Bears draft C Doug Kramer (Illinois) 207th overall

Draft Scouting Report:

Rating: 71.57 (Chance to start)

Pro Comparison: Brian Schwenke

Strengths:

Career center with the short-area quickness to excel in a scheme that will ask him to be on the move frequently. Decently effective getting to his assignments for the run game. Reach blocks are stellar. Flashes of good power because he plays low and anchors decently well for being a touch disadvanged size/length wise. Run-blocking ahead of his work in pass pro, but he's aware of secondary rushes and will at least get part of the defender because he's quick.

Weaknesses:

Not somone you want starting immediately but has upside because of his athleticism. Major issue is he's on the ground a lot. Way more than what's considered normal. It's mostly a byproduct of him going all out on every play, but a fair amount of his second-level blocks are him diving at the feet of the defender because he's off balance or simply over-extends himself speed-wise.

Accolades:

  • 2021: All-Big Ten second team (coaches)
  • Four-year starter with 2,300-plus snaps at center

Falling on the ground too much is not a trait that I am happy to see in my Olinemen.

Looks to me like a kid whose a very experienced good football player.  Nice addition at OC and maybe allows "Flus" to keep looking at Mustpher at RG.

SUMMARY: Doug Kramer Jr. started playing tackle football in fifth grade and continued as a three-year starter at Hinsdale Central High, where he earned conference offensive lineman of the year honors as a senior. A three-star recruit, he grew up in an Illinois family (his parents’ alma mater) and was ready to walk on until he received his dream offer weeks before 2016 signing day. Aside from a few missed games because of injury, he started every game the past five years with more than 3,000 career snaps on offense (100% of those at center). Kramer is quick with his snap and step and uses his lower body bend and natural leverage to stay under his blocks. He is technically sound and recovers well, but his short arms will keep him at a disadvantage vs. rushers across his face and long defenders in the run game.

Overall, Kramer is undersized and doesn’t offer position flex, but he is quick, smart and the type of grinder capable of carving out a multi-contract NFL career.

Kramer fits this scheme far better than Mustipher and is cheaper...that is about all we need to know on this one.

I agree, we literally started an undrafted Mustipher last year.....with him and Lucas Patrick I'm digging the upgrade

Physically he reminds me a lot of Brian Allen, who they rumoured to be in on during free agency.

You need an athletic C for the system to really work.

He is a backup C who is better than Musty, if Kramer has to play at least those reps are going to developing him.

I am also a big believer in having a dictated backup C. It is hard to move from OG and make all the line calls. It is damn near impossible to do it mid game.

Snapping and immediately blocking is a separate skill as well.

LOL.....with that accent Shiver seems like one of those southern hucksters who could sell peanut oil to a peanut farmer.  He's amusing to say the least.  Sounds like he should be working at a Farm and Feed Store Co-op.  LOL

Kramer is just another late round pick who lacks the desired size and overall skills to be a top prospect and he plays a position that is only highly drafted when there are top shelf prospects like Linderbaum.  Once Kramer adds some core strength and has some experience with NFL DL he may eventually become a decent starter or at the very least experienced depth.  Smart pick.
