Scenario: An AFC team not in the West Division relocates to Portland, and must be moved into the West

So, say a team in the AFC East, North, or South relocates to Portland. This would require their move into the AFC West, which means the Chiefs must be removed from that division.

What other teams in the AFC would change divisions?

Yea, depends on what team is moving to Portland and what slot we need to fill.

Team in East moves to Portland:
Baltimore to AFC East, KC to AFC North
OR Indy to AFC North, Baltimore to AFC East, KC to AFC South

Team in South moves to Portland:
KC to AFC South
OR Baltimore to AFC South, KC to AFC North
OR Miami to AFC South, Baltimore to AFC East, KC to AFC North

Team in North moves to Portland:
KC to AFC North
OR Indy to AFC North, KC to AFC South

Edits: more scenarios

This^^

I mapped out the exact same, although I feel strongly that the Miami -> South option is much better of your two scenarios

One way or another KC would have to go to the North

But if I'm allowed to blow up both conferences, I can do a lot better, tbh

Rivalries between teams are more important than geography when setting divisions. There’s know way you’re splitting up the Ravens/Steelers or Jets/Dolphins.

IMO:

South team moves to Portland - Straight swap the Chiefs to the South

North team moves to Portland - Straight swap the Chiefs to the North

East team moves to Portland - Bengals to the East, Chiefs to the North

I say 32 1-team divisions.

Division Championship banners for all!

Add 4 teams, put 18 in the top tier league.. 18 in the bottom tier league

promotion and relegation

top league gets the Super Bowl, 2nd tier gets like.. the less super Bowl

One strong possibility for an AFC team relocating to Portland is the Bills.

They have had a hard time getting a replacement stadium built in the Buffalo area.

If the Bills were to move to Portland and the AFC West, the Chiefs would slide over to the North, and the Ravens to the East

if it's the Bills then you need to do a full reshuffle of the AFC

The Colts would be the most likely candidates to move to the East, since that's where they were to begin with (plus Indianapolis is further north than Cincinnati), and KC would take their place in the South.

If you guys think this one is tricky, what on earth happens when Shahid Khan inevitably moves the Jaguars to London?

Ideally you’d just swap them with the Dolphins or Cowboys but both of those teams have historic division rivalries that you don’t want to split up.

No, Chiefs go AFC South. Put Jags or Colts in AFC East. I think Indy KC would be a good rivalry though, so maybe Titans go East, but likely the Colts due to history. KC Vs Tenn/Hous isn’t terrible. Jacksonville is a dud for KC.
