Official 2023 QB Thread

Levis is so much worse than Stroud. The more I watch of Tanner Mckee the more I feel like he should replace Levis as QB4. I don’t hate Levis, but he is a major project. His tape made me feel like I was watching a HS kid at times, but you clearly see the fantastic tools too. He, like every QB, is a major guess. No college QB is ready-made for the NFL. Some are closer than others, but no other possible position in sports requires more of a leap than QB. Levis could easily take a leap and be a superstar. He could also take a minimal leap and be meh. He could stay the same and be awful. No1 really can say who will be amazing or who will suck at that position.

That said, I see more NFL refinement/polish from Young, Richardson, Stroud, and even Tanner Mckee right now. Not sure why anyone would bet on Levis over those dudes, but we’re also not in the interview rooms picking the psyche of these dudes, which is the most crucial part of the eval.

Your evaluations of Desmond Ridder, Jordan Love, Sam Howell, and Baker Mayfield must all be infinitely higher than mine.

I would for sure take atleast 2 of those guys over Levis to try out no doubt.  Ridder and Love i much prefer their gameplay coming out than what i have seen from Levis and it's not close.   Mayfield we have seen what he is and it's very high and very low so not sure what to think about him now over Levis.   Howell im not gonna lie i have never seen play that i can remember so i won't judge him.    But Ridder and Love im for sure taking and giving a chance over Levis. I don't think Levis should be a 1st rounder and i hate both Love and Ridder as late 1st guys coming out.

I liked Malik Willis as a prospect better than I like Levis as a prospect, and I wasn't that high on Willis.

Sameeeeeee   If i had to put last years, this years, and next years classes together.   My top 6 guys in order would be

1. Caleb
2. Mayes
3. Young
4. Stroud
5. Ridder
6. Willis

I could add more and im not sure Levis makes it in my top 10 to 12.

PS I like Levis. I would be okay if a team took him #1, defending on what they wanted and valued and had. Good size. Good eyes.

I was fine if (and took flak for) SF had taken Jones over Lance, and I liked Lance. Jones was ready and able to play in the league, but Lance could have used more seasoning.

I think I get what you are saying but completely disagree on the idea that Stroud has worse "eyes" than Levis. That's Levis's biggest flaw imo. Can't see pressure, don't think he makes many good reads. Stroud is definitely a 1 read guy for the most part and had an insane amount of talent surrounding him that made his life easier, but he flat out executed. Plus, he looks like the purest thrower of the football. To me, he's a pretty safe bet to be Kirk Cousins/Jared Goff and can be better than those guys. Levis just doesn't do anything for me. I don't really see a path to success for him unless he changes drastically as a player, which I'd rather not bet on. He's had several years to make those changes and honestly I think you barely even see flashes of the good. With Richardson the flashes are there with pocket avoidance, changing platform and moving to his next reads - he just doesn't do it consistently yet. I'm way more ok with that profile in a guy who hasn't played much than someone who has several years of starting experience. I do however agree that he should have stayed in school if he wanted to develop more, but he struck while the iron was hot and he's gonna be a 1st rounder so I don't blame him. I can see him succeeding if he goes to a place that lets him develop. I wouldn't draft Levis in the 1st 2 rounds

Levis isn't going Top 3. Vegas just juicing his odds to try to make people bet with the line movement and make money. However, I do believe the smoke the Colts love the guy. I think Levis is going #4 overall. Although if the Colts pass on Levis, I think he could fall to the 20's. I think it's like the Giants in 2019...if Giants don't select Daniel Jones at 6, there is zero doubt in my mind that guy makes it to the Giants at 20, and if Giants pass him again at 20, he falls to the early 2nd Round. Colts love Levis... and just the Colts imo. Maybe I'm wrong... we'll see.

Apparently somebody on Reddit claimed they knew Levis and Levis told him he was going to be the #1 pick--so a bunch of Reddit users started throwing money on Levis #1 and the sportsbooks adjusted.

Will Levis is essentially like Dogecoin and nobody is reporting on this. There are just 50 talking heads on TV now saying that Levis could go #1 because the line moved because a bunch of Reddit users made it move lol

I will sign up Reddit if it comes true.

2. What is a realistic place that MN would need to trade up to?

If I had to guess, to be safe and probably still have a shot you would need to trade ahead of Tennessee and Houston at #11 and #12.

Danielle Hunter

Justin Jefferson

1st rounder in 2023

2nd rounder in 2023

1st rounder 2024

3rd rounder in 2024

There is nothing more I want to see than Houston trying to get cute by taking a DL at #2 and then all the QBs being gone by their second selection and having Case Keenum win them 6 games--effectively taking them out of the top 2 picks next season.

Im being very cynical this draft cycle lol

Or a situation where they take Hendon Hooker No. 12 overall.

I do think it'd be incredibly ballsy (in a bad way) to not take a QB at 2.  If any QB other than Young succeeds, much less quickly, then that whole staff will have to defend their jobs.

If they don't walk away with one of the "Big 4" with either #2 or #12, yeah I'd fire the FO.

I'd say they get some time to prove everyone wrong.  I mean, if Young is the only one that looks good year 1, and assuming they hit on the player they take instead, it buys them some time.

But the second that any of the others break out, and unless they get someone who looks like a long term answer before that happens, then yeah, they all get fired.  It's a huge gamble.

I gotta say that one thing I find confusing is the theory that C.J. Stroud will fall. It's not that I doubt it, but I don't understand why that would happen. While I think Young is the best QB in the Draft, Stroud is the best thrower. I get that he didn't perform well on that test, but I really don't know how much stock to put into that because the film shows a guy who reads the field well.

The only thing I can think is that Stroud may fall victim to being seen as a safe, relatively low-ceiling QB. I kind of understand that. He's not going to be the next Mahomes or Rodgers. And the odds that any old-school pocket passer develops into the next Brady or Manning are always low. But I would feel confident that you'll likely get a QB on par with Jared Goff or Matt Ryan. And it's very possible you get a better QB because Stroud has more athleticism than those two guys.

But yeah, I understand the Goff comparisons. Stroud has many of the same strengths and weaknesses. He definitely has some of the same frustrations under pressure. But if you protect that guy, he's a phenomenal distributor of the football. (Same is true of Goff.) Take the Michigan game. Statistically, it was one of his worst. But outside of the shovel pass INT when he was being sacked, I thought he was quite impressive. Cade Stover deflected a beautiful pass for the second INT and dropped an absolute dime of a touchdown. Stroud made a lot of "wow" throws in that game.

Anyways, all this to say that I would draft him in the top 5 and put a good OL in front of him. I think he'll be a good QB. He may top out at above average or fringe top 10, but he'll give you stability at the position. And there's always the chance he develops into a Drew Brees or Philip Rivers.
