2022 Chargers = 2017 Eagles/2021 Bengals?

biggie.

Chargers have some big pieces in place already. Franchise QB? Check. Solid offensive line? Check. Weapons? Check. Their main problem has been defense. HOWEVER, they have a TON of cap space and an entire draft/offseason to fully dedicate to loading up the defense.

With that in mind, is it possible the Chargers surprise everyone and make a run to the SB and Herbert Hype becomes a thing?

Herbert is 100% good enough to string together a monster playoff stretch to get them to the super bowl, and I think the rest of the roster is pretty good. They wil have things to fix....they'll need another corner or two (depending on who they re-sign), and they need a receiver. Also, not letting Rex Burkhead stomp all over them would be a nice start, so maybe fix that run defense.

But with a couple of nice additions, this could easily be a force.

I don't think there is any doubt the Chargers have the talent to be a competitive team that could make a deep playoff run.

I think the harder issue for them is that they finished third place in the division during Mahomes "down year".

If Mahomes reverts towards his career mean, it might not matter how talented the Chargers are.

All they have to do is make the dance. After that, you just never know. A bad half was basically all it took to sink KC this year in the playoffs. Even if the Chiefs are super good...on the surface looking at competition of NE, LV, Indy (??? I guess...someone has to finish second in the south) and whomever doesn't win the north, I still really like the Chargers chances to at least get to the playoffs.

The fact that Herbert has the stats he does throughout his first two seasons, yet has never played in a playoff game is mind boggling to me.

I would especially not want to play them as KC because they always play us SUPER tough.

Herbert is pretty good.

But let's remember that Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees each only ever made one Super Bowl.

And Herbert isn't on that level. I'd love to see him play in a payoff game before people saying he's good enough to lead them there.

The AFCW plays the NFCW. They also play the Titans, Colts and Browns.

Nick Foles. Joe Flacco. Colin Kaepernick. Brad Johnson.

There's some randomness built in. I'm not concerned about him being good enough to get there.

The AFC gauntlet is ridiculous. Add in all the rumors of Denver getting a QB and it just makes it that much harder. But you are right, the core pieces are there for the Chargers.

I never knew you felt that strongly about Jimmy G being a good QB

Not the Californian I was thinking about tbh

But even Jimmy might be enough to spark them into something playoff caliber.

The Chargers issues always seem to stem from poor top-down leadership, starting with Spanos.    So many years that team had talent and they never did much.    Here we are in that situation again....only now in a tougher AFC West and tougher AFC in general.

Obviously Herbert is good enough.    QB hasnt been the issue in that organization for nearly 20 years now.
