

- While Lynch is being assumed the top rotational passrusher role, Irving and Pierre-Louis ( or whoever) would be inserted if they have the hot hand. Productivity matters more than pay.

I’m not liking this mock much, it just seems like there is too many moving pieces just because. Just my opinion though.

I understand, there is a lot of movement. Only two of the players from KC are even meant to actually play snaps in the real season, one of which is a fullback. But Nagy/Reid run a complex system, and I think the players might do better having someone who has spent a lot of time in it to help them.

One big reason for Pryor is that I am worried about Meredith having a long time off like Fuller and I don't want to have to rely on White.

There are only 6 other FA pieces, Ansah and Lynch are just to replace McPhee, Houston, and Young. Niklas is Sims for less and a better blocker,  Pierre-Louis is like Jones but more upside IMO. Watkins and Pryor are guys that are needed, but if Meredith is rocking through and expected to be at 100% then Pryor is not needed as badly.

I'm really just cutting a lot of what I consider to be 'bad fat'. Cooper was overrated, Wheaton can't stay healthy, Massie has been far too inconsistent, Sitton aging, McPhee and Young aging and injured, etc.

They're picked up for a reason, but most several are being counted on as placeholders while other player develop (Pryor, Amukamara, Sanchez/Bray, Unrein, Fulton and Kush are all examples of those.)

any thought of flipping your first and second rounders.  LT in round one and cb in round two.  they say a left tackle is a QB best friend and Mike McGlichey would look really friendly in a bears uniform.  Mike and Mitch could bunk together in training camp.

I really doubt they go after a LT early in he draft after just signing the current one to a good contract.

yeah they signed Leno but he is average and you could move him to a guard spot.  If your picking in the top 10, you got your WR upgraded locked up in free agency, and  you got younger at OLB.  A franchise LT is the best option to help a young QB and you are helping the RBs out.  I just think LT is being over looked as a need.

I wouldn't have too much of an issue, I just felt there were better chances of a solid OT in the 2nd than CB. I feel like CB is more top heavy.

It's really hard to figure where we will be, we might find ourselves in the teens, but if top 10 I would REALLY like to see about a trade back. Say like from 6 to 12, that could be another first. Look at what was paid by KC and HOU on their trade ups. Not needing a QB and not being top 3, we are likely not passing any generational talents and have plenty of spots that can (and should) be upgraded.

I do like thinking of the tantrum bearable especially  would be if we traded back and had two firsts, then drafted two WRs. Lol.

I was thinking long term. Leno is locked in for 2 years at least but Massie is a poor starter and needs replaced.  Trey Adams or McGlichey could kick over later if need be. After next season he would cost under $3 mil in dead cap and save $6.2 mil.

Seeing how well Dallas' OL has helped Elliot and Dak shows exactly why you want to pile on talent all across the OL. It helps the run and pass game dramatically.

But that isn’t the New Orleans model, not that I necessarily agree with it I personally just want the best team.

That is true, but David Haugh of the Tribune wrote at length how Pace was not aiming to follow the Saint's model. It would be through defense and running the ball to go with Trubisky being the key cog. His indications seem to point more towards following the Ram's model with Goff (though Gurley can actually catch the ball, maybe we replicate his running with Howard and Cohen gets those catches?)

While we see a lot of similarities, I think Pace will definitely have different goals and desires as opposed to NO when he was there. He likely had large reservations about the lack of defensive talent, he just wasn't the GM and had no authority to do anything about it.
