Anyone have a take on Lukas Van Ness? I haven’t watched much of him — EDGE player who will likely go ahead of us, so it seemed a bit far-fetched he’d be a top option.

Seems very powerful. Think he’s the type of DE who plays the run very well. Looks like he tries to bull his way to the QB and not with technique. Has a good motor.

I read,, should be Day 2 but might be 1  based on sheer Power !

Seems like a tweener, DE/DT type.  Bigger than you think.  Remind me a little of Kerrigan.

He and Murphy both have that sort of feel for me. I’ve watched more Murphy, in part because he’s played against a number of the OTs we’d be considering.

Power ends, the type who would classically be LEs, strong against the run, a lot of initial burst converted into power rushing, not a ton of bend, good motors. Murphy brings a lot of thunder right off the LOS, that’s where he got Bergeron a couple times in the run game — just blasted him and blew up the play in the process. Not a real refined player, in terms of pass-rush arsenal.

This is definitely the kind of DE this group has seemed to prefer over the years. I always think of Charles Johnson, who played for them forever. He was that type of player, much more similar to these guys than the Nolan Smith or Will McDonald types. Even Brian Burns, who is bendy as all hell, he’s also very long and rangy. Not one of these more compact 3-4 OLB types.

For whatever it’s worth, it sounds like Keim has dropped Murphy’s name several times. Interesting because he seems to be sliding a bit, maybe even into the 20s.

He has a lot of upside.  But he's too young for this regime.

I think that’s true. I read an article a while ago about the number of college snaps their draft picks have had, it was comparatively very high.

They want experience. Which is no surprise — it makes a pick safer when you’ve seen a guy do it for a long time. You probably get less upside/value, but more certainty.

Meh. I think its more Rivera trusting his coaches at the Senior Bowl's opinions over his scouts. Which kind of sucks.

I get that both sweat and young contracts expire at end of season now. But, we should not be looking DE in round 1. We need someone who will make a difference this season.

Its not just Sweat and Young. Its every single defensive end on the roster.

To be fair there are only 18 players under contract for 2025 right now.  So you could say that about most positions.

So you would think picking up one of your more important players 5th year option might be a good idea…

But look over the last decade there’s a ton of the biggest and brightest players in the league have played in the senior bowl. Our best player is a senior bowl standout. Plus the scouts for the senior bowl do a great job getting talent there that is on different levels and there’s been a really good turnout of players from these rosters. I mean year after year guys like Terry, Deebo, Herbert, and just a ton of names keep coming out of these games and it’s literally the closest measure to a NFL setting your getting before drafting a player. I think there should be more settings like this even for the juniors and lower class of declared players because it’s just a great level playing field tool where the players aren’t just responding in a practice but a game and a hotel setting as their season’s life will go so it’s a huge benefit for teams.

Believe what you want. The dude is 23-years old and not nearly close to his physical prime and we’re allowing a coach who won’t be here next year to make this decision. If he and Sweat have great years we’re all but screwed now.

The 5th year option paid in the 17 mill range and is fully guarenteed

the franchise tag is in the 19 mill range fully guarenteed.

we all know only one of sweat and young would be signed. A lot of money in that front four. Can’t pay them all

seeing what young can do this year allows us to not be on the hook for 17 mill in 24 if he sucks. It’ll cost roughly 2 mill more if we decide to franchise tag him if he balls out.

im good with the decision. If they both ball out we can sign one long term and slap the transition tag on another and hopefully nab two first from a team needing a star Edge player

I don't think that $19M number is correct. Reporters on twitter were saying its closer to $24M for the franchise tag. Obviously that could be wrong but that's what I saw.
