Mcgrone is getting a lot of hate, but he has had some moments.

Zappe is never going to be an NFL QB. Hope he had a good degree, because he’ll be using it in 2 or 3 years.

As poorly as he threw the ball yesterday, I'm not sure he makes the 53-man roster. His arm strength was awful.

I thought he was fine enough for a rookie but I only really saw the second and third quarters.

I don’t really like Uche’s development but he will be making the roster anyways probably.

My problem with Zappe was arm strength, he reminded me of Cam trying to throw down field.

QB

Zappe was all over the place, but he's a 4th round pick rookie.. we can't expect a lot from him at this point. I would give him some time and see how it goes, he seems like a smart kid. Given how much the Giants were blitzing he could have done a lot worse. My problem with Zappe is I think he's trying to overcompensate right now. He knows he doesn't have high end arm strength so some of these short passes are bullets and longer ones are floaters.. he needs a lot more touch to his game.

WR's:

  • Thornton: I want to see how he does in the joint practices... but if he continues to improve it's going to make things VERY interesting. Was also fun to see him in the slot.
  • Humphrey: He's done better than I would have expected. He's another guy who they should be trying to trade to a WR needy team before cut down day.. or I like the idea of trying to keep him as that 3rd TE because Asiasi/Keene should be relegated to the PS at best
  • Wilkerson: He performed better than expected.. great special teams guy.. the best quote I heard on him is he is the perfect AAAA player.. just not quite good enough for me to want him playing WR. He's shown improvement though, he should make a 53 somewhere. I'd also have him on the trade market.
  • Nixon: If he catches that darn 3rd down pass his narrative would be totally different. He can't drop that ball. He is very athletic, seems to have greatly improved his route running and can make some contested catches. I want him to make the team, I think you give him this year to continue developing and next year he could take over for Meyers in the slot ( Mixing in with Bourne/Thornton there). If he doesn't work out then you can always go after another WR in the draft.

They need to be on the phone with teams about their WR depth over the next two weeks. Grab some day 3 picks for these guys you're going to cut anyway

OL:

  • Herron has been a good backup last couple years.. really wonder what has happened to him
  • Murray: he has transitioned to OG and tbo he wasn't that bad. He seems like a great guy to have on the PS for a year then he could compete for a backup spot next year. His energy is great, seems like a good teammate .. they may even like him enough to put him on the 53 if he continues to show progress
  • Cajuste was a guy I loved in the draft and he seems to have taken a jump this year.. if Wynn is traded Cajuste is the guy. I think his injury was just cramps which happens all the time in preseason.. especially because the Pats have taken a lighter approach to camp so people don't get injured. Don't give up on Cajuste!

RB:

  • Harris: Foxboro Flu IR guy .. he was never going to play this season
  • Strong: The fact that they put him out there after just starting to practice this week shows they want him to be a factor this year. He's another incredible speed guy so we could see him bust off some huge runs if the OL can ever get back to form. With his speed it would be fun to see them split him out wide too in the hurry up offense but i'm sure they don't want to put too much on his plate year 1.
  • Taylor: He's fine.. but I doubt they keep him.. he would be another guy that could be traded for a late day 3 pick if they know he's going to get cut. Good enough for a 53 but he's never going to be Rex Burkhead / Dion Lewis like many hoped

DL:

  • Roberts: I think y'all are being a bit hard on the guy, for a 7th round pick who was in D2 I was very impressed. He was putting pressure on the Giants STARTING OL .. that's a really good sign. If he does this well in the next two games I doubt they are able to sneak him onto the practice squad
  • Ray: He seemed to be used all over the DL.. that alone screams to me like they have him in their plans for the future. Going to turn into another great UDFA pickup.

LB:

  • Wilson: Super fun to watch, I'm excited to see his speed make plays during the season
  • McGrone: Another guy I think y'all are being hard on .. he missed an entire season of football and he JUST turned 22. He's got a lot of learning to do .. but his athleticism is leaps and bounds better than anyone they have had for years. Guy just being out there makes any tipped ball a potential INT. I think their plan all along was to bring in Wilson, have him run the show for a year then push McGrone into his role next year. If Wilson ends up being amazing and they resign him then that only helps even more having extra fast LB's. At the end of the day I treat McGrone like he was a 4th round rookie this year.. can't expect too much right now.
  • Perkins: Meh.. if they have room to develop him sure.. if he gets cut i'm ok with that too
  • Uche: They need his speed as a pass rushing specialist.. you need to give him playing time to push this defense to the next level
  • Jennings: Pretty good .. if you pair him with Uche you could have a really good tandem as long as you rotate them well

DB:

  • Williams should have been cut mid game
  • Wade is being used all over the field in camp.. i think he's still got a lot of potential, i want to see more of him
  • Jones is a fun ball hawk, I just worry that his going to give up just as many big plays as INT's with that style.. lucky for him he should have some elite safeties behind him to cover up his gambling ways
  • Butler is either going to be cut or relegated to a redzone specialist to cover up his lack of speed
  • Mitchell's fumble felt good but if that didn't work he didn't even try to make a tackle.. another big gamble which will either feel great or screw them over. He was meh and just the fact that he was playing makes me feel like they could be trying to push Jon Jones outside with Marcus Jones starting inside which would be interesting
  • Bryant: Another guy who I really like but I just don't see how he makes the team. Good job on punt returns but they don't really need him for that.. Jones/Jones/Wade will be ahead of him in the slot and they have a million safeties. He's another guy you should either trade or hope you can get him on the PS as a break glass in case of emergency call up guy.

Overall I liked more guys than I expected, this team doesn't have super stars.. but they've got way more depth than I would have thought going in. If they could trade off a few guys to get some more picks for next year that would be nice. I'm really loving all the draft picks of the last two years too, that's a good sign for the future.

I missed the game, but I saw the highlights on the NFL's Youtube page. I didn't see much of strong in the highlights but I did see a lot of Zappe. He seemed to throw behind receivers a lot or they had to back pedal on their route to fit where he threw it. Several under throws. Nixon looked pretty good from what I saw. Humphrey's TD showed a good adjustment to where Zappe placed the ball.

I want to see what the new wide receivers do over the next couple of weeks I would like to know what the Myers Camp is looking for dollar wise because if it's out of the Patriots range I would trade him I don't see him as a future wide receiver on this team especially a critical one going forward If I,m the GM I'm trying to replace him he's one of my favorites but I have to be realistic speed is the game.

That's a really though one tbo. Trading Meyers is incredibly risky given how reliable he is. I would consider it but don't know if the return you'll get will be worth it.. if it's a 5th/6th round pick I'd rather have him, if you're talking a 3rd then I'd be all for it.. but dont think teams are going to give up much for him. With how much WR salaries have been going up the past couple of years I would expect him to be looking for something in that 8-12 range. I think he is 100% gone after this season. Matt Groh has made a point that his philosophy is to get speed because you can't teach speed .. either Thornton dominates in the slot and becomes the new slot, Nixon takes that spot or we can fully expect a speed slot out of next years draft.

I believe that a good amount of the reason that they are simplifying the offense is because of the WR position. They've seen how much it costs to sign WR's in free agency and how long it takes for young guys to acclimate to their system. If Thornton can contribute year 1 with this new system.. they could save tens of millions of dollars on that position moving forward. I would fully expect them to start drafting a WR in that round 2-4 range every year to keep youth in the system and not ever pay WR's big money again. I believe their goal on offense is to turn the WR position into the RB position.

Great point. Touch them all!

IMO We  all over value Meyers because we have been so needy for just a guy that can play. I still  look at this year as a building year. They have to jump in now with the young WRs. Play them and see if they have a future. Firm believer  " All in the pool" with the young guys . That goes especially on defense as well.

I overvalue him until I see someone like Tre Nixon drop a 3rd down need to have it type ball.

Agreed, I think that the WR position should be ok though. Thornton / Parker / Bourne will all be here at least one more year which is a solid foundation. Then either Nixon / a rookie can get added to that next year.

The big area I think is going to have a rebuild next year is going to be the OL.. if they want to continue this transition we will probably see at least one more high draft pick on OL to add more athleticism.

I agree with that for the most part. I would feel better about getting rid of Meyers if Nixon / Bourne were playing better. I still believe Bourne is going to have a big year but I think the team would feel much better about him taking over if he hasn't been so quiet in camp.
