NFL/XFL Partnership announced

The NFL and XFL announced a partnership on Monday in which the two leagues will collaborate on innovation programs involving rules changes, equipment developments and health and safety initiatives, per an NFL press release.

So… this is pretty significant, right? At least for the XFL?

WOOT! (For those not in the know, that thing in the picture is a beer snake. XFL fans knew how to party.)

Before anyone scoffs at this, the XFL made simple changes to the game that fans had always been calling for: a shorter play clock, fewer commercials, reviewing plays via skycam, competent officiating. In a nutshell, the average XFL game was both more exciting and less dangerous than the average NFL game--even though it lasted five weeks.

In my view this news is both good and potentially important.

Only significant for the XFL if the NFL provides additional financial security. More significant for NFL. Now they can say they co-developed changes that move the game/player safety forward instead of just stealing ideas after the NCAA or XFL figures it out first.

The main significance that I see is international development. More guys like Mailata/Faalele/Etc should emerge, and hopefully these raw athletic gems just start popping up from every corner of the earth.

It was doing really well before COVID hit. It could have survived this time around if not for that.

Does the XFL still exist? Is this version III or the version II that did not pay its coaches and players?

Or was that the AAFL? Or AFFL or FALAFL?  Too many FLs these days.

There seem to be more of them than names for that team in DC.

This is version 2 but the Rock bought it, so its the same league but completely different owner/management.

Really wish the Alliance of American Football would have worked with Bill Polian.  Not sure why they do not try and start that up instead of teaming with the XFL but at least it is something.  Still not a fan of the leadership in the XFL.

1.  NBC already has a deal with WWE and the built in audience with the Rock so there's a higher chance of eyeballs hear

2.  Despite the first XFL being a complete Flop.  The second one actually was doing OK before COVID killed the hell out of it

So, if I’m reading this right the XFL is going to become an experimental quasi-minor league?

I don’t think it’s a minor league - NFL already has a free farm system, the NCAA.

I see this as a testing ground for experimental rules and game modifications. At most, I expect the XFL to turn into the equivalent of High A/Winter Ball is to MLB - guys from overseas who don’t have any tangible experience in football, but look and feel like somebody who can develop. NFL keeps tabs, then maybe leverages the Supplemental Draft format to bring guys up (reverse auction/bidding format).

I could see the XFL looking into the NCAA transfer portal as a source of talent. Collegiate players leaving their original school aren’t doing so for grades or majors - why not offer up a hefty paycheck to a guy like Spencer Rattler or Caleb Williams? As far as I know, there is no three year out of HS rule in the XFL. Let’s not beat around the bush anymore, these high caliber QBs aren’t going to college for an education, they’re doing it to showcase their talents for the NFL. Why not do it for a pro league, for a pro salary?

Personally I am hoping it becomes a ref training ground.
