Patriots ink Jabrill Peppers to 1 year deal

Only 26 years old. Former first rounder out of Michigan.

Peppers played in only six games last season, but has spent time with Joe Judge which is probably a significant factor in him getting signed. (apart from DB depth being needed sorely) Peppers also has an opportunity to step in as the top punt returner on special teams, or at least have a significant role in that spectacle of the game.

“Per PFF, he mainly lined up as a slot CB (107 snaps) followed by in the box (60), defensive line (32), outside CB (19) and free safety (11)”

Yesssss give me all the failed / injured safeties.

If he is healthy I have all the confidence in the world that this coaching staff will get the most out of him. Not sure what the money is but kind of wish it was a 2 year deal instead.. he is young and had a huge amount of potential coming out of college.

This is exactly what we have been talking about. BB is going with pure athletes. You mentioned Dax Hall at 21, its seems like a viable option.  You would have Peppers, Dugger  Phillips, Mills  and you add the rookie. It works if we can create pressure in the pocket.

If he goes Daxton Hill at 21. He needs to get Jones or Arnold Ebiketie.  BB passes on Hill, he will draft Wyatt at 21.  This has to BB thinking because I don't see him going with a rookie CB.

Crap,Crap,Crap unless he drafts Kaiir Elam.  Damn BB and what he looks for with CB traits!!!! He not a 1st RD talent!!!!! Damn 🤣

Daxton Hill makes all the sense in the world.. but I think this move may actually make it less likely. The reason being "it works if we can create pressure in the pocket" .. not only that but " it works if we can stop the run". If you have all these safeties on the field.. you will be in good shape for the pass game ( with decent CB's), but that doesn't stop a team from running down your throat. So you either need some great DL play or LB's that can make plays in the run game.

I really like this signing though, I think it's going to make the secondary really interesting.. assuming they can stop the run

I still see him being a big need. I would take him still because he can play CB.  The new term position- less player.  I also know it only works with DL pressure and that why I would work the board to get Wyatt or(more likely)Jones and Hill.

I would  also use Harris as a trade chip to get it done. Matter of fact I would trade him for picks in this draft. Smart GM would. He on the last year of his contract and he will get offers that the Pats won't match.

The Pats need to build for the future and 2022 is a building year.

I'm sick and tired of see players walk out the door without anything in return. Especially in a building year.

I like the move. Peppers is a chess piece, does a good job blitzing too.

Does beg the question on whose snaps he eats into, being that he’s not a pure cover guy. Having him, Phillips, and Dugger on the field together, seems redundant. Especially when you know McCourty isn’t coming off the field much and Jon Jones is going to be a slot guy. Will be fun to see but throwing another athlete in the backend never hurts.

Dugger is the future star of this secondary IMO. I also think Devin will start taking more plays off this season. I see Peppers as more of your gadget player. He has plays designed around his skillset like gap blitzing, run support, QB spy, etc.

Be interesting to see. I like Dugger’s outlook, think he’s got a pretty diverse skill set that, in a semi-realistic but ideal scenario, could develop into being a high quality all-around safety. I thought D-Mac was on a steep decline a couple times throughout the last 5 years or so, so he’s a hard one to gauge.

If Peppers can return to physical form, Bill’s going to have some some chess pieces to use in the back end. Which might be a necessity if the cornerbacks don’t add some talent, we’ll see a pretty different defense.

Generally, in sport, I don’t like ‘versatile’ players who have no real position, I’d much rather you just pick the player who specialises in each position and bring them all together to make a team

However, I think this is a good pickup. He was a good safety coming out of college and we’ll get the best out of him

I agree.

I would add that will go for all the DBs. BB will mix and match based on the opponent and even down to each play.  Call it match up defense. Also that why Dex Hall might be the pick. He plays all position in the secondary. Valuable weapon if this scheme works.

EX Some games you see McCourty 50 plays, others you don't see him.  Let say the Titans, Pepper would be the choice.
