Rome Gameplan:

Motivation

After a poor start to our season, we need to win every game.  We will not be looking past OKC

Offense

Drew Brees leads our attack this week against a solid defense coming from Oklahoma City.  The key to being successful against this defense is to stop Von Miller.  We plan on chipping or double teaming him on every single passing play to make sure Brees has enough time to be successful.

Expect our offense to be more well balanced for this contest.   The best way to slow down an excellent pass rush duo is to use their aggressiveness against them.  We will institute a lot of draws and power o’s this week that will let the edges run themselves out of the play.  We feel that if Gurley can get to the second level, he should do well against a struggling LB duo.

Up front we welcome back Marcus Gilbert, who has consistently been one of the better right tackles in the league for the past couple years.  With Foster and Linder also back, we feel we have a huge advantage up front on the right side and will design a lot of our runs to go that direction.  Gurley has been a beast this year and we plan to give him 25 touches from the run or pass game.

Our main goal for this game is to let Brees get a good idea early who is covering whom by using a motion man, typically Cooper.  PP7 has been pretty solid this year but we won’t shy away from throwing the ball in his direction completely.  However, we do plan on using our other weapons more so in this game than in previous weeks.  We want to attack Beckwith if we can in the passing game as he hasn’t been that great in coverage thus far.  We will rotate ASJ and Gurley on that side of the field to keep them fresh as the other will be chipping or blocking miller

We will also institute some 4 wide formations on the regular. In these formations, look for us to go after Eli Apple with JuJU or amendola.   If OKC plays a zone (which again we can help decipher quickly with the motion man) then expect floods, seams, and WR screens).  We feel our defense can keep OKC from scoring much so we won’t lay a risk heavy gameplan this week

TL?DR     More balanced this week, the talent should speak for itself, Allow Brees the quick read of the defense using motion, Eliminate MIller from making an impact

Defense

Unfortunately for OKC they have had some injuries this year on their offensive line which has left them mixing and matching some players on their interior which leads them vulnerable to a pass rush up the middle.  Thus, our gameplan is to do just that.

We will lineup in our base nickel defense.  However, we will have TE eraser Patrick Chung in the box over Jared Cook.  On the outside, Jenkins shuts down Thielen, Prince gets Hurns, while William Jackson gets a start in the nickel against Jeremy Maclin.    Our LB will rotate against the RB depending on who is blitzing.  We like the physicalness of our corners and we will be using a heavy man scheme this week against a solid, if unspectacular group of weapons,

The first goal of stopping a Cam Newton offense is keeping him in the pocket and making him throw accurately and quickly.  If you give Cam time and room to be creative, he will have some success.  Thus we will be blitzing up the middle just about every play.  Both of our edges are responsible for a contain pass rush.  With Brockers and Tomlinson eating up blockers inside, we should be able to get Mosely or Woodyard on free runs at Cam up the middle.  Leaning on our corners to maintain coverage this game, we feel we can force Cam into some early mistakes and win the turnover battle.  We will also be occasionally zone blitzing just to make Newton that much more uncomfortable in the pocket and test his quick decision making skills.

This Cover one high safety concept also allows us to put 8 in the box and snuff out any attempts at a running game.

TL/DR:  Make Cam beat us through the air.  Maintain edge responsibilities, lean on excellent corner trio.

OKC Gameplan:

Offense:

Our bad offensive line luck continues with TJ Lang out for this week. We foolishly started the year thin on the interior (or really across the entire offensive line) and it's really bite us this year. We entered the year with likely the best O-line in BDL, but yet we are currently stuck with an absolute train wreck. Despite this, we're going to try to run the ball this week as we believe it's the only way we will be able to move the ball against Rome. With Jenkins likely covering Thielen and with Reed hurt (he's always hurt though so he really should just be treated as normal haha) we don't have a ton of threats to scare Rome. Therefore, we will utilize Alex Collins, Cam Newton, and Joe Mixon and various run plays both inside and outside to wear down the Rome linebackers. When we do throw the ball, we will still try to focus on getting it to Thielen and Reed on intermediate routes. Similar to last week, we will try to get Taywan Taylor, Mike Wallace, and Jared Cook involved deep.

Defense:

We believe we matchup well against Rome's offense. Our corners have all played well this year, and we will look to play heavy man against an expected 4 WR set. Patrick Peterson will cover Amari Cooper, Morris Claiborne on Michael Crabtree, Trevor Williams on Juju Smith-Schuster, and Brent Grimes on Ted Ginn. Our safeties will play both Cover-1 and Cover-2 and provide help over the top on Ginn. When we play Cover-1, Adrian Amos will line up in the box to provide additional run support. Against this 4 wide set, our pass rush should get home against Drew Brees. Against a 3 wide set, we will take Brent Grimes off the field for Kendell Beckwith. In this case, Eric Kendricks will take the TE.

it was more in reply to you saying he was likely out...haha

I was just trying to be funny. I'm certainly not arguing for my victory.

And Drango doesn't play center, but it's not like Daryl Williams or Joe Barksdale play guard, either.

right, but Drango has played guard so if you're just gonna put rando's at positions.  you might as well put a guy at a spot he's played instead of having two guys at spots they never have

Yep I think it comes down to the OLs again. Rome still hasn't quite reached it's ceiling offensively, but with a strong OL, Gurley and Brees available, it's going to be a viable offense no matter what. Despite the strength of OKC's D, Rome will move the chains and get the ball downfield often enough to put some points on the board. On the flip side, OKC's rather defeatist stance and focus on the run appears pretty predictable and Rome should be well equipped to stop it, particularly with Reed out. I figure Newton carries the team on his back to some extent, but with that OL compared to his great one IRL, he can't do it all.

Rome 24 - 13 OKC
