NFL Schedule Idea

The product keeps getting watered down with injuries to key players. Adding an extra game and no extra rest will only make this worse. I propose the following changes that will keep the NFL calendar the same start and end dates:

(1) Reduce the pre-season by 2 weeks.

(2) Give every team two bye weeks in-season (lengthens regular season by 1 week)

(3) Have a 1 week break after regular season for ALL playoff teams. Expand to 8 teams. Everyone plays a game after off-week.

This will add 2 extra playoff games and remove 32 pre-season games, keep the overall league calendar the same, and give playoff teams 2 extra bye weeks to be healthier for playoff football. It does water down the playoffs, however. An alternative would be to give top seeds 2 weeks off after regular season.

NFL counters: 18 game season, no bye, 16 team playoffs, cocaine gets the marijuana treatment and is no longer punishable on its own. Players celebrate.

Is there statistical information that there are more injuries to key players?

Does the altered IR rules, practice squad usage influence management of injured players?

Do injuries increase as the number of consecutive weeks teams/ players have played?

NFL has been reluctant to start the season  prior to Labor Day.  Not sure how far into February they are wanting g to push things

Makes sense

Does it lessen the benefit of that #1 seed?

Not sure that 2 weeks off would lead to good FB

I like the general idea of 18 games with 2 bye weeks. Everybody getting a week before the playoffs is tough though. You want to reward the top 2 seeds with extra rest, but I'd think most teams would rather go with the one week, as two entire weeks off (3 weeks of not playing football), may actually be detrimental.

I think the NFL should line it up so that the Super Bowl is always on the Sunday before the 3rd Monday of the month (President's Day).

Bring back the 14 game schedule.

16 is divisible by way more

so while 14 is better than 17, 16 is clearly superior.

as is 8 divisions compared to 6.

as is 4 teams per divison compared to either 4 or 5, depending on division

32 teams

16 games

8 divisions

4 conf finalists

2 conferences

1 super bowl winners

it was perfect.

but no, someone wanted a gotdamn prime number of 17 games!
