Giants release LB Blake Martinez

Despite working out a contract restructure of the big deal that brought him to New York, the Giants ended up moving on anyway. Considered one of the better Linebackers in the NFL while in Green Bay, Martinez had at least 144 tackles in each season from 2017 through 2020 before his 2021 season was cut short due to injury. He's still just 28.

Unfortunately for GB, all those 144 tackles per year were 5-10 yards downfield.

Doesn't that say more about your D-line ?

it says something about both.  DL wasn't great, but the ILB was not doing anything to be a difference maker.  made a lot of tackles, but so very impact players

3490 snaps with GB
3 INT, 2 forced fumbles

6 of one, half a dozen of the other.  Blake is not very good in coverage.  He is a tackling machine.  He is a little slow but has pretty good instincts and play recognition.  I think he is a player you can easily win with, but not one that you win because of.  The Giants paid him $10 million per year.  I think it is a strong bias to say he stinks, but not at all to say that they overpaid for what is probably a slightly above average player.

ILB room has really changed in GB lately. Blake would probably be ILB #4 or 5, even in his prime, on this roster.

Below McDuffie and Barnes?

Depending on Quays progression he'd still start there. I think Quay has good potential but let's see and Campbell has had one really good season and otherwise has had a lesser career. You'd probably avg him out to LB2 or Lb3 there.

If Campbell regresses and Quay doesn't pan out GB could be in for a very long season

Martinez was doing pretty well here until the injury. It was all downhill from there, to the point that both he and the Giants were ready to move on. Hope he gets back to his old form somewhere.

Wouldn't mind him for the Raiders since we nabbed the DC from NY.

We've been used to some really bad LB play in the past so it's hard not to upgrade. Idk how much I trust Perryman to stay healthy, and definitely don't know how much I trust our depth.

A bit of both. I always liked martinez but he had his limitations, especially in coverage. With a good line ahead of him and a coverage lb to his side though he can be very useful, he's good between the tsckels and gets out for screens etc very fast, had a high energy that can be good to have from a few guys on defense, and did have a knack of getting a sack/pressure/tfl/stuff/etc at important times like 3rd down etc.

He's not worth big mieny like NY gave him but in the right set up can be definitely be a benefit.

In our current setup I would say Barnes woukd be ahead of him, but if you asked me who would be a better fit across all 32 trams Martinez would likely come up ahead more often than him. Barnes is the definition of nothing special and you don't want him as your noo. 1 but he's quite OK at most things.
