Week 17: Broncos @ Chargers game thread

The Chargers are a young team led by a young coach, it’s why they’ve been as up and down as they are; this week’s loss to Houston (Houston!!) being example 1A.

That said, they have something to play for and we do not. They are better at QB and better at HC. They are playing at “home.” Both of us are coming off losses in games we should have/could have won.

Truthfully, I see something of a shootout this week. Just a gut feeling.

The Chargers have a big problem with their run D - they have zero push inside at the DT position.   If there’s a D that could make a leap to near elite status with 1 guy it might be LAC & Jordan Davis Rd1 next year.

Why do I mention this?  Because HC Staley overcame this problem by having 8-in-the-box at the highest rate for any team after the bye week.   After being bottom 5 pre-bye.  It’s made quite the difference.     Vs. Houston though it didn’t work with Joey Bosa, Drue Tranquill, CB Davis & S Derwin James out.   Basically lost their best 4 guys and the 4 subs with injuries were just horrible.

To be clear this isn’t to say injuries excuse the L.   But stuff like that combined with a bad day by QB (usually leafing to a 2+ TO margin for the dog), are how TEN loses to NYJ, BUF loses to JAX (3 starters on OL out), ARI loses to DET.   And now LAC to HOU.   But it doesn’t necessarily translate to the next week so we’ll see who they get back (likely all the guys who missed the last game, except Mike Williams, who's unvaxxed so 10 days means Week 17 is out too).    Our run game vs their run D will be pivotal but they will be fielding a S unit that is nothing like what played in Houston yesterday.

With the new Covid protocols, the Chargers are going to get a bunch of players who tested positive on Monday (including CB Michael Davis, CHJ and G Osemele) back on Sunday.    They also get Mike Williams back even though he's unvaxxed, with the 5-day return instead of the 10-day return.   A huge guy returning besides Bosa/Derwin James (both missed last week) is NT Justin Jones ( @Xenos mentioned this, full credit to him):

For anyone who tests positive today, though - the 5-day window puts them out until Monday, unless they test negative in 4 days or less from symptoms / positive test while asymptomatic (which only 1 person has done that so far - TJ Watt).

Why do I raise that last line?  Because it sounds like we're about to be hit with a small (or large) wave.   Patrick's the first, but apparently there may be more coming.

I just don't want our young core to get hurt (Darby getting 2nd concussion in his career last week hurts), a L helps us with better draft capital for our trade talks with A-Rod/Wilson, never want us to tank, but a L is better for us in the long run.   So assuming everyone is OK and it's not serious, then just take it as it comes.

How the eff did we lose to Houston? This was the first time I was super disappointed in Staley as HC.

Your Forums' a ghost town.  Bring your fellow Chargers posters in on GD, we'll make it a party.     If TEN & LAR win in the 1 PM games, you'll be playing for a control-your-destiny game.

Right on cue, the Covid positives start coming in - and again, they're likely not back until Monday.

Darby's also had a concussion and missed time in 2016, so counting on him to return is iffy (and frankly in a lost season, take your time, Ronald - we need you next year, not this one; same goes for TeddyB, but he's not likely back with us, more for him).

FWIW Fangio is great at maxxing out our D output even when we lose guys, but no Patrick/Anderson, and likely more to come - this could get ugly.   At the very least we know the Chargers won't be looking past us after last game.

I’ll be in this thread as well as GD. I think the others are mostly in GD. I’m pretty sure we all expect the worse to happen these days. Even when we get the anti Lynn as HC, things still blow up in our face. But at least we hadn’t had the blown leads like we did with Lynn, McCoy, and Norv yet.

As for our subforum being a ghost town, makes sense given the LA move. Though the constant losing without any ring to show for it during the 2004-2009 run probably pushed a lot of people away.

In any division game, nothing's a given.   I mean, last game with us should have driven the point home in spades.   But unlike Lynn, Staley has been a great HC.   Bad games happen, even with poor prep being part of the reason.  I loved how Staley took ALL of the responsibility after last week's debacle with HOU.   That's a refreshing change from Fangio's post-game pressers this year.

No outcome is for certain, but I have zero doubt LAC won't be up and ready, and they won't be anything but well coached.   Staley's really impressed in year 1.  Staley + Herbert is a pretty daunting combo to face.   We DEN fans hope we can get a HC+QB combo to match Reid-Mahomes and Staley-Herbert next year.  So, do your part for us and make sure to take care of this game, and improve our draft ammo to get the QB we need (we'll be going all out so it's up to your boys).

Thanks! I would love for us to get into the postseason just because I feel we have a chance to do some damage depending on matchups. But what most Chargers fan forget is that we definitely overachieved under Staley this year even if we don’t make the postseason. Obviously it would be nice not to end the season on a three or four game losing streak.

We might not have a RT this Sunday 😔

The protocol starts the day after the test sample is drawn - Pipkins was placed on protocol yesterday, but the test may have been Monday.  But even if the test was yesterday, Wed-Sun is 5 days.  And they do allow players to clear on Sunday AM (but have to be activated on Saturday). So if Pipkins is asymptomatic / symptoms resolve, he'd be Day 5 on Sunday, and clear.    Norton & Murray and any player placed on protocol today, if that's the date the sample was drawn, are out until Monday.

Bad news likely coming.   5 more players about to be added apparently. Practice closed.   The 5-day window means all the players yesterday & moving forward are out unless they are vaxxed and test negative (and only TJ Watt did that in 4 days).

Well it’s official - Massie is one ot those 5 being added today. Fleming starts at RT.   Vs. Bosa.

Weatherley is the 2nd apparently. That means the OL DL & WR corps are all affected and team had indoor meetings / practice Tuesday & yesterday.

Wow.

Time to embrace the suck. Denver wll probably win because they always find a way to win meaningless games, but the reality right now, once again, is that we should be thinking about draft position in a year where may either a) use assets to trade for a QB, or b) draft a QB.

Reality is, we're not good. Team now hit by COVID. Chargers have a lot to play for and I think the air came out of the sails after last week.
