Dome
Quote After a year back in the college ranks, Doug Marrone has landed a new NFL gig. He is set to join Dennis Allen‘s Saints staff, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. It is unclear if Marrone is being considered for the Saints’ OC job. Carmichael has held that position for the past 13 years, but NOLA.com’s. Carmichael is on track to stay on under Allen, but in a different role. Carmichael requested the change, per Duncan. New Orleans would not be permitted to name Marrone OC without complying with the Rooney Rule first, however. OC interviews should be expected in the near future. Post-Payton, New Orleans’ OC role will take on greater importance due to Allen’s status as a defensive-minded coach. The Saints’ next OC will be in line to call plays. LINK It's been rumored for years that Carmichael has been trying to slowly step away from football, this confirms it. I'm surprised he didn't retire with Payton. I bet he sticks around one more season. I would think as a passing game coordinator or something similar. I'm sure Marrone will be named the OC.
Dome
I think this is probably a sign that the Saints aren't going to blow it up this year, and will keep rolling the cap back. Carmicael is very familiar with Allen at this point and probably would've asked which way he was going with this roster before deciding if he was going to stay. I can't imagine Carmichael would want to stick around for a rebuild. The defense can keep the Saints in any game, Kamara and Thomas are both great options for inexperienced QBs to get rid of the ball fast, and the OL has nothing but All-Pros and 1st rounders. They struggled this year trying to hold blocks longer than they were used to, but the lack of continuity was also killing them. Saints will be a defense oriented team that plays small-ball on offense. They should give lots of teams fits next year.

As we've discussed a bit (and yes, I've been very hard on the Saints O-line) how long can you hold blocks when you don't have receivers who can get open, ultimately leading to a dump-off pass or a QB scramble (which is - in part - why Winston got hurt)? If you're not a Saints fan, I challenge you to name any Saints receiver or TE not named Michael Thomas. Maybe Marrone can help with this situation. O-line is his specialty. Now the Saints need more receiving talent. Anywho, glad to see Marrone back in the mix. Is Flores looking for an OC position, by chance?

And it's not like we didn't know that the availability of Thomas was always going to make or break this WR corps. Thomas frees up a lot, he dominates those short and intermediate routes that affect the linebackers, the linebackers that normally would blow up Harris on his short crossing route or be all over Kamara coming out of the backfield but now have to decide how long to hesitate in MTs zone before bee lining for the other two guys on the team you really don't want to get the ball. We definitely need to find a WR2 because Trequan Smith has had all the chances in the world and hasn't capitalized on any of them, you can cover him with any player you trot out on defense. A decent pass catching TE too, Trautman is a good blocker, hes basically a Josh Hill clone. I wonder what Ben Watson is doing... More RB depth as well but thats not hard to find in the offseason for not much more than vet minimum. I think Payton got too focused on physical attributes sometimes when looking for his skill players, guys who can fill specific roles. So we have a lot of guys that could be something really unique and useful to the offense, but it only works if the whole system is operating the way it is supposed to. Juwan Johnson, Deonte Harris, Taysom Hill are those guys currently. I don't think it's necessarily something we need to spend a ton of capital on. We don't need stars, we have that at WR, HB, and along the OL, but we need versatility and reliability. Additionally, I hope Allen puts Taysom at ST and back up RB/FB/TE full time. He could make a pro bowl on ST if he played closer to 100% of ST snaps and stay healthy. It's what he was born for. Then I could call him Pro Bowl QB Taysom Hill forever.

Maybe Marrone's unspecified offensive role is pleasing Carmichael's wife while Carmichael runs the teams offense

Don’t make him a cuck as well.
