So we were all wrong about Zac Taylor?

2 years ago, everyone thought Taylor was a bum. 1 year ago, most people were still confident that Taylor was a bum. Now he's in the Super Bowl with Burrow, Chase, Mixon, Higgins, Boyd, Uzomah, a solid defense, and the best kicker this side of Justin Tucker.

So - are we all idiots? Did Taylor just get a lot better as a coach? Or does he still suck?

Further, is the Bengals' success down to:

A) the players, and by extension the front office for acquiring such talent?
B) Zac Taylor, his coaching, his scheme, his staff, and the way he uses his players?
C) an unquantifiable, unknowable mix of the two?

Speaking of Zac Taylor, where do you rank him among NFL head coaches right now and how will his placement change depending on whether he wins or loses the Super Bowl?

C - this has to be the most improbable Super Bowl run of all time, or at least that I can remember.

Gonna take more time to really know, IMO.

They look good on the field, and they have a very solid roster. Credit there all around.

He also found a way to stifle the Chiefs, who are the closest thing to a dominant team the AFC. Credit there.

But 2021 was weird all around.

The AFCN was a mess of injuries, giving Cincy a window that wasn't previously wide open.

The AFC as a whole seemed down this year. Buffalo wasn't the juggernaut a lot expected. Kansas City wasn't infallible. Henry missed a chunk for Tennessee.

Any given Sunday, but the Bengals played the Raiders and a not-so-great Titans team to get to the AFCCG, where they beat a good but not dominant KC.

The Rams, for the NFC, are good. They've had a lot of buzz. But even they've been far from a juggernaut.

Again, nothing against Zac. He won. He did his job. There's a lot to like. But I'd be wary of using 2021's success as a firm gauge on him. He could be the new hot commodity, he could fizzle out like Doug Peterson did in Philly. It's just too early to tell, and I don't want to say Cincinnati just got lucky, but they had a few things lean in their favor that went beyond the playing field.

This is a rather lucky run for the Bengals. They could have very plausibly lost each game they were in (Conversely the Rams have made it despite some net poor luck I'd argue). Half of their success is letting Burrow go full Peyton Manning on offense. The other half is arguably their defense playing very well (Taylor not being a defensive coach).

I say this not to discredit the Bengals but to make sure we're not overreacting to a good month stretch in terms of evaluating the overall roster and coaching.

This is why you never listen to football fans, anything posted on media is just reactionary opinion.  I forget what game it was this year but about more than half the media was saying that he should have been fired on the spot for a 4th down call.  I think it was against the 9ers, there was also a longer thread in here about it.

Maybe it should be a hot take but Coaches should be able to see year 4 unless they are horribly bad and are named Urban Myer.  If a head coach only wins 3-4 games in the first two years but are somewhat competitive, margin of loss <10, they should see year 3.  For some reason every fan thinks that they should have Belichek/Reid and Brady/Mahomes/Allen.

He picked up a team that had no talent 2 years ago and slowly put it all together. They're one of the least penalized teams so that's a sign of good coaching. People are too quick to judgment on new coaches and Taylor is a perfect example as to why you give them the time and don't jump to conclusions.

Hes turned a losing franchise into one that should be competitive for years to come.

His biggest credit is building a new team culture, and most importantly giving Burrow the keys. There’s still a lot of iffy decisions though. The first down runs against the Chiefs were ridiculous. If he’s going to beat the Rams, he also needs to coach less conservatively.

Well, two years ago he was a bum, so was anyone wrong ???  No. Things change, Taylor learned and it shows...NOW.

Really hate these reactionary posts who just want to TRY and create controversy, saying they were right and everyone else is wrong, very childish imo.  Time can change perspective

What if the super bowl is 40-10.. Still not a failure. There’s something special brewing in cincy.
