General Draft Discussion

I thought it might be a good idea to make a thread for more general draft pick discussion. This can go along with @armsteeldthread which is more in depth. Any prospects you like? Any questions you may have? What will the FO be looking at in terms of prospects or positions? Keep all draft discussion here and use the other topic for more in depth, film study of the prospects.

I'll get the ball rolling. Do you all think we might be looking for D-line in this draft? If so, will we prioritize 5 tech DEs or NTs? Do you think we look for a more versatile piece? I have really been digging some of the big EDGE guys. There are a lot of them. Logan Hall from Houston and Travon Walker from UGA are two that have caught my eye. Both 6'4+ 275+ with long arms. Could they fill in for Tuitt's spot as an interior pass rusher? Will we be looking toward prospects like that?

If they lose Tuitt, they’ll add another DE in FA or the draft...Cam is 33 and Wormley is a FA after 2022 and Loudermilk is still a work in progress....if he comes back, I think they’ll hold off on DE til 2023.

Even if Alualu come back healthy,IIRC he’s 34 and going into last year of deal. I’d try to resign Adams...either way I’d try to line up his replacement this year.

I agree for the most part. If Tuitt comes back, we still need depth. If he doesn't, we still need depth. I think Loudermilk might take a step next year. I question his ceiling, but I think he can still improve a decent amount.

If Tuitt comes back, they’re 4 deep at DE...not really any room to add somebody(maybe a mid rounder at best) especially with the massive holes at OL/secondary and secondary needs like Nose/WR/ILB/RB2.

I could be wrong...just my .02

@MOSteelers56We already have Tyitt's replacement but he's playing out of position. I think Montravious Adams is a 5Tech. He has the ability to rush the passer inside in sub but I think he'd do even better on the edge. Alualu and the twins can battle it out inside and I'd want them to draft a NT/DT.

Regarding CBs, I know Coach Tomlin favors the 6' and taller guys but a guy I really like is ASU CB Jack Jones. Super fast and twitchy. Plays the ball well. Not afraid to tackle despite barely weighing around 170lbs.

Adams is an intriguing choice for a DE. I assumed he was pretty short, but I looked him up and he's listed at 6'4. Not the longest arms in the world. I think Adams future lies as a pass rushing, disruptive, 3-tech. Which is something Tuitt did well. I think we might still be in the market for a 5-tech. Maybe not in this offseason, but soon. Loudermilk and Wormely as the starting 5-techs doesn't leave me feeling too comfortable with the position. They both seem like good second starters, or backups. Probably never elite guys. More like Brett Keisel than Aaron Smith.

I'll look into that Jack Jones guy. CB is a hard eval for me.

Regarding evals, I look for movement skills, stiffness, change of direction, playing under control, situational awareness, desire & ability to get off blocks, tackling, ability to play the ball in the air, aggressiveness (does he go for the catch or go for securing the tackle), explosiveness to plays in front of him, long speed, quickness, ability to mirror, etc..

If big ole J.Davis is there at 20. I take him.
If D.Wyatt is there after picking an OL in RD 1, I take him.

I haven't seen Travis Jones enough to have a strong opinion,
but he's a big fella. P.Winfrey has the right size for an athletic 5-tech,
but I've heard his motor is often questioned.

In later rounds, I do like the big fella from Arkansas J.RIdgeway
as one of those 'country strong' types at 6'6 320 and I like
E.Uwazuirke from Iowa State, who is also around 6'6 320.

PJ Mustipher is a big fella from Penn State who was injured midway
through last season, but he can play and is a 6'4 330 type.

How’s the Safety class look?

With Edmunds a FA(and I’m guessing they’ll resign him), I was wondering how the class looked as whole...I’m only aware of Kyle Hamilton.

Smoke Monday-6'3 200lb tackling machine. Very physical and will lay the lumber. Good vs TEs but can also play Single High.

Jaquan Brisker-6'1 215 big physical Safety who is good at Single Hugh but is also a solid tackler. Reminds me of Terrell Edmunds.

Dax Hill-Coach Tomlin's type of guy. Excellent Slot defender. Very explosive. Loves to dish out punishment. Ran a laser timed 4.3 in high school. Younger brother of Justice Hill. I'd have no issues with Dax being picked at 20.

Quentin Lake- Son of Steelers great Carnell Lake.6'1 201lb is a smooth player who always looks under control. He can do everything, even play CB, but he doesn't stand out in anything. He's a plug and play type guy that gives his all. Good athlete.

Yusuf Corker-solid tackler. Loves the big hit. High energy player. Comes downhill like a missile but is also good in coverage. Reminds me of Mike Mitchell.

Isaiah Pola Mao-lanky defender who is a good athlete. Moves well for a taller defender. Playmaker. Attacks downhill and is a solid tackler. Nephew of Steelers legend Troy Polamalu.

Jalen Pitre-Intermediate defender who excels within 15 yards from the LoS. Slot defender/Safety who is an intimidating presence. I'm not sold on him as a deep defender but he's a force ala Jamal Adams.

There are other solid guys who are more specialists in my opinion. There are some blazers also. JT Woods should be one of the fastest Safety in this class.

As usual, it's all about what role you want them to play. I like this class. My favorite are Dax Hill and Smoke Monday.

I  want focus on the OLine...if Tyler , cross, or green are selected before 20 then I want to trade down ...but now I'm hearing things about the DLine and tuit not returning...so what if Jordan Davis is left? I prefer Leal but I think he will go before Davis ...which sends up red flags for me. If Davis is left...I still want to trade down to get more picks so we can focus on both lines plus the secondary.

If you feel Davis can be a pass rush threat, he’s worth a 1st.

If you feel he’s only a 2 down run stuffer, I wouldn’t take him til the 2nd.
