Playoff Predictions

Saquon Barkley noted that the missed opportunity on Christmas Eve created another one for next Sunday. The Giants will be in the playoffs with a win over the 4-9-1 Colts.

Barkley:  “We control our own destiny. Win and you’re in. At home. That’s beautiful.”

Depending on how things play out over the final two weeks, the Giants could find themselves back in Minnesota for a chance at a better result against the Vikings in the Wild Card round.

Week 16 Winners:

  • Minnesota Vikings 12-3

Now 11-0 in one-score games after beating the Giants 27-24 on Saturday says the Vikings are battle-tested. It also says they don't dominate opponents. So, nothing new to see here. The Vikings are still alive for the NFC's top seed.

  • Brock Purdy San Francisco 49ers · QB

The 49ers won their eighth game in a row, 37-20 over the Washington Commanders, and yes, of course we know they are powered by their defense. But the rookie quarterback is now 3-0 as a starter and while San Francisco was 1-of-5 in the red zone, Purdy connected twice with George Kittle for touchdowns. The 37 points was the most the offense has scored with Purdy as a starter.

  • Dallas Cowboys 11-4

The defense gave up a lot of yards and a lot of points to a backup quarterback in a 40-34 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, but it also had four takeaways, which keyed the victory. That kept the Cowboys alive to win the NFC East, and they are guaranteed to be no worse than the top NFC wild-card team.

  • Steve Wilks, Panthers interim HC

Without Christian McCaffrey and Robbie Anderson, and with a reinvigorated Sam Darnold, the Panthers' interim head coach has his team in control of its future after a 37-23 thrashing of the Lions. If the Panthers win out, including beating the Bucs on New Year's Day, they win the NFC South.

  • New Orleans Saints 6-9

Their 17-10 victory over the Browns means the Saints are just a half-game behind the Bucs in the NFC South entering Sunday night's Bucs-Cardinals game.

  • Green Bay Packers 6-8

They didn't even play Saturday, but they won over and over. The four teams ahead of them in the NFC standings -- the Giants, Commanders, Seahawks and Lions -- all lost, keeping the door open for the Packers to make a run at the postseason.

Week 16 Losers:

  • Detroit Lions 7-8

The defense, the Lions' Achilles' heel all season, gave up a stunning 320 yards rushing to the Panthers on Saturday, stalling the playoff push of one of the league's hottest teams. The Lions tumbled to 7-8 and the NFC's ninth seed. They've still won six of their last eight games, but they now need help to get into the playoffs.

  • Atlanta Falcons 5-10

Despite Falcons rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder improving in his second career start, the 17-9 loss to Baltimore officially eliminated Atlanta from the playoff race.

Remember back in week #1 when Christian Watson dropped Aaron Rodgers' 1st pass of the season?

Wow, my blood pressures been elevated for a RealPlayer long time now🤣

If the Pack wins today, next week's going to be a slugfest.

The Packers won, and looked tough, and on their game in beating Miami handily.  The Vikings are in for a tough battle next Sunday.  They're going to need their "A" game to win it.  I hope Darrisaw will be 100% back, and Bradbury returns, too, and also that Dantzler returns.  I hope the upfront blocking will be a lot better, and Kirk will be more pocket aware, and not get stuck holding the ball, but will be able to throw it to a safe spot when no one is open.  And, I hope that  defensive calls will be more aggressive, like they were in the first half of the Giants game, rather than back to a completely predictable shell, like they returned to in the 2nd half.  The Vikings NEED to knock The Packers out of the playoff picture, or they might end up playing them in The wildcard Round.

Following a Saturday slate where losses for the Giants, Commanders, Lions and Seahawks aided Green Bay's playoff aspirations, the Packers improved those hopes on Sunday with a nail-biting win that looked unattainable as the Dolphins offense had its way in the first half. Green Bay rides a three-game win streak going into the final two-game stretch with home games against the Vikings and Lions.

Four teams have clinched playoff berths in the NFC, and two more can clinch with wins on Sunday.

The Buccaneers will clinch the NFC South if they beat the Panthers, and the Giants will clinch an NFC wild card if they beat the Colts.

A win over the Panthers is all the Bucs need to secure their second straight division title and third straight playoff berth.

If they don’t beat the Panthers, however, they will no longer control their playoff fate because a Panthers win in Week 18 would make them the division champs.

The Eagles kick off their practice week on Wednesday without a clear view of quarterback Jalen Hurts‘ chances of playing against the Saints.

Sirianni: “We’ll see. We’ll continue to see how he progresses throughout the week. Does he have chance? Of course he does because his body just knows how to heal. He’s a freak. We’ll just see what happens as the week progresses.”

Believe it or not, the (12-3) Minnesota Vikings are +3.5 point underdogs vs the (7-8) Green Bay Packers this weekend. Call it the Aaron Rodgers effect or late season Lambeau Field advantage if you want but if I’m Kevin O’Connell, I call it disrespect.

Still, as Minnesota sports fans we know better than to think the Vikings are going to walk into Green Bay and hang an easy W on a Packers team that must win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

We should know if the NFC’s #1 seed is still in play by the time this game starts but the San Francisco 49ers are biting at the Vikings’ heels for the #2 seed. That makes Eagles vs Saints irrelevant as to who takes the field for the purple and gold.
