Week 16- Lions @ Falcons

Good things this game:

Derrick Barnes and Alim McNeill with sacks on Matt Ryan.

ARSB with 90 yards and 1 TD. Very strong player. He's blossoming at the right time.

Our defense continued to make plays all game. Matt Ryan only had 1 late TD. They put alot of pressure on him.

There was only a few plays I did not agree with. The playcalling has really improved each game.

Riley Patterson is our kicker. We need to lock up him, Fox and Daly long term.

Lions rushed for over 100 yards once again.

O-line gave up 0 sacks today and only 2 QB hits. Boyle had a clean pocket the whole game.

This team fights!!

Things to work on:

Backup QB is a need. Boyle played a clean game until the INT at the end, but he's not a NFL QB.

Every penalty we had today was a false start. I think Boyle might have been the responsible party because it was 6 different guys, including him.

We need to get and keep guys healthy.

WR is still a major concern. Falcons locked in on Reynolds and besides ARSB, we had nothing to offer.

Lions have had 7 games this season decided by 4 pts or less. They are 1-5-1 in those 7 games.

This tells me that we're a LOT closer than we should be given the talent level on this roster. I think you have to tip your cap to all of the coaches on staff (not just Campbell). We're able to bring in guys off the street essentially and have them be effective runners. That's 100% on Fraley and Staley doing an incredible job with their guys. The lack of a run game has been the Lions MO for more than a decade. Our DB's have been pulled out of nowhere and been playing at a high level. Another issue the Lions had struggled with for years (outside of Slay). Pleasant has done an incredible job with that group. Glenn has curated a defense that has kept this team in games more often than not despite a struggling offense most of the season.

If we add more talent and continue to develop the young guys, then we should be trending upwards. If you give the Lions half of those losses as W's next year, we're looking at 6-10-1. Minnesota is currently 7-8 and in the hunt for a playoff spot. The division could look very different next year: Aaron Rodgers could force a trade out, Davante Adams might be signed elsewhere, Chicago likely has a new HC while Minnesota could also fire Zimmer.

There is some genuine optimism (and good reason) here despite the losses - the coaching staff seems to be pulling something out of nothing each week and the players fight hard for Campbell. They have all season. It's evident. We have some key guys coming back from injuries. We have a lot of draft capital to work with and Holmes seems to be able to find guys whether they're a 1st round guy (Sewell), a 4th rounder (ARSB) or a UDFA (insert name of several UDFA DB's here). They aren't going to the SB next year but the tools to compete for the division in the next 1-2 years are there.
