Deliberately leaving a hole in your roster before week 1 and saying if our starting QB gets hurt, then we'll just pull the ripcord on the whole season, is such a totally different thing. It would be total incompetence and negligence to do that. Edit: But in both scenarios, you'd probably blow your coaching staff out after the season, especially if they're in year 2 or beyond. You're leaving thejm out to dry in the first place, so you obviously have no respect for them anyway. Before we go down that road: are there situations where accumulating as much draft capital as possible is the best thing for the franchise long term? Superduperman
If you're trying to work me into agreeing with something, just go ahead and say it. i've been pretty clear on my opinions in this thread. if you want to know what i think, i've explained it pretty well, i believe

diehardlionfan
Cut both back ups. If they can’t locate a better option they might as well let the Jack of all trades Cabinda be back up. The biggest thing with the Lions is the changing culture. Tanking totally undermines everything.
MortexLion
If anyone watched him speak to the media this morning he made it clear that if they can Bring someone in to help win games they will and will look at whos available in the waver wire/trade to upgrade any positions...hit QB...I wouldn't put it past the lions to cut both boyle and blough to find someone better in the waver wire..we got two spots so i can't see them not trying this. Lions017
Pretty much any team that loses their QB for the season is ****ed. However, plenty of teams lose their QB for just a game or a handful of games. If that's the case, you at least want someone that gives you a chance. You want someone that can maybe go .500 or even pick up 1 of 3 for you. That could be the difference between a playoff spot and not. We don't have anyone like that right now. I don't see Boyle or Blough beating anyone without a herculean effort from the defense and/or running game.

Is not trading picks for a backup the same thing as tanking? They can still search the waiver wire and look into any FAs for improvements at backup QB without giving up assets.

I'd send that 5th rounder for him, easy.
Superduperman
And for those who think that's too much, just answer this: if the Lions had had their 5th rounder this year and had been able to draft a QB equivalent to Ehlinger or Rudolph, would you have done it? I absolutely would have.

Im not against using a late round pick to improve the back up QB.

Sllim Pickens
The thing that makes me the most annoyed with this situation is that they had all of last year with these two. They weren't rookies last year, they were both vets that knew how this worked and we still chose to give them contracts and let them battle for backup QB. Everyone of us said that re-signing them was stupid back when it happened, but somehow this staff/GM couldn't see it? This should have been handled in the draft or free agency in the spring. Now if we bring in a new backup, he has to learn the playbook and playing catch up and getting no reps with the starters. I am glad if they dump both (Boyle already gone) but still annoyed that they waited. Side note, being mad about the backup QB is a better complaint than being mad about them running our best players off the team because of their egos.
