Justin Jefferson: Keep getting better in Year 3!

Jefferson: “I’m excited, honestly. I’m excited for him (K/O). I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about him. Just like you said, watching Cooper Kupp this whole season, he’s been killing it. He’s been wide open pretty much every single play. I’m excited for it. This’ll be my first coach on the offensive side. I’m excited.

I think that now it’s becoming year three and I did the things I had done in my first two seasons, I feel like this is the year I become more of a leader. More of a captain of the team. Just being more vocal. The first two seasons, you’re new to the building, you’re the rookie, you’re the new guy. A lot of people don’t really, I guess not technically listen to you.”

In just two seasons, Justin Jefferson has already emerged as one of the best receivers in the league. After recording 88 catches for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns as a rookie, he had 108 catches for 1,616 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2021. His 14.3 yards per touch led the league.

Wes Phillips: “Certainly one of, if not the best receiver in the league. Extremely talented, extremely competitive, can win from aligned outside, aligned inside — really, anywhere on the field. Has speed, can transition. Just can’t say enough about him. Really excited to work with him.”

Tyreek Hill isn’t the only happy wide receiver in the NFL today. His new deal helps many top receivers across the league. None more so than Minnesota Vikings’ Justin Jefferson, who will be eligible for his first NFL contract extension next offseason. JJ is probably foaming at the mouth, knowing he could be the WR who resets the market this time next year.

In fact, should Jefferson have another huge season, and with O’Connell running the offense there’s no reason to believe he won’t, I’d expect him to demand a new deal by this time next year or threaten to holdout. Wouldn’t you? He’s scheduled to make just $1.8 million in cash during the 2023 season.

A freshly signed contract next offseason wouldn’t kick in until 2024, meaning Kwesi & Co would have plenty of time to prepare for such a large cap hit. It’s not by coincidence that Kirk Cousins’ new extension is scheduled to come off the books that same season.

I don't know that I see JJ holding out. That just doesn't seem to be in his nature. Plus the last CBA pretty much neutered holding out as an effective negotiation tactic. That said, pay the man and pay him soon.

The second season of Justin Jefferson’s career was certainly a terrific follow-up to his record-breaking rookie campaign. Because of that, he’s become a favorite receiver to put at the top of multiple rankings. He recorded the second-most receiving yards, 1616, and the sophomore was one of just six players to record 1000+ receiving yards and 10+ receiving TDs. Pretty impressive numbers for the Vikings wide receiver in just his second NFL season, and it seems extremely plausible that he could continue to progress even further.

Even if Jefferson is just comparable to his 2021 season, he could surpass Stefon Diggs’ career receiving total over his Vikings tenure. Currently, Jefferson has the 18th-most receiving yards in Vikings history; 1607 yards behind Diggs who is ninth. It’d take another massive season from Jefferson; in fact, a season that would rank 22nd all-time in terms of single season receiving yards. As audacious as that is for many receivers, Jefferson is simply good enough to put that type of effort forward.

The fact that Justin Jefferson will even threaten Stefon Diggs’ career totals in year three is incredible. Remember that before being traded, Diggs spent five seasons in Purple and Gold. He played 70 regular season games and started 63. Assuming Jefferson starts all 17 games in 2022, he will finish the 2022 regular season with 50 games played and 48 starts.

It will take until at least Week 3 of the 2024 season for Jefferson to reach his 70th regular season game played with the Vikings, and by that point he projects to blow past Diggs production if he just keeps the same pace that he’s set over his first two NFL seasons.

I agree and it’s going to be a huge deal, I am sure it will top Hill’s deal.

We'll have to see if they'll even be able to come to an agreement next offseason, or if it'll take until before the 5th year option season (which is certainly guaranteed to be picked up).

Can they extend him next offseason and pick up the option? I’m wondering because I think it would be good if they could give him a huge signing bonus to split up over the deal, pay him what he’d make under the FYO, then start the big salaries after that when they are presumably out from under the other big contracts.

That I'm not sure of.

Vikings essentially have 2-years of team control after this season (4th year - 2023, and the 5th year option - 2024). The previous FO typically didn't like doling out extensions with more than 1-year left on them IIRC. I believe there were a few exceptions these last few years?

We'll see how the new FO operates as Jefferson is extension eligible after this upcoming season. He is without a doubt the top priority for the Vikings and I would expect an extension is worked out. How that impacts the 5th year, I don't know.

Given what Cooper Kupp did in this offense I think Jefferson has a strong chance to be the 1st ever WR to eclipse 2,000 yards in a season.

a 1000 yard receiving season from Jefferson would move him in our team rankings from 18th to 11th, passing:

Chuck Foreman
Gene Washington
Bill Brown
Paul Flatley
John Gilliam
Percy Harvin
Hassan Jones

a 1500 yard season only pushes him up one additional rank, passing Kyle Rudolph, and putting him 107 total yards behind DIggs.

after Diggs, comes:

Ahmad Rashad (5418)
Adam Thielen (5966)
Steve Jordan (6307)
Sammy White (6400)
Jake Reed (6433)
Anthony Carter (7636)
Randy Moss (9316)
Cris Carter (12,383)

https://www.statista.com/statistics/811318/minnesota-vikings-career-receiving-yards-leaders/#:~:text=Cris Carter is the career,Minnesota Vikings with 12%2C383 yards.

I believe that if they agree to an extension prior to the 5th year option deadline, then he wouldn't have to fulfill that season and the extension would automatically kick in in 2024, but if they can't come to an agreement until after that, then the extension wouldn't kick in until 2025.  At least, that's the only way that would make sense to me.
