dll2000
So Lions, Texans, Seahawks, Dolphins and Eagles all shrewdly picked up or kept an extra first rounder for 2023 in case they need ammo to move up for QB. Seems kind of short sighted by Giants that they passed on doing that despite having two top 10 picks to do so with. I guess they figure they can always pull a 49ers if they need to and just offer 3 first rounders. Maybe that will be for us.
dll2000
Next time you are fretting about cap think about this. Browns went into free agency a bit ago and signed top OT and TE in Conklin and Hooper. First wave guys. You can’t sign first wave guys, then you can’t sign anyone else right? That is what we are told. They extended Myles Garrett one of top players in league. They brought in the ‘overpaid’ Amari Cooper and took on his salary. They signed David Njkou or however you spell it. They extended Chubb. Never pay RBs right? It will cripple you. You can’t have anyone else if you pay a rb. The picked up Bakers 5th year which is huge, like 19 million for one year. They extended Ward a top corner. Then they just signed Watson to monster deal. Now they just signed Clowney. But, but, but can the Bears afford a back up guard from Buffalo who showed he may be pretty good when starting? This is question we ask. It seems ridiculous in comparison. You can have many expensive players on a team at same time if you are willing to pay for them. You can say well Browns always suck. You still have to gel and coach talent. Yankees didn’t win World Series every year when they were blowing everyone away in spending, but ask Milwaukee if they would trade payrolls. Dallas does it often. Rams do it. Point is some teams just keep adding and adding guys and money just works out. Seems more of a want to than a hard restriction.

Isn’t the whole lesson to be taken here that there’s no one right way to do it? LAR spent like crazy and won a SB and went to another, but Dallas hasn’t won **** in 30 years and Cleveland has had muddling success at best despite their multi-year spending spree. Meanwhile, BUF has built almost entirely organically and has probably the deepest roster in the league now. IND has too but they’re relying upon a declining late 30s QB to be the difference. The Eagles “Dream Team” with Nnamdi Asomugha was a disaster.

I completely agree there are many ways to build a successful team...the one thing I will say though is you have to have a plan and you have to stick to it as much as possible.

Cooper's guaranteed money remained with Dallas and the Browns converted his salary into pro-rated bonus. Ward, Chubb, and Garrett all signed back-loaded extensions that will escalate by a combined 30M+ next season. Bottom line is there are still rules, spending is still capped, and teams can still get themselves into trouble. Just because the rules are not straightforward does not mean there's no hard restriction.
dll2000
Seattle has an article up describing their draft in real time. They tried to go up and down a bunch of times. They tried to trade up for GBs pick at 28. They really wanted Cross, I think they even considered trading up for him. They had an offer at their pick, but decided they liked Cross too much and took him. When guys go off the board they have no interest in they call it an upset and some guy yells it out for some reason. Looks like they admit or let it be printed that they wanted Breece Hall, but Jets got him. Also Arnold Ebiketie. But they got their next best choices in Mafe and Walker. They say they were highest on board, but it sounds to me like they were going position specific in their board rankings and not BPA. Because they had two other OTs they wanted aside from Cross with first pick and then they were lining up pass rushers and RBs. Interesting. The room cheered loudly when Bears took Velus LOL. It was said because they loved Lucas so much, but that is still kind of funny to me.

Amon St. Brown surprised everyone last year and a whole bunch of WRs went in front of him in first 4 rounds that have done squat thus far. Never know until you know.

dll2000
I saw somewhere that Kelce was 25 his rookie year. For what it’s worth.
