2021: The Offseason of Discontent

I can understand siding with the players, but I don't see why people think the owners should happily give them what they want. It's easy to say they make enough money when you're not the one lowering your profits. Any of us would probably take a similar stance in their position.

The players got bent over in the past, and it will take multiple negotiating cycles to get them where they need to be.

I just want baseball back. so hopefully this doesn't drag on too much longer.

Not a single person has advocated for that. The starting point is a good faith offer and they couldn't even do that. They didn't negotiate for over a month, putting themselves up against the deadline, leaked a bunch of nonsense to make it look like the players were the cause of the failed negotiations and then came with a "best and FINAL offer" rather than doing their damnedest to get this thing done.

There was nothing good faith about the entire process. It was another move to pressure the players into conceding, again. Nothing more.

FWIW, the players have been stockpiling enough money to cover stipends until mid-2023. They are dug into their foxhole and they're in this for the long haul. If the owners continue with their facade, then we're in very real danger of losing a season.

You...don't know this? And yet you have opinions on the CBA and talk about pro player fans making assumptions without critical thinking. Come on. This is a bit right?

Way to take my post our of context. I said siding with players basically automatically, without any critical thinking. I feel like fans side against owners automatically just because they are billionaires.

The player share is already 48-49% isn’t it? How much more could they possibly want? The contracts in MLB for players are already absolutely absurd.

Also, I don’t agree with players getting paid quicker. Smaller Market teams like the A’s and Rays will never have a chance.

I side with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani because I pay money to watch them play baseball. Arte Moreno can go to hell.

MLB made $10.7B in 2021

MLB players made $4.05B in 2021

4.05/10.7=38%

You're embarrassing yourself.

I was legitimately shocked (and it’s my own fault) to see baseball was the lowest player minimum professional contract of the major sports as well. Embarrassing.

The owners have yet to make an offer that isn't a paycut despite revenues being up 30%.

And THIS is my biggest real issue here. If every proposal your boss (anyones) gave you was an off the top pay cut, would anyone else take that seriously?

I think fans have totally resigned themselves to the MLB being a Fortune 500 company that has no other purpose but to maximize profits. Sure, most owners have always been like this, but there were some who had competitive spirit and prioritized winning.

Why should any owner sign a free agent ever again if it just lowers their profits? That mentality of "the WS trophy is just a piece of metal" undermines the integrity of the sport.

Imagine telling someone 20 years ago that a Steinbrenner would not only advocate for luxury taxes, but would vote to LOWER the threshold to be taxed!
