Yankees GM Brian Cashman was just asked about whether he'd listen to trade scenarios that include players in exchange for Gleyber Torres. His response?

"No. Come on now. I've got to walk around this city."

Anybody catch last nights debut of Jonathan Loaisiga ?

This kids got some good stuff - but what I really liked was his composure. Not having pitched above Double A previously, he answered all challenges. True it was TB and not BOS - but he showed a live arm and command of a full complement of pitches.

Wondering if Cash is showcasing him for a potential trade......and hope thats not the case. Pair this kid up with Sheffield and we've got some good arms coming up. I'd hate to trade this 23y/o for somebody in his mid 30's.

Nobody appreciates their former players like The Yanks.

Love Old Timers Day!

It is a good day.....but I think the current players must've spent the night out with the Old Timers - just for old times sake - cause their bats were numb, null & void against a very pedestrian pitching staff.

Perhaps it was too hot for them. Their bats looked slow and they continued a bad habit of swinging at *ridiculously* lousy pitches - you know, the kind that bounce off the ground in front of home plate? Correct me if I'm wrong - but outside one reliever, I dont think TB has any flame throwers that would mandate rearing up and swinging from your heels when the pitch is halfway to home plate.

Odd.

We're finding ways to win - but we've got ALOT of guys lost in the weeds hitting-wise.

This guy's the equivalent of dead CAP space in the NFL - only the guy's still on the team.

From the NY Post:

"Updates on Jacoby Ellsbury get shorter and shorter but the message never changes: There is no timetable for the outfielder to begin playing in minor league games on a rehab assignment.

“He is in Tampa working and saw a [back] specialist this past week,’’ Boone said.

Ellsbury, 34, suffered a strained right oblique muscle in spring training and was placed on the DL at the start of the season. Since then he has had hip and back issues. He has yet to play in a minor league game. He is making $21 million this year and in each of the next two seasons. There is a $5 million buyout on the $21 million option for the 2021 season the Yankees won’t pick up."

You're right about Betances. Watched one of the recent games and the announcer was discussing his past problems being him not keeping his front (left) shoulder in during delivery - which had his pitches moving all over the place (uncharacteristically).

He stays solid as he is now - he's taken back the 8th inning.

Control is key. He has it - he can chuck his nasty stuff. He doesnt have it - the slow sliders / curves come out to play....and minus a heater, often get smacked around. That - or he "walks" his way off the mound.

But looks like he's straightened out. Good for us.

Now - can anybody figure out Sanchez before the season's over? It would be nice if we could get steady production from him and/or Stanton (although GS had a nice game tonight. The Daily News is talking about Stanton opening his stance a bit - which sounds like a good idea to me. I'm amazed how little movement towards the ball he has. He basically hits flat footed - which means he stinks at adjusting to different pitch locations.

Enough with this personal catcher crap.

I dont have a problem with it if it helps get/keep Gray on track. Sanchez played himself on to the bench. He's not hitting for squat and thats what got him parked. Good HR/RBI numbers - but he's got no clue how to get hits consistently.

Normally - when he's not a guaranteed out - he'd be the everyday guy who could DH when Gray pitches. Not a loss IMO. Romine contributes behind the plate and has been holding his own with the bat hitting over .300

The guy that pisses me off - well there are two of them:

Bird - looks totally lost at the plate. Do the NYY have a Hitting Coach? Seems we have alot of guys with extended "cant figure it out" periods and I never hear he/they are working with anybody on anything. In any case, Bird's hitting a solid .192 now. Not prime production for a starting 1st baseman - and.....

Stanton. The guy's a stiff as a board up there. Everytime it feels like he may have gained some traction and be about to put a string of games together.......he whiffs up the joint.

We've got to get these middle of the lineup guys putting some good wood on the ball with consistency.

Dont mind me. Just ranting. I absolutely HATE IT when they come to Tampa and lay eggs to a minor league squad.

Here we go......found the answer to my own question.....

"To that end, Bird was working with hitting coach Marcus Thames prior to Saturday’s game on getting his hands into a better position on his load to be able to impact the baseball more"

Least now I have a name of somebody to blame for all these spotty hitting performances.

Nooooo, Gary Sanchez is nowhere near playing himself to the bench. Not even remotely close. Have you been watching his ABs lately? He’s crushing the ball. Hardest hit ball in the air and it was an out. Just bad luck right now. Comparing Romine’s hitting to Sanchez is absurd.

The personal catcher is not working. Gray is feasting on sub par competition. Today’s game (and a few of his recent starts) could have been a lot worse.

Bird has 78 ABs this year; not an issue. Small sample size.

Stanton is who he is. He’s a streaky hitter, he hasn’t gotten hot yet and is still putting up respectable numbers. His ABs are sometimes brutal to watch though.

One run vs Tampa in two games sucks but I’m not sounding an alarm on anyone in the lineup.

I said Sanchez *played* himself onto the bench. His weak hitting plus his calf injury bought him a few days rest - thats all. Other than that, he's been penciled in just about every lineup - which is a bit odd for a guy that's been batting at or below .200 the majority of the season. He's fifth on the team in games played and sixth in ABs.  He's had his spikes - no question - and his HRs (14 to Judge's 18) and RBIs (41 to Judge's 51) totals are nice - and yes - he has been crushing the ball - this is good - its also just for the last few days. Consistency and a .194 batting average shouldnt be mentioned in the same sentence. I'm not saying bench him. I just wish somebody would figure out what he's doing wrong at the plate - or how pitchers have adjusted to him - and switch things up to counteract it.

Having Romine catch every 5th game - when Sanchez can move to DH - is no loss. He's a BIG DUDE. Getting him some down time and relief from catching duties - in the heat of summer is a good thing. If getting Romine some playing time is necessary to make Gray as good as Gray can be - not a bad plan IMO. It'll keep Romine sharp - supposedly improve Grays production/results - and give Sanchez's legs a break.

I'm not saying Bird should be benched - just that he's completely lost up there.

Here's the deal....our every day lineup has the 3rd and 4th highest strike out guys in the entire league. Judge and Stanton have struck out over 100 times each. Granted they touch the ball it could go someplace far very quickly, but those strikeouts are two LARGE black holes for a daily lineup to overcome - so the guys around them better be producing. Having both Bird and Sanchez - lineup regulars - both batting below .200 only compounds the size of those black holes and frankly, I'm not sure we've got the pitching staff to compensate for it over the long haul.

We've got the best record in baseball. 1st in HRs. 3rd in runs. 3rd in RBIs. 11th in AVG. - so no alarm bells going off anywhere that I know of - but theres still room for improvement.
