What really caused the decline of the Greatest Show on Turf?

Firstly Mike Martz. A bad football coach, or a bad head coach at least.

If you watch the superbowl vs the titans you see that the offense is vulnerable to a good pass rush. Martz wouldn't adapt. Also they didnt prioritize protecting the ball, philosophically this led to Warner throwing a ton of ints. They wanted more of what they did well rather than grow as an offense.they also wasted a draft pick on trung candidate, they spent on luxury rather than build their lines or defensive core.

They were not able to keep their defense together which was good in 1999.

But Martz was heralded as a whiz, the smartest coach of all time....he was hyped the week of the SB as better than Vermeil and on the track to Canton.....

Was it really Super Bowl 36's loss, because they could have gone back to the Super Bowl in 2003-04....the Rams were loaded in 2003 and got upset by the Carolina Panthers at home....was it Coach Mike Martz, Marshall Faulk's decline or the demise of Kurt Warner's stardom from 1999-01?

Their 2003 squad wasn't that good despite the 12-4 record. The offense was still solid, but a far cry from the 1999 to 2001 efficiency. Bulger was a decent quarterback, but not nearly as dominant as Warner was. Marshall Faulk wasn't the player he once was by that point either. The 2003 defense was absurd in getting turnovers that year, and was really the strength of the team.

Anyway, after 2001 free agency, salary cap, age, injuries, and Mike Martz being a head coach just derailed the entire operation. Off the top of my head guys like Dre Bly, London Fletcher, Kevin Carter, Az Hakim, and I can't remember who else had bounced. Warner had that hand injury in 2002 or whatever it was and just was so bad/beat up over the course of that year, that Bulger had to be inserted (and I think that was after Jaime Martin had a shot) Also in 2003 Warner looked so awful on opening day against the Giants Bulger took over, and Martz never looked back. Martz's offense also seemed to get stale after a bit which was probably a combination of him and in addition to key losses he couldn't replenish.

Really though, a 3 year run from a squad like that is probably the best anyone could hope for in this day of free agency and salary cap. Unless you're the Patriots and have the GOAT quarterback and coach in your pocket.

I remember the '03 and '04 Rams as one of the weaker playoff contenders of their day. They were holding on to the glory days by a thread, mostly because of their defense. Morally the GSOT had really died in 2002, and Mike Martz accepts a lot of the blame.

Two things. Mike Martz was not nearly as good as Vermeil despite what he was advertised as. Also Warner started getting injured and flushed out of St Louis by not being able to stay on the field. He was still a big part of that team's success in those days and when he fell off it caused a team decline. Plus Faulk started to slow down after 2001 and was gradually having worse and worse rushing years

Are you surprised Martz stayed as long as he did...all the way to 2005? Do you think he should have been fired after the 2003-04 season or after 2002?

Our defense was actually better in 2001
