I’m wondering if they were ahead with Freeman since he was the coach and waiting or if Fickell said no. I can’t imagine them wanting Marcus Freeman over Fickell. Take the young rising star at coach who is already plugged in with the staff/system/recruits over some national search that may or may not net you a "higher profile" coach. The only things I can think of are a) Fickell said he wanted to remain with Cincy throughout the playoffs and ND didn't want to wait or b) there's smoke to the Day to Bears rumors and Fickell is waiting on that.
