I know the Vikings need a CB and can't just abandon a position for previous draft failures. However, this year I'm out on taking a 1st rd CB. The defense need players at other positions. Unless the CB is truly the BPA then I say no on CB in round 1.

I honestly just don’t see it as our biggest need.

At the same time I just want us to draft the best player on the board. If that’s a CB I’m here for it.

I’d be more inclined to draft Siaki Ika at 23 than some of these cornerbacks that keep getting mocked to them.

Resign Tonga and draft Ika. The depth everywhere across the line gets better. Being able to rotate capable bodies and keep everyone fresh will make a world of difference.

Do the Vikings have a need at Center?  Do you think Bradbury will be resigned?

He was playing well before he got hurt. I have no idea if they can afford him or not. That said, he was just ok previous years (though the OGs next to him were largely awful most of the time).

You can make the argument to re-sign Bradbury after the solid season he had, but there’s also the chance that he priced himself out of Minnesota.

Also, while Bradbury had a solid year, finding a center with more strength at the point of attack wouldn’t be a bad thing.

I'd still put those positions above C even if they don't resign Bradbury. There are some FAs out there that would fit the bill and the team would improve more with focus on the other really bad spots.

Agreed on that last point.  FWIW, Mike Clay (from that earlier tweet used about Tomlinson), has Bradbury as the #2 C FA.

This 2021 class is nuts, they have literally only four guys left.  Darrisaw, P. Jones, Nwangwu and Bynum and Darrisaw is the only one with super high upside.  Mond, Surratt, Davis, Robinson, Smith-Marsette, Twyman and Davidson are all on other rosters two years after the Vikings drafted them.  Sure a lot of that is the GM change of course but still.

2021 1 Christian Darrisaw 23 OL 2022 0 0 0 12 26 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     Virginia Tech
2021 3 Kellen Mond 66 QB 2021 0 0 0 0 1 2 3 5 0 0     0     0     Texas A&M
2021 3 Chazz Surratt 78 LB 2022 0 0 0 1 10 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     North Carolina
2021 3 Wyatt Davis 86 OL 2022 0 0 0 0 9 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     Ohio St.
2021 3 Patrick Jones II 90 DL 2022 0 0 0 2 25 0 0 0 0 0     0     0   4.0 Pittsburgh
2021 4 Kene Nwangwu 119 RB 2022 0 0 0 3 28 0 0 0 0 0 22 75 0 6 30 0     Iowa St.
2021 4 Camryn Bynum 125 CB 2022 0 0 0 8 31 0 0 0 0 0     0     0 3 1.0 California
2021 4 Janarius Robinson 134 DE   0 0 0                               Florida St.
2021 5 Ihmir Smith-Marsette 157 WR 2022 0 0 0 1 16 0 0 0 0 0 1 -1 0 6 131 2     Iowa
2021 5 Zach Davidson 168 TE   0 0 0                               Central Missouri St.
2021 6 Jaylen Twyman 199 DL   0 0 0                               Pittsburgh

Only one on this entire list that started at all consistently was Ingram obviously.  So that is not good at all but of course injuries had a lot to do with it.

2022 1 Lewis Cine 32 DB 2022 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     Georgia
2022 2 Andrew Booth 42 CB 2022 0 0 0 1 6 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     Clemson
2022 2 Ed Ingram 59 G 2022 0 0 0 7 17 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     LSU
2022 3 Brian Asamoah 66 LB 2022 0 0 0 1 16 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     Oklahoma
2022 4 Akayleb Evans 118 DB 2022 0 0 0 1 10 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     Missouri
2022 5 Esezi Otomewo 165 DT 2022 0 0 0 0 5 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     Minnesota
2022 5 Ty Chandler 169 RB 2022 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 6 20 0     0     North Carolina
2022 6 Vederian Lowe 184 OL 2022 0 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     Illinois
2022 6 Jalen Nailor 191 WR 2022 0 0 0 1 15 0 0 0 0 0     0 9 179 1     Michigan St.
2022 7 Nick Muse 227 TE 2022 0 0 0 0 10 0 0 0 0 0     0     0     South Carolina

So the Vikings have some major work to do but only 5 picks to do it with.  Sucks but they will have to hit on them, no more pick bonanza anymore.  Not sure what the UDFA class will look like, could be ok but not in certain positions.  RB, TE and OT you might have some decent guys fall through but no really at CB or C.

The Chiefs got Jaylen Watson and Isiah Pacheco in the 7th round and both contribute a lot for them, and the 49ers obviously got Purdy.  So every pick does matter and should matter, especially when you only have 5 of them.

Bradbury had a good year by Bradbury standards. It doesn’t hurt that Ingram had a lot of growing pains which shifted some of our focus. If we are looking at a one year sample, I’d say he was average at best for a starting center. Plenty of room to upgrade there, and when he went down, his replacement wasn’t that staggering of a drop off. If Bradbury wants to stay here, I’d be fine with that, so long as the contract is reflective of his career and not just this season. John Michael Schmitz is still my North Star as someone we can maneuver to get in the 3rd round or so.

So this is my take from the 2021 draft class. You got a cornerstone player out of this draft class at a premium position. Darrisaw is one of the premier young left tackles in this league, freaking homerun A++++ pick.

And then....there's the rest of the draft. Bynum regressed, Patrick Jones looks like a decent rotation guy and probably nothing else.

With the number of picks Rick had, you wish you could get some more starters out of it. That said, you can't have a bad draft when you get one of the best players in the league at their respective position. It's just not possible since elite players are so rare and obscure to draft.

My biggest issue with the 2021 draft was having all that ammo and not moving up.

Ricks philosophy of quantity over quality failed him.

I agree with that, but the change of defensive scheme did no favors to Janarius and Jaylen (and of course getting shot didn't help him either).  I was disappointed that he chose not to move up on some occasions (2020 was more egregious though).

I'm not going to be too hard on Bynum though, because again, I'm not sure that Donatell used any of the safeties how they should be used.

Of course the scheme change didn’t help, but I really wasn’t referring to any of the day 3 players, either. It was standing pat with the four 3rd rounders.
