Offensive Gameplan

Davonte Booker will start at running back this week. He will be utilized in both the running game and the passing game. AP will be used as a short yardage back.

We plan to spread out the defense Cancun to take away the edge rush and the pressure from the interior DL.  With a diminished cornerback group we feel very comfortable in our ability to run a no huddle offense featuring a mixture of 3 WR, 2 TE, 4 WR, and 5 WR sets (4 & 5WR sets will have Knox splitting out wide)

We intend to attack the seams with Knox the flat with Schwartz and Booker and the intermediate area between the secondary and LBs with Gallup, Davis, & Kirk (as well as our other options). While we certainly respect Tre White and Byard, we definitely plan to take a couple deep shots, away from both.

We intend to play keep away with Time of Possession while using a majority of no huddle offense to keep the defense wearing down. We are going to utilize Schwartz on a few Jet Sweeps and Reverses. Conklin will be utilized at times to help chip Rousseau and protect Stafford.

Defensive Gameplan

While I am probably starting to sound like a broken record I am OK with that. I am going to run a defense very similar to what I have run against Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray because Pat Mahomes, while arguably better than both is a similar style of QB.

We will use the defensive line to crash the pocket and to play a contain. We will use the OLBs to pressure Mahomes and keep all the plays occurring from within the pocket. If they're going to use traditional runs and/or throw the ball we want it going up the middle or coming from within the pocket respectively.  This will also allow us to be prepared for the possibility of Taysom Hill gadget plays; whether he is lining up as a RB, doing designed QB runs, lining up as a receiver, running the wildcat, we are ready for it.

We expect to to see screens, spread offenses, RPOs, and crossing routes no doubt. With all of that being said, we plan to run primarily zone coverage in this game to keep all eyes forward. Woods will maintain deep coverage and Jeremy Chinn will retake his Robber role. Zaven Collins will reclaim is ILB role Opposite Devin Bush.

In Nickel we are going to role Chinn down into the box, bring in Holland to play the other safety position and bring on Norwood to play the NB. In this situation, Max Crosby and Devin Bush will remain on the field in an 'offset' formation to help Chinn against the RB/TEs.

We expect some deep shots hence Woods staying deep, but we also expect a heavy passing effort from Cancun as their running offense leaves a lot to be desired. Especially when you consider their likely best option is Juice due to the rest being irl backups.

We will match DBs for Wide Receivers on the field in 4WR and 5WR sets (if used).

Offense

Finally welcoming back David Bakhtiari at left tackle, we have the ability to open up our offense a bit and play more aggressively. We will still chip defenders from Bakh’s side occasionally to give him a little help as he comes back from injury, but for the most part we are relying on five and six man protection, letting Rodney Hudson handle the line calls and counting on Mahomes’ legs to get him out of trouble if pressure still gets in.

We are giving Patterson the start at running back but the truth is that we’ll use him all over the field as a mismatch with the Death Valley CBs, which really aren’t that good apart from Slay, whom we assume will be on Sutton. If we see a different CB lining up on Sutton, we’re taking some shots his way, especially if we get single coverage there.

We want to establish a running game early to set up play action, especially when we have Mattison or Stevenson in the backfield. The goal is to get the linebackers and one of the safeties to creep up in the box. With Schultz and Juszczyk strong run blockers, we feel we can push around the smaller defensive ends on the outside, so most of our run plays will be off-tackle or toss plays to the outside. We also want to mix in Patterson and Moore on jet sweeps to further stretch the defense in the run game.

Defense

This week we face off against a Death Valley team that we feel as though we have the potential to match up well against. Their receivers aren't the best, which is good news for us, who has a great/elite corner, a solid safety tandem, and a very underrated linebacker group, specifically in coverage. Despite Matthew Stafford having a great year, we like the fact that he's a pocket passer, as we feel as though we can get to the QB with our defensive front 4 while sending some pressure in specific situations.

We will be running a mixture of a lot of man, 3 under 3, and 2 under schemes, primarily out of Nickel and Big Nickel personnel. We will be using that S/CB to match their 3rd WR, albeit we don't believe that their outside weapons are anything special.

We will be using some "Skate concepts" to neutralize the running back as an extra run fit in the box and out of the backfield as well, while having White man to man locking down their best single receiver.

We will use some Cover 2 concepts to disguise the man pre-snap, as well as some Fire Zone pressure:

We also have a Ruby Overload pressure that we like to get off of the field if they decide to use their extra blocker (TE), which would be smart considering some of our Front 4's ability to get to the QB.

Yeah, but how many times in a row can Stafford spot the other team 14 points off turnovers?

What's that have to do with Death Valley vs. Cancun?

Stafford through most of this season has been one of the top QBs in the NFL. Every QB has a bad game or 2.

Not every QB can throw for 400 yards and 5 touchdowns with a 70% completion rate tho

As much as I'd love to go with the Stafford sux this week argument ya'll putting down. San Fran runs a large majority cover three zone which unfortunately Cancun isn't
