Better 3rd Down Back: Kevin Faulk or James White

Faulk had the longer career, but White had more moments.

James White. Scoring 20 of the 31 points needed for the greatest comeback in sports history is one of the greatest achievements that we don't talk about enough.

As a Bills fan…Faulk.

As an NFL fan White.

 

Faulk would obliterate the Bills on every crucial down it felt like. He was one of the most annoying players to play because it felt like every time the Pats needed to make a big play Faulk came through. Now the Bills’ ineptitude during that time frame definitely played into that, so I’m going to say White, but damn Faulk was good.

I find it a little difficult to compare.  Back then, Faulk was *the* guy you pointed to when talking about a 3rd down back (Sproles followed shortly after).  But RBs are even more involved in the passing game now than they were back then (not counting guys who were All-Pros like LDT).  White has 3 seasons with more targets than Faulk's career high.

I'd say based on what we know, White was better, but I wonder what Faulk's numbers would have looked like if he played today.

Faulk was more unique to his era. Third and short, you had a good idea where dump off pass was going. I think on paper, White was the better receiver and definitely the better route runner. Vote goes to James here.
