Should we be keeping an eye on the Falcons?

After looking terrible early on, their offense has gradually improved. Arthur Smith has managed to unlock Cordarrelle Patterson as a week-to-week offensive weapon while Kyle Pitts looks just as advertised. While the defense still has an aversion to protecting late leads, the Falcons now find themselves occupying a playoff spot. Could they be a team that might seriously threaten to make a noise in the NFC down the stretch?

Oh. Why is that?

They only have narrow wins against bad teams.  Right now, their best win is a two point victory over a Saints team who lost their QB for the season.  Their biggest margin of victory is a 7 point win over the Jets.

There's no evidence they can step to anyone right now.  Frankly, I'll be shocked if they hold onto that playoff spot.

When people talk about QB's having to 'elevate their teams' show me a team that goes and dies by their QB more then the Falcons. This entire forum is generally sleeping on Matt Ryan like it's 1303 (kudo's if you get that reference). The Falcons consist of Ryan, Patterson, Terrel, Jarret, Pitts and Jones (and maybe Foye Olunkon (sp?)) with a few bright sparks like Hawkins and sometimes one random Olineman or safety stepping up. The rest? Purely mediocre journeyman level of play at best.

Beating this team is easy on paper. On offence: Get a passrush going (not hard against like the 28th Oline of the league) and stop the run (once again not that hard) and on offence just run the ball with a bruising back away from Jarret (screens also work but are at some risk of being dunked on by D. Jones) and if you're going to throw avoid AJ Terrel.

Basically, if teams follow my recipe almost any team in the league can beat them, if they don't they can beat any team in the league. Overall this team needs another 2016esque draft and they will be a competitor once again. Give this team a real defence and they will be competing for a SB.

Pretty much this.  Right now, there's 5 teams that are effectively locked into the playoffs (ARI, GB, TB, DAL, and LAR).  The last 2 spots are up for grabs, and whoever plays well down the stretch likely gets the spot.  You've got two spots for New Orleans, Atlanta, Carolina, Minnesota, Seattle, and maybe San Francisco.  Everyone below San Francisco is probably out of the playoffs.  If New Orleans can go .500 the rest of the way, they probably sneak into the playoffs.

SOMEBODY has to be the 7 seed

5 slots are basically locked up. I think the Saints probably make it, but they are far from a certainty.

Then there's a big clog of Falcons, Panthers, Vikings, Seahawks, 49ers, Bears, Eagles, Giants who all have 3 or 4 wins.

I don't think its unreasonable for the Falcons to survive out of that group considering their offense, and at the very least I don't think its unreasonable to assume they will remain relevant in the conversation until the end of the season.

Falcons will most likely be drafting Top 10 again next Spring
In terms of DVOA, they are below Houston and just above Detroit coming in at # 31 in the league.
Playoffs ? no effing chance

They tried to hang on a little longer with Matt Ryan - and based on that contract- they had little choice. But this Falcons team is a Dead Man Walking...

Prime example of over reliance on stats.

The Falcons had two aweful games, vs the Eagles and Panthers, but were competative in all other games. On paper the Bucs game looks like a blowout but they were hanging with them untill quite late in the game and the Washington should have been a win with better coaching. Could they have lost vs the Dolphins, Giants and Saints? Sure, but most teams have that kind of variable in their wins and losses.

Overall this team is what it is, a .500 team that is slowly learning, growing and being battle tested. While it has defenitive weaknesses this is still a team capable of beating a lot of other teams on any given sunday and would absolutely obliterate Houston and Detroit.

Matt Ryan, the person they are "hanging on with a little longer" is currently the 7th ranked QB by PFF (and that is with two horrendous games mind you), about 7 places above Aaron *Cough* Rodgers.
