GDT: PS Week 3 @ Browns (Who the hell takes a 3rd game of preseason like it's....)

Apparently Fields will play the entire first half and there's been a lot of mixed feelings among fans. Some are worried about risk of injury while others feel it's necessary.

Personally I'm with the latter. Two weeks away from game 1 and he's only had about 10 reps in 2 games. And if he can't survive one half of preseason then he wasn't ever going to make it thru reg season anyhow. May as well use this opportunity to get a better idea of where he's at.

I see that you agree here, but this question here seems debated way more than it needs to be.
When you’re an established team (or even just side of the ball) and a certified contender, then of course you don’t risk your guys to injury in a preseason game.

But when you are building, and installing everything brand new, even with what could be a franchise cornerstone, reps as close to the real thing are needed. As many as are reasonably possible.

Now don’t call any naked boot runs, caution on the side of max protects. Don’t let anyone go out there already dinged up. All that jazz. But as long as they are smart, it’s fine to give them a few drives. Heck, didn’t the starters used to play atleast a half in the 3rd preseason game when we had 4 of them

He needs the game reps. People freak out every time he takes contact but even if the OL were elite the style of QB he plays will have him taking contact on the regular.

The biggest problem I have is that he’s going to be getting those reps without a good chunk of the guys with whom he needs those reps. I’d be surprised if Mooney or Kmet don’t exit early, Monty may not play at all and if so probably not much, Velus hasn’t practiced this week so won’t (or at least shouldn’t) play, Sharpe is out and Pringle is still out. So no WR2, WR3 and WR4/5, probably a brief showing for WR1 and TE1, and maybe no RB1.

I’m not sure that him throwing to guys who are barely good enough to make this roster is going to do as much good as it may serve to reinforce his feeling like he needs to tuck and run earlier.

If those guys dress, I have to believe they are playing as long as Fields is.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing though.

Even if those practice guys are not getting open, or dropping passes, running the wrong routes, or whatever....there are still some things Fields and staff can take away from it later on in film room. Especially with timing routes and such. They can look at those plays as say for example "okay, WR #7 drops this pass but Fields still made the right read and had good ball placement". Or "Fields throws an INT here on a cut route but the WR is in the wrong spot and is late to get there". If this was Mooney then more than likely those two plays work as designed. Like Fields said last year, sometimes you can learn more from plays that don't work than those that do (paraphrase).

Besides, Fields is going to be expected to elevate the WR/TE group this year anyhow and what better way to get him used to doing this than to throw him out there with some practice squad guys and see what he can do them in a real game with no meaningful risks at stake.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly that there are gains to be had by him playing today with whatever is available. 100%. Be nice if he was also able to build a little chemistry with the guys he’ll be playing with when the games matter.
