Results of 2022 GM Mock Draft (sort of like FFMD but not FFMD)

This year TCMD and FFMD did not happen (FFMD might be permanently dead now), but a few of us were able to put together a draft-only mock in the GM Mock Drafts forum, and we were able to find a GM for all 32 teams with only one or two teams having the same GM.

I did end up recruiting some help with Green Bay's picks, so I didn't go at this completely alone.

My thought process when making picks was to try to find guys that were good fits in the offensive and defensive systems that also fell within the historical size and athletic requirements for the various positions.  I realize Gute could stray from those requirements, but I was trying to get as close as I could to what I thought Gute might do, so I stuck with his past trends.  Obviously the board is going to fall very different when the real thing happens and Gute will most likely surprise us.

With that said, I thought you guys might be interested in the results for Green Bay, so here they are:

1.22:  George Karlaftis - Edge - Purdue -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=20969
I originally had my eye on Treylon Burks at this pick, but he went to Pittsburgh at pick 20.  I didn't expect Karlaftis to be here and had to jump on him when the pick came up.

1.28:  ---> traded to Atlanta for 2.43 and 3.82
I was waffling between Lewis Cine and Jalen Pitre here but decided to trade down with Atlanta at the last second (they picked Malik Willis).

2.43:  Alec Pierce - WR - Cincinnati -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21056
George Pickens went to Jacksonville at 33 and Pierce was the last of my higher-rated wide receivers so it was a no-brainer for me.

2.53:  Logan Hall - IDL/Edge - Houston -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21074
I was watching and hoping either Jalen Pitre or Kyler Gordon would make it here but Gordon went at 50 and Pitre went at 51.  Logan Hall seemed like a good fit with those guys gone.

2.59:  Abraham Lucas - OT - Washington State -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21107
I was torn here.  I tried to trade down but had no takers so ultimately ended up taking the only plug-and-play caliber OT left on the board.

3.82:  Kerby Joseph - S - Illinois -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21153
Wanted Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert here but Ruckert went at 78 and Woods went at 80.  Considered Leo Chenal but decided to go with the positional value and a position that we don't have much depth at, plus he's a ball hawking center fielder type, which is something we don't really have.

3.92:  Channing Tindall - ILB - Georgia -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21041
After 82 I was looking at Chenal here but he went at 84.  Considered David Bell (yes, yes, I know, terrible RAS) and Zyon McCollum, but Channing Tindall might be the fastest sideline to sideline ILB in the class and could end up being special in Barry's system.

4.132:  Zach Tom - OL - Wake Forest -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21566
This was an easy pick for me with the way the board fell.  If there's one thing GB likes in their offensive linemen, it's versatility, and they also like athletes.  Zach Tom checks both of those boxes.  He's played both OC and OT and should have no problem playing OG as well.  He can probably use a season in the strength program, but his athleticism and intelligence are great.  He also provides us with a viable backup OC should Myers go down again, and can probably play OT in a pinch if need be.

4.140:  Tyquan Thornton - WR - Baylor -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21448
Another easy pick for me.  We all know how fast this guy is.  He ran a 4.28 at the Combine and plays to that speed on the field.  Yes, his hands are small, but in the film I watched I saw no issues there (his drop rate on the season was somewhere around 4%), and he is a hands catcher rather than a body catcher.  He's faster than MVS and I think he'll eventually be better than MVS as well.

5.171:  Percy Butler - S - Louisiana -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21156
I agonized over this pick.  At this point my board was pretty much wiped out, so I started looking for projects/special teams demons, and Butler is both.  I considered Matt Waletzko here but didn't like the film even though his RAS was great.  Also considered James Mitchell or Daniel Bellinger but decided to go with positional value, plus we all know how GB likes their defensive backs.

7.228: ---> traded to New England for WR N'Keal Harry
I know Harry has been pretty lousy in New England, but he's a big bodied type that MLF seems to like and a good blocker, so I thought maybe a change of scenery and a new offense might kickstart something in him.  If not, they can cut him and all it cost was a 7th.

7.249:  Josh Thompson - CB - Texas -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21007
FINALLY landed a CB.  Thompson is a good special teamer and might be able to contribute some at CB/S.  Aggressive tackler and plays very hard.  GB used one of their visits on him so I figure he's a good bet to go to them in the 7th if he's around.

7.258:  Juanyeh Thomas - S/LB - Georgia Tech -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21011
It came down to Thomas and his teammate Tariq Carpenter (also a S/LB and GB used a visit on him).  Both are excellent ST contributors, are very good tacklers, and play hard with hot motors, but I chose Thomas because he is 2 years younger along with being a good kick returner and I felt he was a little better in coverage than Carpenter.  Thomas can play deep if needed, but he is best as a box safety/dime LB.  His main contribution for now will be ST.

Possible UDFA targets that didn't get drafted:
Tariq Carpenter - S - Georgia Tech (visited) -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21341
Scott Nelson - S - Wisconsin (visited) -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21201
Bam Olaseni - OT - Utah (visited) -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21567
Jaylen Watson - CB - Washington State -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21050
Kyler McMichael - CB - North Carolina -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21192
Isaiah Weston - WR - Northern Iowa -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21517
Dareke Young - WR - Lenoir-Rhyne -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21570 ---> Mr. Irrelevant
Tristin McCollum - DB - Sam Houston State (Zyon's identical twin brother) -- N/A as of posting
Ja'Tyre Carter - OL - Southern -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21028
Cal Adomitis - LS - Pittsburgh -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21095
Blaise Andries - OG - Minnesota -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21197
Nick Zakelj - OG - Fordham -- https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21175

Some notes:
- Had my eyes on CB throughout the draft but they kept going off the board before my picks.
- I tried using 249 and 258 to move up to grab Daniel Bellinger but had no takers.  He inexplicably lasted until 226.  Had Gute not traded the 6th for Bojorquez last season Bellinger would have been the pick in that round.

Lots of guys I like, featured here, especially the first three picks.

Ideally, I would have liked OT Tyler Smith at 43 if he was there, Pierce at 59 instead of Lucas, and a at TE at 82, like Otton..................but since I don't know how the board fell, they might not have been available (and it would have been very difficult to wait until #59 before bagging the first WR).

I like the picks, especially considering how the board fell. It's a little weird that Isaiah Weston went undrafted, considering his athletic profile, but I'll take it.

I'm a little concerned about the safety position, given that neither Amos or Savage are signed past this year. I guess maybe I'd have emphasized that before taking Pierce, but it would be nuts to go defense on the first 3 picks and I don't know who's on the board.

My knee jerk reaction is that not enough was done for the WR room.  But, after further review.  It's fine.  The players you got with picks that could have been used to trade up for a WR by far outweigh the trade.

Nice job.  I like the two OL that you got.  Really fortifies that position.  Getting the EDGE in round one is huge.

And you found a Lowry type guy for now and the future.

I really like the 4'th round WR.  Sleeper for sure.

And....I feel like this is something the front office would do.  I want flashy receivers.  You built a roster.  Again, nicely done.

Tyler Smith was there at 43.  I thought about waiting until 53 for Pierce but wasn't sure he'd be there and I think the Packers will be high on him, so went with him there.  Smith ended up going at 47.  At 82 I wanted Ruckert or Woods, but they went at 78 and 80, and Otton went at 77.  After that I was looking at Kolar in the 4th, but he went at 120.

I'm also concerned about S.  After Amos and Savage it's pretty sad, and like you said, both could possibly be gone next year.  Was thinking about Dax Hill in the 1st but he went at 21.  Was real close to grabbing Pitre at 28 but traded down and really thought he might make it to 53 but he went at 51, and Cine was off the board at 32.  I think Kerby Joseph could turn into a good player but it might take a couple years.  Butler has potential but needs work.  Should be a ST monster, though.

Excellent draft to me, have no issues with any picks. Karlaftis, Tom and Hall are draft crushes of mine.

I'm a big fan of Zach Tom.  I could see him being an Elgton Jenkins type where he can play up and down the line at a high level.  Not saying he'll be as good as Elgton, but I think he'll have that same versatility and can be a damn good player for us.

Cam Thomas was also available when I drafted Hall, but I'm intrigued by Hall with his frame and athleticism.  I think he has the potential to be really good in this defense.

As expected, the top receivers went pretty fast.  After Pierce I'm personally not a big fan of the rest of the taller/bigger receivers besides Thornton and Austin, and Austin went at 112.

I think you made the right choice on Pierce over Smith based on how the board was falling. WRs were dropping like flies, its a more immediate need than O-line, and you obviously were able to swing two excellent o-line prospects who could push our starting guards or maybe even claim and run with RT so Jenkins can play LG.

Third round LB looks like great value this year. Especially if the two two in the draft slide a bit we might see that trickle down to our pick in real life.

Obviously Karlaftis is the dream. He's my top option should he fall to us. I doubt it actually works out that way, but here's hoping!

The only gripes are that the WRs were going fast so we got shut out a little bit there, although trading for Harry gives us some potential there.  And as you mentioned the secondary doesn't really get that impact player who can play the slot effectively. But if we walk away from the draft with this haul then I think we're absolutely the favorites in the NFC.

Pitre going at 51 when I was sitting at 53 was a real bummer.  I liked landing Hall there, but Pitre was my target.  Was really hoping to get Pitre at 53 and Hall at 59.  Same with Woods and Ruckert going just before my pick at 82.  That's kind of how it went round by round with TE and CB.

The only WRs I had high on my board that didn't go in round 1 were Pickens and Pierce, and Pickens went at 33 (1st pick in the 2nd round).  Watson was gone at 26 so I would have had to use 22 on him and there's no way I'm trading Karlaftis for Watson.  Pierce was originally my target at 53 but after the 1st round run on WR I decided I better grab him at 43.  Was hoping to leave with Kevin Austin as well but he went at the top of the 4th (112).
