2022 MOCK OFF-SEASON V1

This is my optimistic 2022 Off-Season. I was hurt like everyone when the season ended the way it did, and I thought to myself, just trade Rodgers away. That way I do not have too high of expectations. Then after about a week, I started to feel different with the reports on Rodgers staying and having conversations, along with MLF saying he and the front office have a plan to keep as much of the team together.

My numbers/data will come from OTC Calculator. As we know, these are rough numbers.

So here is my optimistic Off-Season:

Aaron Rodgers returns to the Packers.

ccc1ffd7d2d44b29b5dde356c77d45aa.jpg

Aaron Rodgers signs a 3 year extension that saves $20mil off of the cap.

We all know that is the first domino that needs to fall. He feels truly wanted and likes the new relationship he has with Gutey. Also he looks around the league and sees that this is the best place for him.

Current 2022 Cap: -$50.4 million

Aaron Rodgers' new deal now places Cap at -$30.4 million

Let us get under the Cap.

Releases:

Zadarius Smith: $15.4 mil saved

Dean Lowery: $4.1 mil saved

Current Cap: -$10.6 million

Restructures:

David Bakhtiari: Saves $8.1 mil

Kenny Clark: Saves $9.1 mil

Yes, I know that they restructured last year and it's pushing even more cash into the future. They are key cogs to the team and the 2023 Cap is going to go up significantly. They will be given new deals then. Those are the easiest ways to cut the Cap.

Aaron Jones: Saves $4.1 mil

Current Cap: $10.7 million

Extensions:

Preston Smith: 2yr extension. Saves $7 mil

Adrian Amos: 2yr extension. Saves $3.5 mil

Billy Turner: 2yr extension. Saves $4 mil

Randall Cobb: 1yr extension. (No new money, just spreads out remainder of what he is owed) Saves $5mil

Mason Crosby: 1yr extension. Saves $1.5 mil

Jaire Alexander: 4yr extension. Saves $6 mil

Current Cap: $37.7 million

Re-Signs:

Davante Adams: 3yr $75 mil.  Cap Hit: $12 mil (Rodgers persuades Davante into a minor hometown discount)

Rasual Douglas: 2yr $10 mil. Cap Hit: $3.5 mil

Allen Lazard: 3yr $12 mil. Cap Hit of $3 mil (The team skips his RFA Tag and lowers the overall Cap Hit by doing a true extension)

Corey Bojorquez: 1yr vet minimum. Cap hit $895k

Marquez Valdes-Scantling: 1yr $1.5. Cap hit $1.5 mil (Prove It)

All of the ERFA are brought back (except Randy Ramsey). Cap Hit: $6.2 mil

Current Cap: $10.6

Not Re-signed:

De'Vondre Campbell: Takes his All-Pro season and cashes in.

Lucas Patrick, Dennis Kelley, Tyler Lancaster, EQS, Oren Burks: All replaceable.

Robert Toynen: Takes a bigger offer from another team.

Chandon Sullivan is let walk, becuase of Rasual Douglas.

Outside Free-Agents:

Kwon Alexander: 1yr $2 mil. Cap Hit $2 mil. Veteran presence and coverage ability.

Current Cap: $8.6 million

That leaves $6 million to sign draft picks and $2.6 to play with during the season (and will increase as we make cuts for the final roster).

2022 NFL Draft:

I will not be making any trades.

1: Jermaine Johnson II: Edge, Florida State.

2: Jeremy Ruckert: TE, Ohio State.

I know that it is early and that my draft picks will adjust in status and may not be where I picked. I feel this would keep Green Bay in it's Super Bowl window.

I think the team needs freshening up more than that - also concerned it looks an old team.  Lots of guys on  expensive 3rd contracts, old and more injury prone. Personally even with Rodgers would prefer if Adams got his money elsewhere and Rodgers spread it round which he is very good at when he tries to instead of locking in one guy.

I would start again at ST. No scapegoats or working out who's fault it is - collective blame. Needs more than replacing the ST Co-ordinator. Would replace all staff in that area. Crosby, Punter, LS all to go.  Completely new room. Leave no trace.

I like it. As you stated, a bit early on the process to know where draft values will lie, but I like the idea of adding to the pass rush early. Can really take this defense from good to elite.

Also love the TE pick, that dude might rocket up draft boards but for now that's a good space to snag him.

I'd be pleased with this offseason

Kinda of like most of it.

Don't like getting rid of Lowry, he has been above a JAG for the last two seasons. Without him we are woefully weak at DL. If we are keeping P.Smith I would take a DL instead of a Edge in the 1st. Also I feel we need to address WR sooner, ideally a magic second rounder!

I really like the mock attempt but have a few comments:
1) I think we usually carry more than $2.6m into next year (I think we usually carry over $5m), so that might negate your Kwon Alexander signing.

2) Regarding keeping Crosby, I just read that we protected and kicker on the practice squad all year, so I'm assuming that Crosby is gone.

3) I think your re-sign deals are a little optimistic. I think MVS gets a lot more than a prove it deal, same with Rasul.

4) I love the draft. Jermaine Johnson looks to be tearing it up at the Senior Bowl, Ruckert is apparently surprising people with is athletic ability as well as run blocking. Raimann looks like an ideal development piece mid round. The only thing it's missing is DLine, but you only have so many draft picks, so I get it.

One side note, can anyone explain how you guys attach pictures in your mocks? Whenever I add them they're always a bunch of different sizes and it looks dumb.

My mock may be more wishful thinking then optomistic, but it makes it fun. For if Rodgers does come back, the front office has a lot of work to do. If Rodgers wants to go, the work is very easy, a lot of people are getting cut.

Crosby will be brought back, he's one of Rodgers' guys. And I feel that Rodgers will be deployed by the team to talk others into taking smaller deals to keep it all together.

Jermaine Johnson is my top draft crush right now.

I might be the only one here but I'd keep Z over Preston Smith. Preston has a good year every other year. I think you can get Z cheaper on an extension as well since he missed basically the whole year.

You can't cut Lowry and not go D-line early. We don't have the bodies to play without him.

I don't dislike it.

I think I would let both Smiths walk and save more money.  See if I can get Mercilus back for a lot less money than either of the Smiths.  Perhaps that gives enough money for retaining Campbell.  Adding an early edge player to Gary, Mercilus, and the holdovers from this season is probably still an adequate unit.

I will echo the Dean Lowry opinions as well.  And double down with not drafting any DL is tough to see.

Letting Patrick, Sullivan, and Tonyan walk is probably a good idea.
