Isn't Jordan Reed contributing 12 games a season worth more than a 6th round pick?

This is from SportTrac; If we are paying him 9.4m for 12 games thats effectively 11.7m for a full 16 game schedule. Hes gifted, no doubt, but not worth that much. Now if we had a contract paying him 6M then maybe its worthwhile, but still the offense cant count on him and everything changes when he is out.

Woz, I can appreciate the analytical perspective, but that is assuming that each and every player is equal to the person to his right or left. Its not.

Honestly, I would gladly take a Troy Niklas or Austin Sefarian Jenkins over Jordan Reed at this point. They both have shown they can be productive and stay on the field. Oh, and both are free agents at the end of this year.

I know that not every player is equal to the others on the roster. That's why I was leaning towards keeping Reed.

Niklas and ASJ's status for this coming year is somewhat irrelevant since Reed has a guaranteed salary in 2018 (well, you'd have to trade him really early in March before the league year begins to avoid it guaranteeing). I was under the impression you were using 2018 as a go/no-go year, or at the very least a hopefully "look at this shiny sports car!" kind of year for Reed to rehabilitate his value. Signing either of the other two would be somewhat of a waste since that kind of hints that you're trying to sell him.

The front office needs the coaching staff and Cousins to try more passes to Jeremy Sprinkle. They have to know that whatever they get from Davis in the next couple of years is essentially found money, and Niles Paul is a known commodity (I don't want to get into argument about whether to keep him or not).

The one wild card/unknown is Sprinkle. If he can catch effectively, then maybe they can start investigating trading Reed. If not, then either they need to draft yet another TE (somewhat of a waste for this coming year, due to the roster composition (I don't know what the TE class looks like)), or they need to keep Jordan around and accept that they'll only get 60-75% of a season out of him.

I’d never trade Jordan Reed. Even if we only get 12 or 13 games out of him every year, his production is invaluable to our passing offense. The exact reason we signed Vernon Davis is because not only does he compliment Reed well in the passing game because he’s more of a straight line speed guy where Reed does he damage through elite route running and quick movements/jab step moves but because we expect Reed to miss a few games every year and Davis can fill the void we have when Reed is out with injury every year.

I suspect that if Sprinkle doesn’t develop into a good #2 pass catching TE in the next few years - which I expect him to because I already like the little I’ve  seen from him this year - that we will draft a mid round TE when Davis retires in a few years who is hopefully a good blocker and receiver.

All I know is he, Ertz and Kelsey got paid the same offseason. And Jordan has been the least productive! The dude gets hurt running routes like the man don’t stretch or something. I️ like him wouldn’t trade him for a 6th. But you best believe I’d draft a top notch TE if the value was there early. He had one year where he trained with Trent in the offseason and he played in 14 games started 12. You have JD developing into a weapon and it looks like Mo Harris is going to be a stud. If The ghost of Crowder can go away and we get the dependable mistake free Crowder back along with a motivated Jordan Reed we have a chance

SURPRISE SURPRISE. Guess who is out, Uh-gain. Jordan Reed. Out for Thursday against the Giants.

Earn that check to pay your medical bills son. I just don't see how you can afford to keep the (barely) walking bandage around.

Gawd. So frustrating.

It’s a hamstring injury, they are tricky. Reed had a set back last week when he was pushing it and thought he could play. He shouldn’t push it to come back 7ntil he’s close to 100%. We also should know hamstring injuries can keep players our for weeks or months based upon Djax missing 7 games in 2015. I’d rather him take it slow and come back the last 3 or 4 games than to hurt it more like last week in practice.
