Ghostnote
I have been mulling this over for some time now and it has just been made clear that this team does not need Jordan Reed. Nor, are they incapable of winning without him. The closest was in 2015 and he was a beast. Best TE in the league. One of the best when he is healthy. But at the start of 2017, Reed was injured this off season due to a foot injury. Now he has a hamstring injury that has kept him out the last few games. 2 years ago, he signed an extension with the Redskins, it is shown below. Yet, he has not completed a single season healthy. If healthy, I honestly have no problem with any of this money because of his production show above. When he is on the field he is one of the most potent weapons to have, one of the best TE's in the NFL, and a mismatch over the middle for any LB or S. I get it. But, there's a catch. 2016 26 $1,250,000 $1,937,278 $218,750 $3,406,028 $14,000,000 $10,468,750($10,468,750) 2017 27 $3,750,000 $1,800,000 $187,500 $5,737,500 $10,950,000 $3,937,500($14,406,250) POTENTIAL OUT: 2018, 2 YR, $14,406,250; $5,400,000 DEAD CAP 2018 28 $8,250,000 $1,800,000 $250,000 $10,300,000 $5,400,000 $8,500,000($22,906,250) 2019 29 $7,671,000 $1,800,000 $250,000 $9,721,000 $3,600,000 $7,921,000($30,827,250) 2020 30 $8,250,000 $1,800,000 $250,000 $10,300,000 $1,800,000 $8,500,000($39,327,250) 2021 31 $8,750,000 - $250,000 $9,000,000 - $9,000,000($48,327,250) He will not be a free agent until 2022. I cannot wait that long for him to have a healthy season. I cannot wait that long for him to have a game where he is not getting injured. At this point, his injuries are becoming too much to maintain while others are out performing him at nearly 6 years older in age. I think its time to let him go. After the 2018 season, if he cannot stay healthy, there is a OPT OUT Clause for the Redskins, in which, they would have paid his guaranteed money, and the Dead Cap remaining would the remainder of his bonus which is $5.4M. The Redskins would actually save over 3.5M just by cutting him. I don't know all the ins and outs of the new CBA, but from what I have read, that after 2017, the only option to gain any money from him against the cap would be a Post 6/1 Trade which would net us 3.5M-ish. Folks. We have some options from this medical nightmare. Frankly, I am sick of not seeing him out on the field whether it be from concussion, hamstring, foot, thigh, hangnail, you name it. If a 2nd round option were to come along for him, and I were Bruce Allen, I would entertain the idea. What do you guys think?
Doc Draper
Mike- completely agree. Sell the Jag, Woz? I say give me a tough 3/4 ton pickup with a passenger cab and 4 wheel drive with a semi that will run for 250K miles everyday.
Thaiphoon
Yup. I called for it in my "Thought experiment" thread. For all the reasons you state.
ARTMONK HOF
Mike- Nice Post and I totally agree for freeing Jordan Reed.
lavar703
I can understand wanting to get rid of him. I'm on the fence about it and leaning towards keeping him but it is frustrating that he misses so many games. Some of it has to be just him not wanting to play. The year he got paid he played through broken ribs and everything else and was the most dominant player on the field most days. Well, he got paid and now he's back to calling out every day. The bad thing is we all already know what's going to happen if he leaves. You can see it coming a mile away.
Ghostnote
I am interested to see what Jeremy Sprinkle can bring to the table. Hell, I would fine with taking a TE like Fumagalli from Wisconsin.
rizzy
I don't think there is any way we get a 2nd for him everyone knows he can't stay healthy. I think the best we get is a 4th and for that price I would rather just get 10 games from Reed.
Danger
Here's your predicament. If he's not healthy and not producing at the level that was expected of him at the time of signing, then you'll be lucky to get a 4th round pick. He has a hefty contract that isn't necessarily something teams want to pick up. If he is playing as he did a couple seasons ago when healthy, do you guys really want to trade him? HTTRDynasty
This was as of December 21, 2016. I'd want to check the updated stats before I even consider trading Reed. https://wtop.com/sports-columns/2016/12/the-reason-washington-shouldnt-pay-kirk-cousins/
Doc Draper
Its pretty, but its always broken down I prefer my TE's bigger, stronger and still just as fast
SeanTaylorsaPIMP
I wish we traded for/signed Vernon Davis a long time ago. He's been so solid and reliable in that role. His blocking sometimes isn't the best but he stays healthy and he is consistent. I'm on board with trading Reed if we can get decent return. MKnight82
The problem is that Reed is probably worth more to us than what we'd get for him on the trade market. Reed's the 3rd highest paid TE in the NFL, and his injury history is well known. No one is going to give us anything of value for him.
Doc Draper
Sometimes you just gotta let go. reed is a coach killer- Great when healthy, but rarely ever healthy. Boys a Doc analogy- from Jeremiah Johnson- am awesome movies Bro's: Jeremiah Johnson: Y'ever get lonesome? Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Fer what? Jeremiah Johnson: Woman? Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Full time night woman? I never could find no tracks on a woman's heart. I packed me a squaw for ten year, Pilgrim. Cheyenne, she were, and the meanest ***** that ever balled for beads. I lodge-poled her at Deadwood Creek, and traded her for a Hawken gun. But don't get me wrong; I loves the womens, I surely do. But I swear, a woman's breast is the hardest rock that the Almighty ever made on this earth, and I can find no sign on it. Jordan Reed is like that Full Time night woman Bear Claw is talking about. Great for a few times and then breaks your heart or busts your balls continually. Trade him for a Hawken gun Move on for a 6th round pick.
