WAY too early roster predictions

With OTAs this week and next, and mandatory minicamp approaching, I thought it would be a fun idea to guess the roster and practice squad from the current roster.  We can run this thread for a week or so, then come back to it later, when we start making more educated attempts to predict the roster, to see what has changed in our opinions after all workouts are done.  I copied the roster from Packers.com so if there are issues, take it up with them.

QB - Kurt Benkert, Danny Etling, Jordan Love, Aaron Rodgers

RB - B.J. Baylor, AJ Dillon, Tyler Goodson, Kylin Hill, Aaron Jones, Patrick Taylor

WR - Randall Cobb, Danny Davis III, Romeo Doubs, Allen Lazard, Amari Rodgers, Malik Taylor, Samori Toure, Anthony Turner, Sammy Watkins, Christian Watson, Juwann Winfree

TE - Dominique Dafney, Tyler Davis, Josiah Deguara, Marcedes Lewis, Alize Mack, Robert Tonyan, Eli Wolf

C - Jake Hanson, Michal Menet, Josh Myers

G - Elgton Jenkins, George Moore, Royce Newman, Sean Rhyan, Jon Runyan, Cole Schneider, Zach Tom

T - David Bakhtiari, Caleb Jones, Yosh Nijman, Cole Van Lanen, Rasheed Walker

DL - Abdullah Anderson, Dean Lowry, Akial Byers, Kenny Clark, Jonathan Ford, Jack Heflin, Hauati Pututau, Jarran Reed, T.J. Slaton, Devonte Wyatt

LB - Krys Barnes, Caliph Brice, Ellis Brooks, De'Vondre Campbell, Peter Kalambayi, Isaiah McDuffie, Ty Summers, Quay Walker, Ray Wilborn

EDGE - Kingsley Enagbare, Tipa Galeai, Jonathan Garvin, Rashan Gary, LaDarius Hamilton, Kobe Jones, Chauncey Manac, Randy Ramsey, Preston Smith

CB - Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Kabion Ento, Rico Gafford, Shemar Jean-Charles, Keisean Nixon, Eric Stokes, Raleigh Texada, Kiondre Thomas

S - Adrian Amos, Tariq Carpenter, Shawn Davis, Innis Gaines, Darnell Savage, Vernon Scott, Tre Sterling

K - Mason Crosby Dominik Eberle

P - Pat O'Donnell

LS - Jack Coco, Steven Wirtel

Green players are this season's draft picks.  If you think we are going to add an outside player, denote him in blue.  It could be as specific as Julio Jones or generic as TE.

Since it is my thread, I will add my stupid predictions:

QB - Jordan Love, Aaron Rodgers (2)

RB - AJ Dillon, Aaron Jones, Patrick Taylor (3)  Kylin Hill PUP

WR - Randall Cobb, Romeo Doubs, Allen Lazard, Amari Rodgers, Samori Toure, Sammy Watkins, Christian Watson (7)

TE - Dominique Dafney, Tyler Davis, Josiah Deguara, Marcedes Lewis, Robert Tonyan (5)

OL - David Bakhtiari, Jake Hanson, Josh Myers, Yosh Nijman, Royce Newman, Sean Rhyan, Jon Runyan, Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker (8)  Elgton Jenkins PUP  25O

DL - Dean Lowry, Kenny Clark, Jarran Reed, TJ Slaton, Devonte Wyatt (5)

LB - Krys Barnes, De'Vondre Campbell, Quay Walker, Ray Wilborn(4)

EDGE - Kingsley Enagbare, Jonathan Garvin, Rashan Gary, Randy Ramsey, Preston Smith (5)

CB - Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Shemar Jean-Charles, Keisean Nixon, Eric Stokes, Raleigh Texada (6)

S - Adrian Amos, Tariq Carpenter, Innis Gaines, Darnell Savage, Vernon Scott (5)  25D

STs - Mason Crosby, Pat O'Donnell, Steven Wirtel (3)

Last in:  Dominique Dafney.  I like what he does, but I think Deguara is a better version of him.  Don't like keeping 5 TEs, may not if I was confident Tonyan was 100%

Last out:  Kurt Benkert.  I think he is solid.  Absolutely hope he sticks on the PS.  Love needs all the reps that he can get from now on.

Samori Toure and Rasheed Walker probably go to PS when Hill and Jenkins return from PUP.  Very tempted to add a blue LS.

PS:  Kurt Benkert QB, Shawn Davis S, BJ Baylor RB, Juwann Winfree WR, Cole Schneider G, Cole Van Lanen T, Jonathan Ford DT, Caleb Jones T, Ellis Brooks LB, Chauncey Manac EDGE, Rico Gafford CB, Unknown WR, Unknown DL, Unknown LS.

You have 4 ILBs, so one too many players. You have 9 at OL, but you correctly had 26 on offense. I don’t see any reason to keep Hanson around. Myers and Tom can play OC—as can Jenkins when he comes back, if need be.

This is what I would do:

QB - Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love (2)

RB - Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, Kylin  Hill (3)

WR - Sammy Watkins, Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, Christian Watson, Amari Rodgers, Romeo Doubs (6)

TE - Robert Tonyan, Josiah Deguara, Marcedes Lewis, Tyler Davis (4)

OL - David Bakhtiari, Josh Myers, Jon Runyan, Yosh Nijman, Royce Newman, Sean Rhyan, Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker, Cole Van Lanen (9)  Elgton Jenkins PUP

24 Offense

DL - Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry, Jarran Reed, TJ Slaton, Devonte Wyatt, Jonathan Ford (6)

LB - De'Vondre Campbell, Quay Walker, Krys Barnes, Ty Summers, Isaiah McDuffie (5)

EDGE - Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Justin Houston, Kingsley Enagbare, Jonathan Garvin (5)

CB - Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Eric Stokes, Shemar Jean-Charles, Keisean Nixon (5)

S - Adrian Amos, Darnell Savage, Jaquiski Tartt, Shawn Davis, Tariq Carpenter, (5)

26 Defense

STs - Mason Crosby, Pat O'Donnell, Steven Wirtel (3)

3 Special Teams

Bubble Guys/Last Out: Patrick Taylor (could be No. 3 if Hill isn't ready), Samori Toure (ST value but no room in the top 6), Dom Dafney (kind of redundant with Deguara healthy), Randy Ramsey (he's the Nixon of the EDGE group with good ST value but Houston signing forces him out), Vernon Scott (if we bring in Tartt, it's a two man race and Davis beats out Scott for the final spot).

PS:  Kurt Benkert QB, Tyler Goodson RB, Samori Toure WR, Juwann Winfree WR, Cole Schneider G, Caleb Jones T, Chauncey Manac EDGE, Ray Wilborn ILB, Kabion Ento CB, Raleigh Texada CB, Jack Heflin DL, Innis Gaines S, Dominic Eberle K, Alize Mack TE,

Good catch.  I actually had too few on the roster when I was done, then added Dafney, Hanson, Toure, and Wilborn.  I will edit it to remove Hanson, actually.  He was kept to offer an alternate C, simply because we have not seen Tom snap the ball, yet.  Perhaps Dafney wasn't truly my final roster spot.

[QB] Rodgers | Love [2]
[OL] Bakhtiari | Jenkins | Myers | Runyan | Rhyman | Nijman | R.Walker | Newman | Tom [9]
[TE] Tonyan | Lewis | Davis [3]
[WR] Lazard | Watson | Cobb | Doubs | Rodgers | Toure | M.Taylor [7]
[RB] Jones | Dillon | P.Taylor [3]
[FB] Deguara [1]

[DL] Clark | Wyatt | Lowry | Slaton | Ford [5]
[EDGE] P.Smith | Gary | Garvin | Enagbare | Ramsey [5]
[ILB] Campbell | Q.Walker | Summers | McDuffie | Carpenter [5]
[CB] Alexander | Stokes | Douglas | Nixon | Ento | Gafford [6]
[S] Amos | Savage | Scott | Gaines [4]

[ST] Crosby | O'Donnell | Coco [3]

TOTAL = 53

[PUP] Hill

[PS] Benkert | Winfree | Van Lanen | Goodson | Mack | Texada | Heflin | Manac | Brice | Eberle | Dafney | UNKNOWN | UNKNOWN

Notable cuts: Watkins, Reed, Barnes, Jean-Charles

Thoughts:
I've built this roster with ST in mind. This pushes Barnes off the roster. Summers is probably one of our best ST players and McDuffie is just 23 so they both survive.

Last year the Packers chose 6 WRs allowing them to keep 6 DL but this year I think they will choose 7 WRs. The DL picks itself but with 5 DL the last spot will come down between Reed and Ford and I've chosen Ford due to his size - He's going to be useful on the field goal units.

Selecting the WR group wasn't easy. I think it's safe to say there are four locks but after that anything could happen. If Watkins does not land a starting WR spot then if we keep him we will be stuck with a player who doesn't play ST. Unfortunately Cobb doesn't play ST either and I don't think we will keep both. Cobb would get the edge in this scenario. I really hope Rodgers comes out of his shell because he is capable of doing Deebo style routes and add an extra dimension to our offence. Toure has Will Fuller-like abilities as a WR and supposedly he can play gunner if needed so he should nab a roster spot. The last spot is for ST. That person has to be the starting gunner/jammer and Taylor is the favourite here but can't write off Winfree yet.

Dafney made the roster last year but with Davis now in the picture and the fact he played in multiple ST units pushes Dafney off the roster unless he outplays a LB on ST.

I tell you what...the cornerback depth is so-so. If Ento doesn't show much of anything in camp then we will probably need to bring someone else in who has the size to play jammer. Our other corners are looking either too small or too slow. Gafford is there purely just for his speed. He might be able to do some returns, some gunner work perhaps and add more speed in the slot if needed. He could be our own swiss knife.

I'm guessing Hill will start the season on PUP. I like the look of Goodson but the fact he only had 9 ST snaps in his college career suggests he won't make the roster. Taylor is bigger and more powerful so he would be far more useful for us on ST if needed.

The makeup of the roster is almost identical to last year's final 53. The only difference is an extra WR instead of a DL.

I'm scratching my head at the Barnes cut. I get special teams was in mind for this roster, but even then this seems like  a stretch. You're cutting a good depth piece at LB for McDuffie? Can Barnes not play STs? How much better can McDuffie be on special teams where you can cut Barnes for him?

Reed also seems like a weird cut, i get Ford has the length to block FGs, but man, I don't think that's worth keeping him over an experienced guy who can give you good things against the run and rush the passer on the cheap.
