What retired player’s reputation(on the field) has gotten worse since they retired?

Again this is strictly about their ability on the field, so guys who did crazy stuff after playing not related to football don’t count.

I’m  gonna go with Shaun Alexander. He was the mvp of the league at his peak and when I ask people about him now they say he was an average to above average back who just ran behind Hutch and Jones.

Brett Favre? Especially since the player that replaced him in GB is an all time great at the thing that Favre is among the all time worst at, which is protecting the football.

I don't understand this response at all. I don't think I've ever heard it suggested that Favre is somehow a lesser QB due to what Rodgers has done.

For myself, the name that immediately came to mind was Lynn Swan.  Seems like modern era fans are endlessly saying he doesn't belong in the HOF.

In fairness, people only say that because he was an average to above average back who just ran behind Hutch and Jones.

Marvin Harrison

Edit - Thought this was about players going nuts and stuff after leaving the NFL. lol

Still, he went from constantly being a top WR to being someone you never hear brought up in conversations for the best WRs,. Top 5-10 in yards, rec TDs, and receptions and is somehow still completely overlooked.

Emmitt Smith. I'm not a huge Emmitt fan but it seems like nobody really talks about him in the upper echelon of great backs like Sanders, Brown, Payton, LT, etc. anymore.

It's the same old and tired offensive line argument that has been debunked numerous times. Emmitt wasn't flashy like Sanders, but he was vastly superior in short yardage situations and moving forward.

In a big moment situation, give me Emmitt over LT or Sanders.

I'm a lifelong Eagles fan and I can tell you that Emmitt was a great back. He ran over people and he outran people. He broke tackles and he was tough as nails. I think he was in the top 5 conversation at retirement and is still there. I'm not sure that lots of people thought the yardage record put him ahead of Sanders or Brown or Payton.

Jerrah tried to not pay him after he won a SB and the Cowboys went 0-2, apologized, paid him, and won 2 more SBs in the next 3 years. Emmitt had a 2/3rds 1/3rd split with other Cowboys RBs that season and he was a 5.3 ypc guy and the rest were about 3.6 behind that elite offensive line.

Edit: I misunderstood the assignment.

Edit 2: I do think it still stands though. OJ was an outstanding player and went for 2k in 14 games. It seems like he is never mentioned as one of the top backs in history, quite possibly because of the other thing, be he was outstanding.

I think we know why Marvin Harrison's reputation has gotten worse lol.

He's a Cowboy, but Troy Aikman. Still one of the finest passers that's ever played IMO, but I think the zoomer nation has just taken a look at the stats from his era, compared them to some other guys putting up bigger numbers at the time, and decided he was more of a bus-driver type QB that had Emmitt Smith in his pocket. Which is crazy to me.

That 1994 championship game especially, Aikman was dropping dimes undaunted against one of the best defenses of it's era after the Cowboys were down 21-0.
