Mock Draft Simulator SZN - Ravens Edition

Now that free agency is generally starting to slow down (although we may see another few moves take shape), thought it would be good to start a thread to share and discuss mock draft simulator results.

The Draft Network's draft simulator machine has been a favorite here in the past, and is the one I tend to use.

My most recent run:

R1. (P14) Trevor Penning, OT, Northern Iowa

R2. (P45) Tariq Woolen, CB, UTSA

R3. (P76) Josh Paschal, EDGE, Kentucky

R3. (P100) James Cook, RB, Georgia

R4. (P110) Mykael Wright, CB, Oregon

R4. (P119) Myjai Sanders, EDGE, Cincinnati

R4. (P128) Brandon Smith, LB, Penn State

R4. (P139) Eyioma Uwazurike, IDL, Iowa State

R4. (P141) Jalen Wydermyer, TE, Texas A&M

R6. (P196) Charleston Rambo, WR, Miami

Given EDC's seeming fondness for athletic traits (almost all his draft pick have been high RAS guys iirc), I'd have to imagine he's not even on our draft board after that horror show of a Pro Day he put up last week.  Those numbers weren't even good for an IOL prospect 😵

TBH, I wasn't up-to-date on that development, but that makes sense given him slipping on the board relative to where he was going a week or two ago.

Let's just pretend that pick says Chigoziem Okonkwo, TE, Maryland

I just don’t see us wasting a 4th round pick on a punter when we turned an undrafted free agent into the greatest kicker of all time…

If he becomes an All Pro or Pro Bowler at his position - a position that he could play for 10-15 years - that is more valuable than 90% of the 4th rounders we’ve drafted the last decade.

Id argue guys like Ben Bredeson, Jaleel Scott, Chris Moore, Tyre Phillips etc. are exponentially more “wasted” picks. Punter is a position where there’s really no transition speculation - he’s going to come in and make an immediate impact.

James Cook is a big want for me in this draft. I think he'd compliment this offense so well and make us even harder to defend against.

I hear what ur saying but it just isn’t feasible imo.. We create kickers/punters… I don’t think we draft one…

I disagree. As our offense isn’t as explosive as 2019 and so the field position battle is important. We’ve developed some quality PKs here in Baltimore.

However they’re learning from the GOAT and how many of them have thrived in their other opportunities not within our locker room confines?

Lastly, if the guys is nicknamed ‘punt god’ now, just imagine what he would be if/when we got our hands on him?

I mean I’m not sure what’s better considering puntatron would be a downgrade from ‘god’ and PuntTitan would be a clear name downgrade. Maybe the ‘puntalpha&omega’? Either way, I certainly think a late 4th wouldn’t be an overkill to obtain such a lethal weapon.

Defensive talent seemed to go early and often and thus I went for BPA offensive players at specific points until some defensive talents were in the BPA conversation. In retrospect, probably should’ve traded a future pick to move back into the draft to grab punt god, but that’s the only thing I’d change.

Grabbed talent and depth at our corner position which could be huge, both are guys with speed and play with tenacity in the secondary. McDuffie has pro bowl caliber traits but his size could have him fall some and Taylor has great athleticism for the position.

Grabbed some depth that could challenge for some rotational work, mainly with Luketa, but also with Robinson and OO. Robinson is especially intriguing as a developmental option IMO.

Kyren Williams sort of has that Mark Ingram type of skill set to him IMO and thus he should fit well with our RBs in the backfield IMO. McBride was simply a pure BPA pick. We love our TEs and Boyle is someone that could be a future cap casualty if he doesn’t have a huge/healthy years this season. Either way, I’m sure we could find a way to use a 3rd TE or the need for a playmaking TE would be there if for some reason we have some injury issues to one of our big three options in Andrews, Ricard, and Boyle.

Lastly, because the defensive talent didn’t present any BPA options, my main strategy was to come out of this draft class with one thing in mind, supplying Lamar with as elite an OL as possible.

With Harbaugh confirming Pat Mekari as the 1st in line for the center spot, we would benefit from allowing him to focus on one position. With Green in the fold, he could successfully replace some of the versatility potentially lost with Mekari going full time inside (and likely bulking up a bit more). Then to hopefully ensure that Green can dial in on the LG spot, I picked up NPF as a BPA option as someone that could be a legit starting caliber option at LT in the event that Stanley isn’t a) ready to go or b) not the same guy and can be beat out.

Lastly, why the trade with GB? Well I figured they might be interested in getting WR1 and I believe we might be uniquely positioned to provide a team with the opportunity to grab that guy  they most want. With Rodgers back, I’m sure WR will be a huge priority for them to obtain. While their two picks would uniquely position us to secure what I feel to be two picks at the best spot to secure talent within the 1st round, the first 25 or so players are all tightly coiled and it’s not until after that where I feel things get murky. I’d love to have two selections within that spectrum than just one.

Also if anyone is interested, this is my preferred mock draft site. They have a trade engine that I find to be realistic, I feel like their prospect consensus/ranking is fair and consistent with how many view these prospects, and lastly they seem to adjust their rankings to fit the changing landscape of prospect evaluations so that as we get closer and closer to the draft, we get as realistic a mock as possible.

Doesn’t seem to work so well on my iPad, but works fine on my phone, just as a heads up.

As I mentioned in the draft thread, reading the tea leaves, I can’t shake the feeling that if Stingley Jr falls outside the top 5, the Ravens will be very involved in trade up scenarios to obtain him.

The following is my take on how we might realistically execute a trade, while not sacrificing our ability to build the best team for a run in 2022….

TRADE
Round: 1, Pick 8
Derek Stingley Jr, CB | LSU
TRADE
Round: 1, Pick 26
Kenyon Green, IOL | Texas A&M

- If we can obtain Stingley Jr for fair value, I can’t see us not moving up with the Falcons. Generational corner, we’ve attacked the corner spot aggressively over the years but have always come up short. Stingley may be coming off a down year, but he’s shown he can be a generational CB prospect when last healthy and dialed in. Trading a 2022 3rd and swapping a 2023 3rd for a 4th would allow the Falcons to acquire assets to improve as well.
- Kenyon Green is IMO the perfect fit for this offense. I think he’s a future PB OG and will transition quickly to the pro game. Beyond that his versatility to play LT in a pinch should allow Mekari to legitimately slide inside to center and focus on specializing his craft, and then also Green’s versatility would allow him to backup Stanley in the event that he’s done. Green would very much also compliment Mekari and Stanley’s more finesse run blocking ability by virtue of adding more power at the POA to aid them in double team blocks. The future 2nd isn’t something EDC would ever want to give up again, but Lamar’s protection needs to be upgraded and if we’re willing to trade a future 2nd to acquire Lamar, than trading a future 2nd (and getting some picks back) should be what it takes to get Lamar’s interior pass protector for the next decade.

TRADE
Round: 3, Pick 88
Josh Paschal, Edge | Kentucky
TRADE
Round: 3, Pick 91
Trey McBride, TE | Colorado State
- The goal is building a strong 2022 unit and to do so adding an edge talent will be crucial. However at this point in the draft, most of the edge talents are guys that are projects, Paschal isn’t that guy. He’s got a VERY NFL ready skill set defending against the run and would be a perfect roll player option that can be a Courtney Upshaw type option and he’s noted as being a culture builder, he should be someone that thrives situationally as well as on special teams.
- McBride I’m sure gets selected in the 2nd round with how talented he looks to be on film. However if he’s available, he’s the perfect fit. He’d come in immediately and fill that Hayden Hurst role, but as a better receiver and blocker, no doubt in my mind. What’s more Boyle is a likely cap casualty for 2023 and this team could use a talented backup for Andrews in the event that his durability issues spring up again.

TRADE
Round: 4, Pick 110
Zyon McCollum, CB | Sam Houston St.
Round: 4, Pick 139
Jesse Luketa, LB | Penn State
TRADE
Round: 4, Pick 141
Thomas Booker, DL | Stanford
TRADE
Round: 4, Pick 143
Tyson Chandler, RB | North Carolina
- While we grab Stingley Jr in the first round, I wanted to make sure to add a traits freak that could potentially be coached up and eventually give us another guys that can cover a Tyreek Hill. McCollum has better traits and athleticism than Anthony Averett and would be an intriguing developmental option.
- Jesse Luketa is a very technically sound interior LB option. He’d pair well as a role player that could offer a similar skill set to Josh Bynes.
- Thomas Booker is from the surrounding Baltimore area, very intelligent player from Stanford that was a top HS recruit and offers a very intelligent player. He’s got the athleticism and traits that make him a quality developmental prospect and he’s got the kind of intelligence that makes his floor higher than your usual project IDL.

TRADE
Round: 6, Pick 219
Matt Araiza, P | San Diego St.
- Puntgod was available and it only made sense to take him. This pick concludes my mock draft.
